the problem I have with the tug class is that the cargo pods should not be mounted between the nacelles... whether is because you are faithful to Big Bird's Four Rules (line of sight requirement) which I am not, OR if you just think it is a very dangerous designed to have such a large and long detachable pod mounted between the pods. IF I were to design the tugs I would mount the nacelles on TOP of the vessel with a deflector package on the front edge of the saucer (ten forward) with a enlarged shuttle bay at the rear (extra work bees and heavy tractor equipped shuttles) with two impulse engines on either side of the bay. I would have weapons systems be external attachments. pods would be smaller in diameter and mounted in side by side for 2,V for three, and X for 4 or 5 . for longer chains extra saucers can be mounted in line with the main Tug or inverted design tugs underneath... spare saucers then can act as escorts vessels in hostile regions...

That rule (or at least the rule of "two warp engines") would never have been made if Franz Joseph hadn't had that falling out with the Big Bird...

I just wanna say about the bit where you argued that this type of ship should be more heavily armed, let me give you a quick reason why: Its a transport ship. Having these is VITAL for logistics. All those fancy connies cant do shit if they run out of gas, or torpedoes, or food. (I know, replicators, but even on VOY they seem to be rationed). So, in order to supply all your ships and stations, you need the maximum number of these ships possible. To achieve that they used parts that were already in production (saucer sections, warp engines) and thus easily available in large numbers, instead of designing new parts altogether, which would require not only extra time, but also separate production lines, which would make production more difficult in total, so relying on existing parts is a good choice. Just look at the Sherman tank. At the same time they simplified the design by deleting unneeded equipment. Firepower first and foremost is not part of the mission profile of a transport, so firepower was reduced to the absolute minimum. 90% of these would run around deep within federation space anyway where danger from hostile ships is minimal, and for those 10% that operate close to borders, they will be under escort if needed. And cargo with a significant risk of being stolen can be carried around by heavier and better defended ships, like a constitution class. If they had done that any differently, e.g. adding more guns, they would either have less transport ships being produced, or had to divert resources from the production of other ships to get the same numbers. Money may not be a concern in the 24th century, but resources are still finite, especially time, but I guess raw materials arent infinitely available either, and even if, need to be transported first.

I would imagine that the more tugged "modules" you had the slower the warp speed. Yes, you would extend the field around the cargo but as you added more it would be harder and harder to do. So...super long bunch of modules? Sure...if you liked traveling at sublight speeds... ;) Also, I imagine that the field helped stabilize the modules so that they wouldn't be flopping all over the place hence there would actually be a limit to the number you could plug together. Anyway, there would be a tradeoff between how much cargo you wanted to carry and how fast you needed to get it to where it was going. I'm sure the bean counters back at cargo HQ had that all figured out for each run in order to maximize profits. :) Great shows, guys. Just discovered you and am trolling through your past episodes at my leisure. It's an awesome idea to do something like this and there is most DEFINITELY a healthy niche market for this kind of production. It's amazing that your hard work has paid off with the inclusion of the actual designers of some of these ships. Dexler is an especially great guest. It's wonderful to get to "meet" the people behind something that we love so much. :)

When I was young, I liked this design too. As colonies are a huge part of Trek, the need for these container ships becomes more obvious. However, the longer one ponders their functionality, the more a basic design flaw becomes just as obvious. I feel these containers should be equipped with landing gear and the ability to land on various surfaces.

@franksmedley86197 жыл бұрын
hello gentlemen. you mentioned that the design specs for the tugs was 40 years. Given that most of them would never see combat, and usually would be plodding along with their cargoes at low warp speeds, I feel that 40 years is a bit short. I would not be surprised to find out that such ships were used far longer, but not by Fleet. After 40 years, they would probably be sold to lesser races for inter-system trade to build the economies of those races faster to Federation standards. So, such ships could and more likely, would be used a century or more after their commission dates. For an example in real life, just look to some of the old twin engine transports, some of which were flying as much as 50 years after being retired from service ( the iconic personnel and cargo transport aircraft of WWII... specifically the DC and Junkers types). Even in an age where higher warp speeds were common, low speed cargo would have it's place. sometimes, speed is not an issue, and a slow transport is economical when it can carry such large masses of cargo. One never wonders at HOW the shipyards get the massive amounts of materials needed to build all those sleek new designs. Also, I would like to argue about the warp fields. one container would need a small, tight warp field, allowing higher speeds. But, on the other hand, the triple container depicted would require a much longer, larger field. Which would be FAR less efficient, and thus remand the ship to lower warp speeds. Again, a question of what the cargo is and how fast it's needed where it's going. the picture showing several transports, each with a single pod, is obviously a small 'fleet' headed at higher warp speeds on a fast resupply run. Now if they had depicted several two or three container ships, we'd know the 'fleet' was moving at considerably slower speeds, and most likely moving less important, or time critical cargoes. Multi container moving is quite common here on earth. In Australia, it is not uncommon to see semi-trailer rigs with two, or even three linked cargo sections attached to one semi rig. It may take awhile to get up to speed, and to slow down, but once at speed it would cruise very well over very long distances. Such would be true of the Ptolemy Class ships and their cargo containers as well. At least it seems so to me. Agree or not, as you wish. the Frank Gamer

I've always loved the Ptolomy class. The remastered TOS missed a bet when they didn't put at least one in the background of an exterior shot when Enterprise was at a starbase. One issue though. The Ptolomy class could haul a maximum of two containers. It says as much in the Technical Manual, as shown at 20:45 at the bottom of the image. So that weird 'bunch of grapes' configuration could not be.

