I walked the whole trail (Bowness on Solway to Wallsend) about the same time as you (early Aug 21) - as you say, not much to see of the wall for the best part of 30 miles but you had missed a short section that forms the first, and highest, part of the wall on your route and the famous phallus in the wall just past Birdoswald which is not easy to spot. I went with a company (HF Holidays) that arrange all hotels, luggage transfer and provide a guide - 15 miles a day roughly. BTW if you get chance, Tullie House is worth seeing in Carlisle - it is Carlisle's museum and has great sections on life as a Roman.
