I purchased this ship as a toy back in the 90's. It had a weird light aqua color and 3 buttons along the top that, when pushed, made three different sounds (cloak, disruptors and torpedo I think). I gave it to my nephew. He would hold it by the nacelles like he was searching for water and run all over the place with it.

So easily identifiable as a Klingon Warship. Designed for battle and toughness, it's the Vorcha!!! The ship just screams "tough" when you look at it. Minimal window ports, nacelles that look much more armored then Federation styles, and a huge main disruptor at the front, you know the ship has one purpose if you bump into it in deep space. I would love to know the hull strength compared to a standard Federation ship of the era. Great briefing!!!

One of my favorite ship designs for sure! I love the klingon aesthetic that somewhat resembles the D7, together with a more distinguished look and colour compared to what we saw in the original series. At least to me it seems to show more character. What I most liked about this ships appearance in TNG and later on is, that it really showed that klingons are not just "stupid" space warriors that don't care about anything but honor due combat. They are a space faring civilization that is technological advanced and is capable of researching, designing and building new ships. They are not dependend on trading technology like the ferengi and they don't keep the same designs for decades because they *have* to, but because an earlier change wasn't nescessary.

as you mentioned at 16:45 there is yellow back-lit grilling on the top and on the bottom of the CGI and also the real model. If the lower one is the main deflector, the upper one is in exactely the perfect spot for a deflector once the "turret" or disruptor pod separates... so I say deflectors! :-) I should mention that on my 1991 issue AMT model kit of this ship, the bright yellow things attached to the outer rear wings are supposed to be disruptor banks according to the build plans... if the color scheme is indeed yellow for weapon port (like on the TMP starships), then the bright yellow strips lining the outer walls of the forward disruptor head module could be 6 disruptor (hatches?) on each side 8-/ ...or maybe AMT ERTL kit assembly guides are not entirely canon xD

Great rundown, new viewer here. Some things I would like to add (did not read all comments so sorry if i repeat): 1) I have only seen this listed as an assault cruiser meaning it is going to hit hard and fast. 2) in earth navy ships you have torpedo launchers with X tubes per launcher, this being said if you have 2 fore one aft launcher with 3 tubes per launcher that would make sense for a ship set up like this. finally I would like to point out that the raised bits in the armor could hid escape pods

originally according to the model i had when i was a kid had the front sections was meant to detach as an orbital disruptor. it was about the size of the enterprise saucer section.

Perhaps there are very good engineering reasons why the vessel isn't covered in armaments. For example power to support not only the firing of the weapons but their heating and cooling cycles while providing thrust for locomotion, the shielding, the central computer and life support for the crew.

The ship could have a lot of shuttles for boarding parties. It's harder to fight your enemies if you have a metric butt-ton of klingons wrecking your ship from the inside. We know that klingons are fans of boarding things that don't belong to them such as DS9, so it might make sense that the new Attack Cruiser would come with boarding parties. If I remember correctly, boarding shuttles was also the special power of the Vorcha in Star Trek Armada.
@Intrepidthegenuine9 жыл бұрын
I was thinking that perhaps the detachable portion on the front could be replaced with different modules depending on mission type. I could easily see that they could attach a troop carrier to the front that could land warriors on a planet where the transporters aren't a viable option. They could even have used it to transport space station modules to conquered worlds for orbital construction. I love the Vorcha class it looks balanced and mean.
@shinjofox9 жыл бұрын
It is more likely that the different disruptors cover the ship at different angles providing a full 720 degree sphere of fire around the ship. This would mean you never have more than 5 or 6 firing in a given instance or at a single given target, maybe less than that.

@TwistedSisterHaratiofales9 жыл бұрын
+Mark Plott They were really bad in the shows and movies about using the bird of prey and sizing it way out of scale, and also using them for like over 100 years in the story line. In yesterdays Enterprise they use 3 and call them like a bigger class of cruiser. They just up scaled the BOPs to like a size that would have been 5 to 7 times the size of the original. The other classic example is the one that faced the Enterprise that Kirk destroys in the Search for Spock. The BOP is shown on the other side of the Enterprise and appears to be the same size. In the Undiscovered country they show a shot of a BOP besides the Enterprise-A from above that is basically in scale proportion and the Bop is 5 times smaller than the E. So it comes down to the director, the story, the way they want it to appear at the time. I wish as You it sounds like that they would have took some time earlier and designed some new ships for the Klingons in the story, instead of using BOPs and Ktinga's for a century, and the sizing tricks.

