Great episode on this versatile craft! I agree they look better with the sensor pod on top and some of the agility they showed in battle against the Maquis and the Jem Ha'dar. All Danube (dan-oob) runabouts were to be named after Earth rivers, as the Danube is one. The Orinoco was assigned to replace the lost Yangtzee Kiang and the Rubicon was apparently named by Sisko on its arrival at DS9.

Another nice one, guys. I always wondered about the details of these things. That center replaceable module is very cool. I think if I were the designer,though, I would have buried the warp core inside, as it is very vulnerable to enemy attack on the top. Very nice episode!
@markplott48209 жыл бұрын
+Scott Darby the reasons are that the internal space was needed for cargo and or multimission . however, that problem is solved by armouring it with abalative plates and strong shields. that said, your concept of a buried warp core would work for a dedicated fighter / corvette variant . where the center modjule would be replaced by weapons storage for ground assault. but not for troops due to radiation.

Great dicussion guys. The Runabout is my favorite shuttle / small ship in Star Trek. And i agree with you. It is a real shame that the aft section set from TNG was never used in DS9. It would have given the audience a better impression of the actual size of this ship. They filmed all scenes in the rather cramped cockpit set of which many would have also worked in the aft section. In Universe i also imagine the Runabout as some kind of mid range personell transport used for travel distances of 2 - 3 days, where a regular shuttle is to small and the transport via proper starship a waste of resources and manpower.

Its a writing device. Surprise the enemy. Like when Picard ordered all power at the first encounter of the Borg. That wasn't going to happen again. Why didn't they do this again when it worked here? To keep each episode fresh. I do love the RUNABOUT.

I find it strange that with all the technological developments in the 7 years that Deep Space Nine takes place that the Danube-Class didn't seem to receive any upgrades. The Voyager crew managed to build the Delta Flyer from scratch, and it could reach at least Warp 6. The Bio-Neural Gel Packs were also fitted into Voyager by the time it was docked at Deep Space Nine waiting on Tom Paris & Lt. Stadi's shuttle. We also know that Voyager got Type 6 Photon Torpedoes, which were also new and in place by the time they left DS9, better than the Type 5 Torpedoes. Captain Janeway tells this to Chackotay (sp) when they are attacking Dreadnought in the episode of the same name. The only upgrade I can think of the DS9 crew using on the Runabouts was I think originally the writers said there was no way the Runabout could transport more than 2 people at one time, although numerous times after that we see many more people than that beam up at once. In the episode where Bashir, Garak, Worf, and Martok escape the Dominion prison, it beams up all 4 of them plus some of the other prisoners they shared the cell with (I remember a Romulan Female) so that would be at least 5 at once, right?

Anti-deuterium is an interesting choice as it could not be magnetically contained. Had they chose anti-carbon, it could be contained by diamagnetism, had they chosen a conductor such as anti-aluminium then they could contain it with Eddy currents. Of course producing anti-matter in atoms even deuterium would be incredibly advanced technology that we can't even conceive of today. Good thing it's Star Trek where fictitious force fields unknown to us could be used.

As far as the mission specific posts go, we wouldn't have even needed to see the sets. (keeping min mind storage) ~The Rio Grande is assigned pods A, B, C, D ~The Gange is assigned A, B, E, F ~The Yangtzee Kiang is assigned A, C, G, H ~When a Runabount is selected for a mission, the order is given to attach the appropriate mission pod. We could also get lines saying they wished they had another pod.

I always had the same feeling about the Runabouts. They are definitely not a Starship but they aren't really a shuttle. I ended up treating them as I guess you were supposed to. They bridge the cap between Starships and shuttles. Basically so you don't need to use the resources of a starship but a shuttle just won't cut it.
@SnowmanTF27 жыл бұрын
I had not realized it only did warp 5, given how many regular shuttlecraft can do that it seems way too low, especially since it it is intended for much longer travel. Kinda feels like at least warp 7 or 8 should be the minimum given how much more significant engine it seems to have verses them. As far as redressing the aft portion, it looks like that ended up the crew quarters for the defiant with the table part cut off and some of the components may have been reworked for quarters of lower ranks of NX Enterprise crew.

Back when DS9 aired , I came up with a modified concept of a Oahu class runabout . its similar to the Danube class but with a bigger roomier cockpit ( up to 8 seated ) and with a 4 person transporter in the next room. force fields for port and starboard doors. the Habitation modjeule is moved to the center of the ship, with 8 bunk beds , a combination Head and sonic shower, and a one tray replacator. this frees up the aft section to carry swappable multimission modjueles . they and either be droped off on a planet, like a remote habitat, a medical station, a cargo container or many configureations . or can be left without one mounted , so that one can be picked up, similar to a Skycrane helicopter. my original sketches are somewhere in storage along with my other TREK designs.

Yeah ST's PHASERs seem to have the power to carve continents through thick atmospheres but are like pop guns in space sometimes. Other times they slice and dice things for no reason. They are Directed Energy Plot Devices. Torpedoes seem to have a more understandable power curve of Photon/Plasma > Quantum > Transphasic with Tri-Cobalt being dial-a-yield sub-space weapons that rend and rip at space to destroy things. It was stated in ST Destiny Synthesis that Tricobalt weapons are governed in use by the Khitomer Accords and requires the command staff to be unified on its use since apparently its destructive power is so high. Wonders never cease at how starfleet didn't pursue these things as anti-borg weapons far far earlier. Oddly enough Torpedoes seem to fluctuate between being self guided and needing ship telemetry to function. *shrugs*

+surplusgavids I thought in the episode "The Jem'Hadar" Jake Sisko asks the computer auto-pilot to take them back to The Wormhole at Warp 8, and the computer doesn't say it can't reach that speed, just that since he deactivated auto-pilot it couldn't comply. As to Torpedoes, I think they were under the main part of the Runabout with up to 4 full-size Torpedoes. I think the DS9 Tech Manual says the mission modules can be used to carry additional torpedoes, which the Captain of The USS Odyssey asks to be done by Chief O'Brian who says he'd already started the upgrades.

@@tonyutter Yeah, you're right the Type 6 shuttle crafts were the first to have transporters, I had to do some searching and it'll be awhile before I get to see that episode for free lol, locally we're up to S3E8 I guess since they used it more on DS9 gave me the assumption that's when they were installed cause that was a "WTF?" moment in Discovery when Burnham & Spock used it on Talos IV... I wuz like waiiiitttt a minute???
