FYI, both the Klingon and Federation use a deuterium slush as fuel for the matter-anti-matter warp reactors (supplemented by the bussard collectors on an emergency basis). Dilithium was stated on screen in TNG as not being the fuel source, but used in "focusing" the matter-anti-matter particle stream. The Klingon engines are so small because the deuterium slush is stored in tanks that comprise the bulk of the volume in the "gull wings" of the rear hull of the D7. The Federation warp engines are so large because the Federation has their deuterium tanks within the warp engine housing itself, and both the deuterium and the matter-anti-matter warp engines are physically spaced well away from the crew occupied areas of the ship (and are jettisonable in an emergency) because the Federation follows superior safety standards. As was noted, the boom of the Klingon D7 can separate and act as a sublight life boat in the event of the warp engines going super critical. This will only save the ethnic Klingon officers, whose quarters are in the primary hull, and not the rest of the crew, but is viewed as an acceptable safety margin by the Klingons. In this context we see how the Klingon D7 has considerably less crew habitable space than the Constitution class (about 50% less living space), as only the very center of the rear hull, and not the gull wings, are livable space.

A few notes... 1] Interesting bit of trivia is that the original length for the D7 was actually 216 meters or so, not 228. BTW, the class name for the D7 is Klolode, which I think first appeared in one of the Star Trek Log books by Alan Dean Foster. 2] Have you seen the closeups of the model of the G'roth, from "Trials and Tribble-ations"? here's a lot more detail there, though it's hugely more subtle than on the K't'inga. 3] The cross-section (ca. 9:15) is the Klolode, not the K't'inga. It's based on Mike McMaster's drawings. Notably, you can see the main sensor in the forward hull, where the K't'inga mounted a pho-torp tube. Also, note the TOS-style engines. 4] (ca. 10:25) - A turboshaft runs down the length of the "neck": www.cygnus-x1.net/links/lcars/blueprints/book-of-klingon-plans-sheet-6.jpg 5] (ca. 13:02) - That's the ventral view. 6] (ca 14:00) - back in the day, the original McMaster plans showed the Klolode/D7 with phasers. That's a really old graphic; I haven't seen it in years! But it looks like the McMaster plans are its source material. 7] (ca. 17:30) - There's a really good sketch by Andrew Probert that sort of "places" the bridge set in the K't'inga superstructure. If you haven't seen it, I highly recommend it. Andy really thought this stuff through! Lots of fun stuff there!

Here is the reason for the "plate look" for the K'tinga vs. the D7. The K'tinga removed a second hull skin that was applied to all D7s. This was done to save weight. So what you are seeing as "plates" is the support system for the outer hull skin. According to FASA sources (which was under contract with Paramount Pictures) The D-7 had six variants There was some variants D-7B, D through F, H through L N through Q.. D-7A is the Painbinger of K’t’agga, D7-C is the Bringer Of Destiny or K't'kara (which was the D-7 is use during the Four Year War), D-7G is the Truthbringer or K’t'alla, the D-7M is the Bringer Of Destruction or K’t’inga (K'tinga), D-7R is the Bringer Of Agony or K't'rika, D-7S is the Bringer Of Justice or K't'mara. Klingon nacelles are smaller due to the lack of shielding. The D-7A and C lacked torpedoes (the Klingons had or DIsruptors and Heavy Disrupters during that time), The D-7G and R was armed with Plasma Torpedoes. The D-7M and S is the only variants that were equipped with Photon Torpedoes. The Klingons viewed the plasma and photon as enemy weapon, but the admiralty forced the weapons on the Klingon Navy. I have seen a T variant (I think Q'nos One was in fact a T variant)

One thing I wanted to point out about the use of phasers on Klingon ships in SFB, was that the game was based on TOS, and in TOS canon, "Klingon phasers" are mentioned in "Errand of Mercy." At that point in time, the word "phaser" was used sort of generically.

