This ship is awesome. I love the use of smaller ships in Star Trek, as the original trend was to go bigger and bigger. At one point, the interiors always seem too small for those massive ships.
@saquist8 жыл бұрын
OH I LIKE THIS SHIP BUT: I have to critique it like any other. *Problems* -Intrepid was a 3 year ship. At this size (like Defiant) this ship is at best a 2 year ship (fuel supply limitation) -The impulse engine should not be at the top of the ship (yes Excelsior and Constitution are design errors) it should be at the axis center of gravity -A ship with One impulse engine mounted in the center is not as maneuverable as a ship with engines mounted more outboard for thrust vectoring. (this is why Galaxy lumbers) -Power Levels: You can't have a fast ship, a high firepower ship, a high shielded ship and a moderate range ship and a small ship, all in the same package. Think about it. At warp a ship doesn't use it's phasers. That energy can go into the Shields or the Engines. But in a sub-light battle the power of the engine speed is supplied to the shields. Ships like Intrepid Sovereign and Defiant use multi stream reactors for more power. Defiant consumes a lot of fuel to operate at Galaxy Class Firepower levels. That holds back it's maximum warp, range and shield power. No small ship should have the whole package. -Thrusters aren't used to maneuver ships in battle. They do not have the Delta-V to change the ships angular momentum from the impulse engines which can achieve light speed. YES they can pivot the ship but that's not the same as changing directions. Thus bigger thrusters would not be more beneficial. -The articulation frame goes too high -I don't like the Sovereign quantum turret (bad design) The Good -I've always loved Intrepid Speed-tech. This is a very good use. These linear body ships still need to have the engines see each other. -I love the size it's perfect as an interceptor or scout. -I disagree with Samuel I really like the Perspective 3/4 views where either the Saucer or the Nacelles dominate the view. -It looks fantastic on the ground and seems very very well proportioned just like Intrepid. -The nacelles are very unique and familiar. I like the return of the inter-cooler ridge (now with blue lights) like Constitution and Excelsior) The nacelles are also elegantly angular (the red part is a bit generic) every other part is extremely graceful. I've always said the nacelles can make or break the design. -You definitely chose the right pylon style simple but different and not too radical. (they are right to say this is Sternbach like) -The clam shell was a very good call. -The position and style of the phaser canons is MOST appropriate you should done the same with the Quantums (like defiant) I give a 8/10 Very very good design.

Good critique but I'm curious as to why you don't like the sovereign-style launcher. It gives a single launcher the ability to fire in a nearly 180 degree arc, although I guess it's a bit exposed. Seems versatile to me.

Easily one the best looking ships I've seen in a while that pushes the frontier on intrepid, defiant, and prometheus style design. Moving parts seems so retro in the future but design styles always circle back in time. The sense of proportion and scale compared to other ships (the galaxy class ships in particular) augments its position as an escort or mobile attack ship. Wish I could have a poster on my wall.

This is an absolutely stunning ship and it's definitely in my top 10, possibly top five! I am blown away by the perfectly balanced proportions, the sharp but not too sharp saucer section, smoothly integrated secondary hull and I love the rotating nacelles for maximum warp efficiency (and minimal damage to warp-space). Then while at impulse they slide down where they're slightly more protected and provided clear firing Arcs for the phasers, are protected from a frontal attack and you're out of the way for shuttle operations. I think this is a great used articulating pylons especially since it's designed for atmospheric travel they are tucked down to provide a more air than a shape. There are so many details about this ship that I absolutely love, it looks in all ways absolutely fit for a Canon Star Trek program! It is a much more balanced design than the Voyager. I love the proportion size of the engines to the ship and when they arch up with there pointed design it's like it's actually ripping into Warp which is an excellent effect. My one question is on the bottom of the saucer there appeared to be an outline of an area for a captains shuttle similar to Voyager. This wasn't addressed in the video; is there a drop ship or Captains yacht ? Referring to the outline just ahead of the quantum torpedo launchers. Thanks so much for sharing this ship! I hope it's some point somebody licenses it or uses it in some official manner because of all the fan ships I've seen this one definitely belongs in Star Trek Canon! Superb work and the animations that Samuel did were breathtaking and showed it off in all the best possible detail and in motion it is elegant yet dangerous which fits its Mission profile perfectly. Major kudos!!

I can see this as a fast scout/interceptor and used as a support ship for larger vessels who could supply a interceptor to extend operations. This ship has at most has 9 phaser arrays, with the aft upper and lower emitters sharing a single plasma system so down to 7 reducing power demands. As for power have a high performance core for standard ops and a compact runabout sized defiant style core for tactical use. this ship perfect for marines. Small, high speed, high atmospheric and planetary landing capability, perfect for assault teams when transporters are unavailable.

