I know a lot of TOS fans hate the Galaxy-class, but the 1701-D was *my* Enterprise. I grew up watching the ship and its crew and when it was finally destroyed in Generations it was like losing an old friend.

This was the ship which you could call "home". People scoff at the "hotel"-look, but really the Federation is about peaceful first contact. You would want your interior to look inviting when you have diplomats over. Besides, Starfleet has a lot of psychological understanding (why the computer has a female voice). Imagine being stuck in a murky, metal environment for years on end without family.

A galaxy build to military standards had to be one seriously dangerous ship. I saw a figure for a displacement of 6 million tons. The losses to the liberty ship fleet of a million tons was considered threatening. A new Galaxy (W) arriving at DS9 represented a serious resupply of resources. I suspect a single "Galaxy Wing" was the equivalent of a WW2 task force with support ships.

I've been psyched for this episode forever, and it didn't disappoint. I also like that you cited your sources for this series of episodes, which is a nice touch. I can't wait to see your take on the little known parts of the ship. As much as we have seen in the 7 seasons (or series, if you're Samuel) there's so many parts of the ship that were never touched upon. I still remember looking at the main shuttlebay on my blueprints... it's soooo big! Regarding the third torpedo launcher- it never made sense to me that the saucer would be limited to phasers only when separated. I didn't know that Probert wanted it on the model though, that makes me feel better about it. It's in the technical manual, on the blueprints, and the designer wanted it there. That's canon enough for me.

Could captain Keogh be operating from the USS Odyssey battle bridge as this is a combat situation? I know Picard rarely used it and only when the ship separated but another captain, another style of command? The destruction of the Odyssey certainly had the desired shock factor. I prefer to think of each Galaxy class ship as having slightly different bridge configurations akin to the alternate reality Enterprises seen in TNG Parallels episode by Worf.

@Trekyards According to Memory Beta, the USS Odyssey was the fourth of the first Six Galaxy Class Starships built, as it is mentioned to be the possible command of Captain Picard in 2363 and was slated for launch in 2364, instead Picard went to the D because the original choice of the D's captain retired. (Information is from the TNG Novel, the Buried Age. Also, it's YamAto not YamOto. Side note, the Captain that retired is the Captain of the D in the Episode where Picard experiences a timeline where he doesn't fight the Nausicaans.)

It's a good ship. The bad thing is, for me, whenever I go into a battle that has other Federation/Allied ships (AI), I tend to be one of the strongest ships, so I tend to get locked on quite easily. I have to die at least once in massive battles so I don't have to worry about be slaughtered every 30 seconds. And not going straight in thick of it. After I die once, they don't always mass lock onto me. For me right now in STO, the Envoy-Class variant is my current ship (just started a little before 2017). NCC-2016-D USS Astraea.

Great video, it's a delight to watch. Quick question though: what are your sources about the Galaxy-class being upgraded during he Dominion War, including its performance during the war etc? I agree, it's almost likely that they were upgraded to reflect the threat of the Dominion ships. And yet, with the exception of added phaser banks on the warp nacelles (USS Venture), and both primary and secondary impulse engines being active in battles, there's very little to confirm there indeed was a refit or upgrade of the Galaxy-class ship. Afterall, wasn't the GC ships' ability to resist Jem Hadar energy weapons a fleet-wide development rather than something specific to that class of ship? Thanks