The small scout Bird of Prey that was in 'Wrath of Kahn' was the B'rel class. The larger cruiser sized Bird of Prey that was in 'Yesterday's Enterprise' were the K'vort class. If they used the same design for two such differently sized vessels then I imagine they used it for even more classes so there might be quite a few different sized ships of the same configuration. (In-universe, not counting the production crew simply re-using models)
@jamiebraswell55206 жыл бұрын
Cap Tin , I think you meant Star Trek III The Search For Spock, not The Wrath of Khan. Anyhow, The Next Generation was well known for using old models from the movies. The Bird of Prey model was designed to be a small 12 man scout/attack ship, but TNG used it for large cruisers as big as Enterprise D. It always annoyed me because I do not think the design lends itself to being such large vessels. It never looked right to me as a giant ship. But even in the films, the size changed. The scout ship was bigger in Trek III than it was in Star Trek IV The Voyage Home. Compare shots of the crew exiting the ship when it lands on Vulcan, then later in the next film when it show people boarding. Suddenly, the Bird Of Prey is a lot smaller.

I believe the ship in the deck view diagram at 9:15 is a D7 rather than a K't'inga. If you refer to the comparison chart shown at 7:34, you can see that the sensor dome behind the bridge pod is taller on the K't'inga. The ship in the deck view diagram has the shorter (D7) dome.

My guess is that Klingon ship sizes are smaller because they don't have labs, the personal needed tor them, or recreation spaces (TOS - Trouble with Tribbles). Also, I doubt they would build in a safety margin or backups. (Safety is for the weak) These are warships not exploration vessels. This could mean they don't plan for long deployments and crew comfort can suffer. Hot bunking in any space that can hold a bed isn't out of the question. If they are designed tor short missions they car carry less food and other consumables. Last thought, never seen a Klingon escape pod, (escape may not me an option) which would save room as well..

The nacelle size difference could be down to two different methods of achieving the same thing. But then I'd also imagine the federation nacelles would have a number of safety redundancies that the Klingons likely wouldn't bother with.

Another possible explanation for the smaller Klingon nacelles (besides the K't'inga being a smaller ship) is that the Klingon nacelles do not contain all the hardware that's contained in the Federation design. If the Drell 7 diagram (13:34) is correct, then the Bussard collectors are on the wing, rather than in the nacelle. If other components are also relocated to the wing, then the nacelle may contain little more than the warp coils. Keeping this in mind, if you look at the comparison diagram at 18:26, and compare the K't'inga nacelle to the warp coil section of the Enterprise (which I assume is the blue glowy bit) the K't'inga nacelle suddenly doesn't look all that much smaller.

Also, the federation being a science driven body, seem to be taught to improvise with their surroundings in ways that few would think to do, and may have tech built into their ships with that in mind. In every show, the ship is often doing things it wasn't meant to do, using ship systems in ways they were not intended. It seems that that mentality is strong within starfleet. Being able to suddenly use the gasses of a nearby nebula to their advantage, or expelling plasma from their nacelles to simulate damage, etc. It seems to me that kind of thinking is ingrained into the federation, and the larger nacelles may be a result of that. Okay, I'm a little high. But it makes sense. :P

I remember buying an AMT D-7 model WAAAAAY Back In The Day...even then I thought it was certainly alien, compared to the Federation. When the K't'inga hit the screen, its sheer detail matched the Ridgeheads. So, if a Fan Film D-7 boom separates, they should also make sure the rebelling Klingons are blown out into space on screen!
@sirbobbyuk9 жыл бұрын
If you were to silhouetted either the D7 or the k'tinga you would notice that it would be little harder to hit the ship while it was doing evasive manoeuvring. the bulbous forward section would present a harder target to hit that the star drive section, and as was mentioned the star drive is heavily shielded so could take a pounding. There could another reason for the design of d7, which relates to its predecessor the d6. I noticed that in combat, from a scene in prelude to Axanar, when the d6 was hit the ship broke in two, the weakest point being the neck section, if this happens it's my assumption that emergency bulkhead doors automatically shut and a emergency battery system kicks in providing life support and keys systems. It is also my assumption that the bulbous section has a small backup impulse engine. These I think have been incorporated into the D7
@corranlindsay26299 жыл бұрын
I wish I could remember where I read it, but the explanation for the very thin neck was because of the constant mutinies on Klingon ships, the neck kept the officers and the crew separate and meant they couldn't storm into the officer section in force, because they'd get bottle necked in front of the one door.

