Bit over AUD$3K for 2 to get from London to Narvic on sleepers and some First Class. Sounds expensive at first but not so bad when you think about it. Think I would get a flight from London to Stockholm and then the trains around many parts of Sweden and Norway. It really is beautiful up in the Arctic Circle. Long time before drinks and I definitely want to revisit. Thanks for the journey - I like trains. Great adventure for you and your Dad to share quality, good fun times.

I am 73. My Dad passed away on to new adventures in 1986. There are very few days when I do not think of him at some point through the day. Three years ago my ol' Mom went off to find my Dad when she had reached almost 97. Both my parents travelled a lot together and have likely seen more places than I have. Thanks for making this video for me to enjoy and be inspired. My son and I are talking about doing some travelling together. Likely it will be on our motorcycles this summer.

Visiting the Arctic circle is very special. I took a motorcycle trip IN SUMMER to the Arctic circle from Denver Colorado to Northern Alaska, just shy of 7000 miles (11,200km) on the return trip. Is was very special and I will never forget it! :-)

Remember the train rides up north as a kid probably around 1988. We were a family of six so I'm pretty sure it was a sleeper cabin with 4 beds, since we couldn't fit all six in one cabin. I was in one with my 3 year older sister and my mom and a random dude. My dad my older brother and older sister were in a different cabin. I loved that trip, besides the random dude being in our cabin, wished it was only us, and my mom didn't enjoy it as she got car sick (train sick?). The cabin we had looked like the other cabin you showed but probably only four beds instead of 6. We traveled to Boden I think and traveled by car or bus (can't remember) to the final destination Korpilombolo, my mom's birth place to visit my grandparents and some aunts and my uncle, as well as cousins. Thank you for making this video so I could go down memory lane!

as a local to kiruna, if you are going to norway the train between kiruna and narvik IS the most beautiful ride ever. Doesn't matter if it is during winter or summer. Happy to hear the icehotel is on your bucketlist as well! would also recommend to visit the mine, it is the worlds largest underground mine. with a main mining level at 1365 meters underground!

Indeed. I go there every summer (to walk in the mountains) and get off at one of the various small stations dotted along the line (mostly Abisko, of course, and always with my dad while he was still alive). Sitting on the side of a mountain and watching the trains far, far below is wonderful.

The night train Stockholm-Narvik is split roughly in half early in the morning (at around 6 AM) at Boden C. Some of the cars head down the short trip to the Baltic coast to Luleå, while the rest go on towards Kiruna and Narvik. That's where you got the dining car swapped out. :)

yes I did this trip many times but once a few years ago an avalanche come down from the mountains on the track and we had to wait many hours for help in the train .. but it was warm and okay in the carriage :)

i did this journey back in the 1990's, but in a MUCH cheaper fashion. started out at LIverpool St. station took the train to Harwich and then a ferry to Denmark (80quid at the time), then on to sweeden, mostly on local trains (less than 50quid, as i remember), and then up to Kiruna on a 2 day sleeper. it was one of the most fantastic trips i've ever taken, and i've been traveling most of my life, i'm 70years of age.

frustratingly, there are no remaining ferries from the UK to Scandinavia, so a detour is always required now (unless you go by plane, which I suppose most people do). The boat from northern Denmark to Faroe goes right past Shetland, but doesn't stop there. I know, that would be a pretty pointless route from the UK's mainland to Sweden or Norway, but at least you could easily go to Faroe that way, but you can't because the ferry doesn't stop. There used to be a ferry from Shetland (Lerwick) to Bergen in Norway, but that was cancelled more than a decade ago. Now you probably have to fly from Aberdeen or something, I don't know.

I've done that trip to Absiko a few times (and from Narvik with a few nights' stop in Abisko too before heading back to London). There is a first class section on one of other night trains to/from Stockholm but you do need to change trains in Boden to go further north (changes are at civilised hours and with only a short wait between them). I had a First Class Interrail ticket and just paid supplements to travel in First Class or Standard Premier on the Eurostar. That worked out cheaper for sure. I haven't seen the new Hamburg to Stockholm sleepers so it was very nice to see those, thank you. When I travelled in February this year, they were still using old/interim stock.

I took those first three trains when I went to Europe a couple years ago! (From the US) Sat on that same bench that y’all had the waffles on while I waited for my transfer. Köln was hands down my favorite city I’ve been to in Europe. The people there are incredible.

I'm looking longingly at all that snow whilst sweltering in a hot Australian heatwave! I thought I noticed the back of your Dad's head during the early part of the video, and I am happy that he was along for the journey! I never realised that Lapland was part of Sweden nor just how close to the Arctic Circle Norway was, so this was educational for me. Well Lapland stretches through two countries really, Sweden and Finland. One doesn`t realize how North Norway really is as it is still civilised and fairly close to parts of Europe which we don`t associate with snow and the arctics. Narvik is though the northenmost train station is still about 250 miles shy from the Nordkapp which is the northernmost point of the continental Europe at a latitude of 71 North. To give you an idea, if as an Aussie you wanted to go to the same latitude South you would sail to the Antarctic coast. The northernmost settlemnt in Norway which is inhabbited all year around (although winter population drops to around 30) is Ny - Alesund on the Spitsbergen island at a latitude of 78 North (that`s about the latitude of the McMurdo research station on Antarctica on the Southern hemisphere).

@@FrankyLon Northern Norway also counts as a part of Lapland, and so do indeed bits of Russia. It's a term for the region traditionally associated with the Sámi people by the southerners.