Great design. I have often wanted to see a Star Trek series that treats Starfleet and the UFP more seriously and realistically. For instance, the Enterprise-D would never have been too far from at least 1 or more smaller escorts. Imagine TNG with the Enterprise having maybe 2 escort ships within a few lightyears. Could have had a few episodes where they come to save the day, or the Big-E has to save them. You get to know their command crews a little bit (of course, not as much as the main cast). But there would be storytelling ideas there. Kind of like how the Excelsior-Class USS Hood always seemed to be nearby in the early-mid seasons to rendez-vous with the Enterprise, but the idea expanded to its logical conclusion. I feel like writers nowadays have no real-world experience. They're trust funders who went to NYU and then straight to Hollywood. Seems like back in the 1960s the writers had some real-world experience under their belts, being army veterans and whatnot. Anyway, I feel like Starfleet has not been explored the way it should and could be.
@adamlytle26158 жыл бұрын
I agree with most of what you've said - except that although Gene Roddenberry and some of his contemporaries had real world experience, TOS still established some very silly and unrealistic tropes that Trek still slavishly adheres to - like the command crew going on away missions. I understand this was because of budgetary limitations and simplicity of story telling, but still... Oh, and nowhere is this more evident than on DS9 once they got the Defiant. The way they staffed that thing was ridiculous. By rights it should have basically had a dedicated crew, maybe with some station crew members rotating in - but probably not the senior staff who would/should be otherwise occupied running the station. At the very least, Kira & Odo certainly shouldn't have served aboard it, and the station's chief science officer certainly shouldn't have been manning the helm. To your point about storytelling - I've been thinking a lot lately about how the Enterprise D was such a "big" ship with a thousand people on it, and really for a ship of that size, you really should have had advanced scout vessels. Something maybe a step up from a runabout, like that Archer class TOS era ship. You could build your primary cast not around the command crew, but around an assortment of crew members - some command crew, some civilian, some crew members of the scout vessel(s) that go away for short periods of time and then return home to the ship.
@eXcommunicate19798 жыл бұрын
You're right about the "Star Trek tropes." To expand on your ideas, a show with: 1. The "Big E" has 2 smaller escort ships (an older Excelsior-Refit Class ship for a nice nostalgic change of interior, and an Interceptor Class ship), 1 for grunt work and defense and 1 for dedicated science missions, either within a few light years on side missions, or most of the time in close proximity within the same star system. We get to know some of their command staff. Maybe they rotate into the Big E every now and then and some of our "main crew" from the Big E (Riker, Tasha, et al.) rotate to the escorts on side missions. This is a "deep space exploration squadron" meant to be able to meet any unknown threat during their mission. Perhaps one of the ships is a Klingon ship. A big experiment and risk for the Federation-Klingon alliance. Lots of tension there. 2. The Big E has a dedicated "Away Team" crew, almost like the MACOs from ENT. Worf could be the leader of this team in our hypothetical TNG show. These aren't your usual red shirts. When they die, we care. Worf cares. Maybe Worf develops PTSD, something "shameful" for Klingons. 3. Shifts! There're 3 shifts aboard ship. This should be depicted more. Data sitting in the captain's chair more often since he's the 3rd officer and all. He gets the "graveyard shift" but in actuality each shift would technically be staffed almost exactly the same. In this case, do we have a captain and co-captain? Is Riker more like a co-captain in this scenario? 4. Refueling, refurbishing, resupplying. I'd love to see some kind of Antimatter fueling ship rendez-vous with the squadron. Hell, I'd like to see it at least mentioned! 5. Away Mission precautions, like hazmat suits and breathers. Make the shit look cool and futuristic. 6. Promotions. Move up or out. 7. More alien crew members, some exotic.
@adamlytle26158 жыл бұрын
All good ideas. In thinking about a more realistic approach to big ships like this with their own support fleet, I've been thinking it would be neat to have docking ports. Like maybe on the dorsal spine or just underneath the back of the nacelle strut platform. Like maybe you could fit two Defiant class escorts under there and the Interceptor would go up top. One thing that always bugged me about the Galaxy was the lack of warp drive for the separated saucer section. In the technical manual it says something about being able to modify the impulse engines to achieve warp velocity... But I really don't see how that would be feasible. Now I'm not sure if this would work with the established rules, but could the escort vessels somehow latch to the saucer to basically carry it along at warp?

When Paramount tried to film Voyager on a planet surface using the practical model, it WAS nose heavy, and would not stand on it's own. If you go back and look at that episode, you'll notice that the back of the ship always seems to be hidden behind an outcropping of rock. That was no accident, as the rock was there to hide the hand holding the back of the model down!

I had a similar idea, but was thinking about a bigger version of the Intrepid class(may not need warp nacelles to move because of the larger version)! Geared towards space battles! Even large holodecks for training security for offensive maneuvers, for retaking Starfleet starships from attacking boarding parties! 4 impulse engine array, for greater sub-warp acceleration & speed! With additional phaser arrays on either side of the deflector array,! With 2 tactical control stations each controlling 1/2 of the ship's weapons (port & starboard)! Quantum torpedo launchers(2 forward, & 2 aft)! The ship's hull is crafted from armor! I'd add more to this, but I know very little about Starfleet weapons that are available, after Voyager's return to the Alpha quadrant, & Earth! However, extra storage bays were added to provide the crew supplies for longer periods of time in deep space! Also, designed as an anti-borg vessel! Well that's my limited take on the Interceptor class!

I think I come up with a good idea...and then I see it was basically done 4yrs ago 😐 I came up with an idea and rough design for what I call the Venture-Class. Very similar to the Interceptor in terms of usage, but it would trade speed and firepower for more versatility and defense. The Venture would be a workhorse ship for war or peace, with modular pods for weapons or science bays or medical facilities. It would kinda look like a giant Delta Flyer crossed with a real world watercraft. It would look a bit clam-like, with the nacelles and deflector blended into a smooth hull. No ablative armor, but the shields, structural integrity fields and thick hull would be also be somewhat blended together, so that damage would be dispersed over the largest possible area. Alas, it seems like the Interceptor more or less already fills my imaged role 😜