the "Feathering" on the K't'inga is possibly a result of the collaboration of the Romulan/Klingon alliance. They (the Klingons) traded warship technology for Cloaking Technology.

Haven't read the other comments yet, but Kirk makes reference to Klingon phasers in the original series (perhaps in Errand of Mercy?), and in The Animated Series, the D7 is shown to use phasers. They also fire a magnetic pulse in TOS (Sulu yells "Magnetic pulse!" just before they are hit by Klingon fire in one episode -Day of the Dove? - and it rocks the ship).
@dougmillhoff91923 жыл бұрын
The D7 has turned up enough times with K't'inga-style "armor" in the last couple of decades that we must assume both ships have more or less the same plating. It presumably reflects internal structure. I would suggest that the lack of detail on TOS ships is also the reason it is apparently a little longer and plumper than K't'inga: It is a stealthy outer hull that was retrofitted to counter Federation sensor technology. And not needed in late models and in K'T'inga because they had acquired Romulan cloaking technology. I would also speculate that the nacelles may have had variable geometry, explaining the peculiar angle of their frontal profile. I have a lit 1/350 K'T'inga buildup in which the nacelles were mistakenly aligned vertically, it actually looks better - and fits with this theory. They mention the original D7 studio model, I was actually loaned that model to produce a set of technical drawinfs for a Paramount licensee - one of the images in the video looks VERY much like it may have been adapted from my illustration.

Maybe the reason why the Klingon's stuck with the D-7 for so long is that the Imperial navy wasn't as massive as StarFleet. Maybe each Klingon House bought whatever ships they could afford, and it wasn't until TMP that the Klingon Navy started taking off. Remember, in TNG, it was House Duras against other houses in the Empire and each house had it's own fleet. That might also explain why the Vorcha was the biggest ship, it was all that the House could afford.

D7. Reasons for the engine placement and design. Placement was because they produced a lot of radiation and the Klingons were not a big into shielding from radiation thus the Boom Bridge way out front. Federation was more into redundancy and safety. Think 1970 Soviet Submarines vs Los Angeles and Ohio boats. In most novels the Klingons were more advanced inventing Transporters and Warp engines before most other races (The Final Reflection) . FASA and SFB had other D variants besides the 7. I seem to remember SFB (in the 1980's) having Disruptors on the plans and they were "=" to the various phaser 1, 2, 3, 4 types as far as damage and range. Also I forget where I read that the 1700 or 1701 Refit engines stole some Klingon Tech in the design thus the "slim" nacelles. DId SFB list the D7 as a light cruiser in the Reliant/Miranda class range? Mostly they traveled in Wolf Packs of 3 to gang up on lone ships like a Conny or lower class ship?

Regarding the nacelle size - the size or mass of the start ship seems to dictate the size of the nacelles. The Constitution class looks to have more mass than the k'tinga, and has larger engines to compensate. Likewise the excelsior class has much more mass and similarly is equipped with larger nacelles.

Fascinating stuff for an old Star Fleet Battles guy such as myself. I THINK that somewhere I read that the KTinga's panels were meant to be adjustable like wing flaps on an airplane to help steer it through a planet's atmosphere. Here's a question I hope that someone can shed siome light on: where-when wasthe first time a Klingon ship was referred to as a D-7? I'm fairly certain that TOS never made mention of it. And green is a dorky color for a Rom ship, btw.
@tfranz1966ify8 жыл бұрын
When you reference the size of the engines on the D7 being smaller the engines on the Connie, it comes down to the mass of the ships. Since the mass of the Connie is greater than the D7, the Connie would need to generate a larger warp field, not because of a less advance tech.