It might be that the forward disruptor module for the Vorcha separates due to the possibility of secondary explosions? Also, with the main gun and many if not most of the secondary guns on it, it might have its own antimatter reactor so as to keep those guns recharged? Another reason for a need to separate the module?Plus, of course, a need to upgrade weapons would allow a new module to replace the old without redesigning the whole ship.

I never imagined the Klingons to be Stupid, or per se Ignorant as a race, however they do portray them in the show to be not concerned about important things at times. Worf is portrayed as highly intelligent, but having to be verbally restrained a lot in TNG, until DS9 where he seems to learn more control over anger issues. Where am I going with this. I think it would be interesting to show a Klingon who is an engineer, and or a ship designer, or group of designers who are somewhat humbled slightly looked down upon members of the Klingon Empire. They are the Geeks and Nerds of the Empire, and along with medical personnel, and or merchants, cooks, and other professions that anyone else would need and commend. The Klingons would need these people also, but treat them almost as second hand citizens unless they were preforming those tasks and also were Warriors at the same time. This would also make problems because You cant have your best scientists, and Ship designers getting killed off. I do like the way with the Cardasians, and Klingons that the ships look bulky, and even Star Wars Junky on the outside as a reflection of their cultures. I do get a hair of seeing the Cardasian ships all looking like that emblem of their empire, as if someone ordered the ship designers to make the ships that way and just keep using the same exact design, but make it bigger. I would like to see almost a Klingon design in the Cardasian ship upgrade from when Ducat stole the Bird of Prey.Anyway I think the Cardasians would have had just a little more respect for the alternate jobs then the Klingons. I do think the Klingon ships no matter how large they become would always somewhat look like they made something from a big junk yard except when the first D7 came out because it was all smooth on the outside. I really liked the Ktinga also, but I think after that they worked to hard to make them look Klingon. They did well, but I think they could have varied the designs a bit more. Star Fleet ships all seem to scream Star Fleet yet they all don't look like the TOS Enterprise.

The Klingons are a warrior culture like feudal japan, warriors are honoured and dominate government and politics but not everybody is a warrior. DS9 did a far better job at showing this than TNG, we saw Klingon chefs, lawyers spies, merchants and criminals

@brokedude99994 жыл бұрын
It would be unreasonable to assume any Kilingon Ship wouldn't have escape pods. Space isn't always a battle ground, yet it is still dangerous. The Sub-Space Filament episode being an example. (Data had his head removed to fix the warp core) Warriors that die in Battle is an honorable Death. Dying because space is a bitch- isn't honorable. Those Warriors being able to egress and provide better service/ glory later is only fitting with the Lore of these people.

Escape pods on a Klingon ship? xD
@TwistedSisterHaratiofales9 жыл бұрын
+Chris Cunningham The escape pods are because they don't have toilet facilities on board Klingon ships. They use the escape pods to fill up with bodily waste until its full and then they jettison them into space. If they are in a battle with an enemy they deem un honorable, they launch the pods at the enemy ships, to splatter on their hulls. And if they do have a member of their crew who is so cowardice that they choose to flee in the face of death, then they have to be immersed in the crap so to speak until captured or rescued.

I remember first seeing this in action when Gowron was going to be installed and they had to fight off the Durass sister's allies. Worf was on board trying to get his family honored restored when they were fired upon. They fired the main "cannon" and I was very disappointed with that lightning ball thingy that shot out. NOT impressive. Had that been like the Galaxy X main cannon, then you would have something. I think the Vorcha was like a Galaxy class vessel when it came to be shown in battle. That's the trouble with Star Trek. In order to build drama, they don't have the crew rely on their ship, instead the ship gets its ass kicked by lesser ships, the music can get more dramatic and faster tempo, while Picard tells Data to hurry up and find a solution. The result is that some fans call the Galaxy class ship a white elephant and is too weak to be effective or a serious threat. So it was with the Vor'cha class ship when it was attackedby three birds of prey. Worf had to be clever and aim the disrupters visually not with sensors. So the bird of prey dropped its shields and Worf fired. I do get tired of hanging the ship with poor weapons or poor design. Sometime the ship needs to come the hero.