Somewhere in one of the vast sources of information, the maximum number of containers able to be pulled without additional aid (I think) was three. However, there was a warp extender module that could be placed on the (again, second or third) container that allowed for an extension of the warp field to another two or three containers and then that was the maximum. I do not recall the name of the book I saw this in, Jackall's or Jackill's? Something like that. There were at least two such books that contained a lot of additional information (non canon of course).

A nice little ship! I can see why it would need that many shuttles or at least a shuttle bay that can maintain many shuttles, probably for some small pods to move the big cargo container around? Especially when I think about all the colonies we see in star trek that don't have space stations with them or are smaller in general. Maybe it would come handy if there was some way to deliver the cargo without having to beam it all down. Shuttles might be able to do that...or something.

See, the issue I had, is that Gene Rodenberry said that the warp nacelles had to have clear line of sight to each other for the warp field to work. But so many ships don't follow that, and in doing so, ends up making them look off balance.
@thomaspaine64963 жыл бұрын
The tug breaks the Roddenberry rule: 50 percent of Nacelles are in sight of each other. The Nacelles are totally blocked. The split cannister would allow line of sight between them. However Admiral Foley's Dreadnaught is perfectly fine because all the Nacelles have line of sight with each other so the can pair off three different ways. I love the tug. Some cannisters have extra warp engines.
@davidatkinson472 жыл бұрын
IRL it was fairly common practice to launch a hull basically as soon as it was watertight, to clear the slipway so you can start on the next one. The ship will continue to be fitted out elsewhere. Then, commissioned once actually ready for service.
@wchisholm23688 жыл бұрын
The tug was designed before the concept of warp sustainers was introduced in the shows but the sustatiner tech was implied to be an old standard thing. It could be that the pods had warp sustatiners to stretch and support the warp field so the tug could haul multiple pods at warp efficiently. The pods have small impulse engines and rudimentary flight systems already, kind of like a powered barge in the real world that gets a lift from the tugs for faster long distance travel. Since the impulse engines on all pods except the last one would be blocked it just makes sense that the other pods contribute the power that would normally go to their impulse engines to something useful to the assembly, and powering sustatiners would fill that purpose and is in line with the Federation design concepts of flexibility and opportunistic efficiency.

Back in the 1980s I'd spent several afternoons visiting Franz Joseph (Schnaubelt) in San Diego. He told me that the nacelles on his ships are slightly smaller than the TOS Enterprise, and have more of a taper--and that the warp nacelles on the tug are of the same internal design as the Scout; that is, they are not a "dual warp field" design. His deserves 100% credit for the Ptolomey idea, and his daughter, Karen still owns all the (still active!) copyrights to her father's work. I designed a Refit-era tug and made a model of it as a background model for TNG, but it never made it into the show. I use AMT/ERTL tanker truck "tanks" as the cargo containers (Sorry, I'll never go for anything "JJ" related. Ugh). Interesting show.

With all of the possible configurations to the upper equipment pod this ship is probably the workhorse ship of the 24th/25th centuries. The advanced tactical pod makes her firepower equal to that of just about any other class ship in the fleet. Then the imagination takes off you could have a Sensor Pod, a Colonization pod, a troop transport pod, a recovery pod to rescue/recover other vessels, the Hospitalization pod that would make her equal to the medical assets of a starbase, etc, etc, etc... The transport containers have a bridge and impulse engines which can be used in an emergency. As to the number of containers in the one picture in spaceflight chronology, they can be connected by computer to other transports to create a supertrain allowing multipile linked ships to move as one sharing warp fields. In the same book there is the log of an engineer telling how using the supertrain they evacuated an entire planet threatened by a supernova in just a couple of days

Hey guys. After seeing the Dreadnought in the size comparison illustration I have a question. Why does the Dreadnought class have a rear facing navigational deflector dish on the engineering hull? Is it for traveling at warp speed in reverse?

Warp field is not a bubble, at least not in the sense of being spherical. A perfect sphere warp field generates zero speed, deforming the field into a more teardrop shape is what creates the superluminal velocity of warp (or so the novel "My Enemy, My Ally" supposes). The teardrop is generated by default, doing other tricks with a warpfield is advanced piloting that needs a legendary helmsman (e.g. Sulu) to pull off.