@gavinjoth53474 жыл бұрын
couple things about the D7, the Klingons didnt care as much about radiation exposure, because they lived shorter lives, and leading into the second point, the secondary hull (wing section) was often crewed by slave species. Again, radiation exposure. Also these slaves at times would revolt, which is the main reason the neck and head section separates. Not as a lifeboat for the whole crew, but so the officers could escape a mutiny.

My take on the nacelle size is dealing with the nature of the ships. The nacelle generates the warp field whose side is relative to the mass of the ship to being moved. Klingon ships are more pure warships with not much in the way of science and laboratory demands, whereas the Federation ships are more explorers. The Federation ships would need more power for scientific surveys, so the warp core would be bigger, so it would need a larger nacelle to provide a stable warp bubble. This sort of makes sense if you look at the Defiant class, that has no science capabilities and smaller mass. Even the Intrepid class, like Voyager follows this, as it doesn't have a lot of tactical provisions, being more of a science vessel that a war ship.Just my theory though.
@petero.74877 жыл бұрын
Interestingly, the K'Tinga might not have been scaled right: The top of the hammer head is about as thick as the Enterprise's saucer rim in both cases. With the longer nacelles, and the remaining proportions, it would probably measure out to 235 or so meters. In TMP's Novelization by Gene Roddenberry, he also said the same thing, though the novel wasn't technically canon.

I have a theory that the nacelles' size difference is down to not maximum speed but how quickly you get to it. Overall volume of the D7/K't'inga is considerably less so lower mass. Smaller nacelle still provides considerable acceleration, fed vessels larger volume, greater mass, larger nacelles and a bit more for superior acceleration.

D7 in TOS didnt cloak. ktinga did in ds9 when they brougt out older ships to fill out the fleet. i think the d7 and ktinga are different ships and not refits. just different classes built on the same frame for faster cheaper construction.

Star Fleet Battles simply took "phasers" from the same blueprints AMT used to build the studio model and the 1/650 model kit. As far as the Klingon using "disruptors' and the Federation using "phasers," I would love to see a single instance, in an actual TV show or movie, of aliens using "phasers." warp engines would create the same speeds for same tech levels. i think the trade off would be power consumption and efficiency. klingons being more warlike design their ships small to present a smaller target to hit. the engines might use more power and operate less efficiently to get the same performance as federation ships. i think the klingons would accept this design because the engines would be much smaller targets. federation ships were not designed primarily for war, so they are designed for peek efficiency and lower power consumption because they have to support the science facilities that the klingons have no use for.

I love the TOS design aesthetic best of all, but I know why they had to add "greebling" for the movies - it's because a ship with a totally smooth hull conveys no information to the viewer regarding its size or scale. "Real" starships would probably look like TOS ships because such things wouldn't be a concern, and it's easier and more efficient to build large, smooth panels.

Seeing these side shots, I really think the design would work better with a length of 300-350 m.

If klingon engines/ nacelles really were more efficient, why not build bigger ones to gain an advantage in speed? Makes no sense. But maybe part of the propulsion mechanism resides inside the "wings". This way the engines would only appear smaller (from the outside). - Or the designers did mainly care for looks rather than plausibility ;)

K'tingas are my third favorite non-Human design after B5 Whitestars and Romulan Valdore/Norexians. I like the K'tingas over the raw D-7, although obviously, the difference is not that large.

Is this the ship in the beginning of TMP? Or is that a different class?

Why are some references to the K't'inga labeled (D-9 K't'inga)?

I always thought it was a D8.

gregory wray Watch our Saucer separation episode. The Klingon ships have boom separation. It's part of the Starfleet Battles game. We go in depth about it during the saucer separation episode though.

In my head-canon the neck section of the D-7 has a transport tube that shoots you from one part of the ship to the other, like the old B-36: books.google.com/books?id=Fy0DAAAAMBAJ&lpg=PP1&pg=PA144#v=onepage&q&f=false

The K'T'inga is an upgraded D7 class. Similar how the Constitution-class was upgraded.
@flatheadgg24438 жыл бұрын
RaderizDorret that's correct but the k'tinga is a little bit smaller than the D7
@Ebeneezergoode18 жыл бұрын
Dana Francies I feel that they're all both D7 and K't'inga. Starfleet reporting name like the NATO reporting name for the Schulke submarine is Alfa, and Tu95 is Bear. It'd explain why a ship in the D-series could be a bird of prey. And why what appeared to be a K't'inga in Voyager was called a D7.
@RaderizDorret8 жыл бұрын
Flathead Gg244 The refit Constitution class was also a bit smaller than its original form in some dimensions. The K'Ting'a is much more heavily armed and armored, so the smaller size might be to compensate for the greater mass (lower volume for the same mass tends not to be a stressful on the structure, for example).

Polar Lights need to make an accurate model of the K'Tinga in scale with its Enterprises 1000 and 350 scale. The AMT model of the K'Tinga is grossly inaccurate and over-priced for something so obsolete. The marketplace is oversaturated with Connies and once a company releases a definitive kit of a vessel it's time for everyone else to do new subjects. A 350 scale USS Defiant from DS9 would be very nice.

I always felt the Klingons had far superior warp pods, they have been in power for a few centuries at least by Archer's time. They are not as crude or primitive as they make ya think in ST4. :)
@Ebeneezergoode18 жыл бұрын
+TheCastellan regarding this, I think a lot of people forget that the Starfleet warp nacelle is "all in one", i.e. you've got your warp coils, bussard ram-scoops, and field emitters etc all in one unit. With the D7/K't'inga, the grilles in the outer portion of the wings are identified as hydrogen collectors, so they're doing part of the job of what's being done by the nacelle on the contemporary Federation ship. Also you could consider differences in the light of say a European or Japanese 4 cylinder engine with a turbo-charger etc vs a naturally aspirated but big American V8. They're both powerful in their own ways, and their designs give them different draw-backs. But I get the feeling Klingon battle-cruisers weren't designed for the same "round trip" range the Connie was, the size could have as much to do with how long speed can be sustained rather than what the top-speed is, like with cooling issues etc for the warp-coils. A bigger nacelle would allow you to alternate coils for example. And it'd explain why warp capable Klingons would have a sleeper ship i.e. the T'Ong from the TNG episode "Emissary".

Even though this is one of my favorite ships in trek....that long skinny neck is kind of pointless. They had to do something to make the ship look like more of a threat i guess.

Stephen Arseneau always been a problem for me. It serves no real propose. Cut it out and attach the head to the hull, and you lose nothing but looks.
@poseidon50037 жыл бұрын
As far as function goes, you are exactly correct. Unless they need that shape for their warp or shield geometry.
@thehillbillygamer21838 жыл бұрын
yes the Klingons were more advanced technologically they had a more efficient warp drive system the Klingon said Interstellar travel centuries before humans and this was mainly because of the hurricane region of Kronos the herd was an alien race that invaded the Klingon Homeworld when this happened the Klingons were the nineteen-sixties nineteen-seventies level technology and it took the Klingons a hundred years maybe more but they did reverse engineer the stack to the Clevelands captured a few of the smaller hurt craft so I heard version of a heavy fighter or maybe her closing of the Delta Flyer Runabout this craft was severely damaged so they can just take off in them but they did reverse engineer just like today and all the sudden I could have a Runabout and give it sell it to the United States Air Force think how much and how much Advance would be in 3240 years