Yo CapN' Foley, Thanks for an interesting look at one of my favorite TOS designs. This was also a foreshadowing of what was to come as far as what was/wasn't (or wouldn't be allowed to be, canon) for the future. Though the ship is generally considered canon when the Start Fleet Technical Manual first came out in the seventies there was a falling out with the author and Gene Roddenberry and suddenly it was no longer canon. Considering it's drawings appeared as computer visuals in TOS movies it's canon for me!! This one, the Saladin and the Hermes really captured my imagination as a kid because it took that extra step of making Trek believable, in so doing it instantly made me wonder what serving aboard those types of ships would be like. Well done, thanks for posting ~Mark~

Cargo containers and warp field size -- It would've made more sense to bunch the containers around a center axis, maybe up to 4 or 6, before going lengthwise, and you'd have to have a long something-or-other to generate a strong warp field that far back. Longer or added nacelles? Some sort of spine to attach the sets of containers? -- I grew up seeing this in the Franz Josef manual, but it only occurred to me well into adulthood, why stringing them lengthwise like freight cars or 18-wheeler trailers, doesn't make much sense when dealing with starships. -- But I still wish we'd see more cargo / merchant ships in Trek.

You could make a whole episode // confrontation base with this 1 ship alone. Imagine Binars or Borg or any super computing race hacking and hijacking all of these cargo class ships (full with tricobalt torpedos or tons of dilithium or something that will big boom) and reprogramming them to all go full warp speed into the nearest space stations or resting fleet. (like a big coordinated attack) and starfleet has to decide if they should destroy all the Ptolomey ships or find a way to disable them at the last second. Starfleet could try disabling the engines to one of these rogue ships hacked by enemy only to see them plea for help as the hackers self destruct the ship. Maybe in the end the hackers call off their attack before everything self destructs because they realize they are attacking starfleet based on falsified information. Then they become allies that help fortify their computer security. In order for this to make sense though the hauled cargo needs to be REALLY REALLY important and critical to a war effort. Otherwise it just seems out of place like the Titanic being used to haul bails of hay across the ocean. I also imagine the saucer section being super reduced to account for that its only a cargo transport OR the ships are very modular and can switch the bottom sections in moments. Could also see these being used for mass migrations or resettling planet migrators. Could also literally turn them into "space trains" where their is a huge long rail behind the saucer and have nacell engines every 3 cargos to extend the warp field. Like an engine and caboose.

I have a challenge for our local artist here. Let's say that Starfleet, being the geniuses they are didn't have the leisure of designing multiple classes for multiple tasks. Instead, they designed one ship to be a do all, for all, in all. What would that ship look like and why?
@DrewLSsix8 жыл бұрын
Probably the constitution. I always saw that configuration to be the most versatile design possible, there's not much it can't do including towing cargo. The variants we see I feel are specialized ships that can do a particular job more efficiently but lack the breadth of capability the Connies enjoy.
@morkofork9 жыл бұрын
NCC - 3801? That makes it 1001 ships newer than the Excelsior yet it has TOS styling and is apparently from the Cage era?
@DrewLSsix8 жыл бұрын
Likely a different naming convention or registry series relative to the ships of the line. One of the issues with Trek canon as we know it is there's so little world building that what is known can't really cover what must also exist in the world. If in the TOS era there are 12 "starships" as quoted in one episode referring to the enterprise and her sisters then there must also be a substantial support fleet. Obviously those 12 ships are not responsible for every task required for maintaining colonies and stations so you must assume there is a huge number of ships never seen. You must then also assume that something like the 1701 registry number can't possibly represent one of the newest ships in the fleet and all other existing ships use sequentially smaller numbers.

I would of thought like most military service's and i understand Starfleet is not just military, but i would of thought most f this would off been pushed on to civilian contractors so i would of expected a more diverse design for a cargo hauler.

The company coca-cola had to diversify their portfolio in the future so those are actually antimatter containers.

You're saying the only thing Abrams Trek engines are good for is ferrying cargo? Well, they're butt-ugly otherwise, so why not?

6 engines, bubble extender that doubles as a retreating shield in the back. After the momentum building faze you got the fastest ship in the quadrant! Hope you can stop it before it passes you and all you see is its rear end. Comercial Class Space Hauler: (non weaponized) All efforts are diverted to engine speed and maintaining warp bubble. facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=1052502201441582&set=a.889480244410446.1073741829.100000454356568&type=1&theater

Why do you need an entire saucer section for a TUG? TUG's usually do not even have to leave the system they are in so they don't even need sleeping quarters or a crew of more than a handful. Now if it was a repair ship that would make more sense but it seems they just Slapped a saucer on it because that's what TOS ships look like and called it a Day. Very meh Design i would have used the Fed Patrol ship as the base added FOUR Engines to Give it the TUG power it needs and it would have turned out Better then this design IMO.