Great Video! I must admit, the Galaxy Class was always my least favorite Hero/Flag ship design.... until today that is, now it's 4th, (7th Excelsior, 6th Defiant, 5th Sovereign, 4th Galaxy, 3rd Constitution Refit, 2nd Constitution, 1st NX) thanks for expanding my appreciation for this class of ship, i must admit i was surprised at the low number of this class produced, i had thought it was like the Constitution class of it era, the main fleet production focus along with Nebula and other variants and sub-variants using Modular hull components from the Galaxy class spaceframe design, thank you for clearing that up along with many other things. also... who in the right mind would thumbs down this Episode? it's madness i say! :)
@shawn27808 жыл бұрын
+Robert monroe Some people (and it's always the same people, I have no doubt) just Thumbs Down everything for the sole purpose of doing so. It's probably a spy. The Galaxy is certainly the ship of it's era, but as with modern day ships, it's design period was long and drawn out probably at great expense. By the time they were ready to start building them out they already scaled down the number ordered (again as with modern day). Given the size and power of the ship and the general political stability of the galaxy, how many do you really need?
@farragut798 жыл бұрын
I loved the show. First time commenter, however, the Galaxy was not designed during an era of peace for the Federation. The 2340s to 2350s held a number of conflicts including the Cardassians, Talarians, Tholians, Tzenkethi, and a what appears to be a new cold war with the Klingons. In the early 2360s, the Federation was still at war with the Cardassians until the peace treaty in 2367.
@shawn27808 жыл бұрын
+Eldarion H I think the Galaxy class was as much of a ship designed for a time of peace as it was a ship designed for the HOPE of peace. Certainly in the 2350s and onward ships were designed with more of a combat role in mind like the Akira and Steamrunner, and of course the Defiant much later... but the primary goal of the Federation and by extension Starfleet has always been peace and exploration and no starship exemplifies this more than the Galaxy class.
@farragut798 жыл бұрын
+Shawn McDonald From what we have seen, Starfleet is primarily the Federation's defensive arm. I have always been of the opinion that the Galaxy was originally designed as a flagships in terms of actually being command ships for those conflicts, but they were heavily converted to be more technological demonstrators and promoters of Hope and Peace, So somewhat similar to your comment. However, the Enterprise did become a flagship in the truest militarily of terms leading many Federation fleet actions in TNG's run such as in Chain of Command, Descent, and Redemption.
@shawn27808 жыл бұрын
Eldarion H Captain Picard would tell you that Starfleet's primary mission is one of peace... and exploration. But I don't disagree with you either. One of the fascinating aspects of Star Trek is this dichotomy. Gene Roddenberry always resisted the thought that Starfleet was a military. His primary objection to ST:6 is that it was 'too militaristic'. Same thing for his opposition to FASA, it focused too much on the military aspects of Star Trek. On the other hand, some of the best Trek has been built around conflict and war. In universe, I can see the designers of the Galaxy class ship being in the 'Roddenberry' peace camp. They won the argument, which is why it has the asthetic that it does. I don't think the original design was anything approaching a warship at all. With all the peace and love and koombaya on one side of the table though you have people who represent the combat aspect of Starfleet who (correctly) counter that space is a dangerous place, and the ship needs to have unclassed weapons the ability to coordinate fleet battles as a flagship, and the general ability to kick ass. This faction, if you will, started to win their argument during the Cardassian conflict and certainly after Wolf 359... But I don't think the Galaxy was never really considered a true battleship until the Dominion war when they picked up the incomplete spaceframes as bare bones skeleton crew warships. I would have liked to see the inside of one of these. I'm picturing bare metal and entire empty sections converted to things like Torpedo storage. Now that would have been awesome...
@farragut798 жыл бұрын
+Shawn McDonald Well, that's early TNG Picard, by NEM, he considered being a battlefield commander one of his accomplishments. Would I call the early Galaxy, a battleship? Nah, It was more of a ship surrounded by escorts with Admirals dictating orders from the main bridge, while the ship's command crew was in the battle bridge. Warships would not tend to be having a skeleton crew especially in times of conflict, however, the sciences and civilian aspects of the ship would be greatly lessened.
@shawn27808 жыл бұрын
I think you're right, but I never liked Action Hero Picard. I'm more of a TNG purist though. What I meant with the skeleton crew statement was that with the Dominion war Galaxy class ships, those science and civilian aspects of the ships literally didn't exist. The only built the ships enough to be spaceworthy and combat ready. The idea is that they had enough 'guts' to fly and fight, but large sections of the ships were just simply empty. Of course this enhanced their combat capabilities greatly due to the decreased mass and the decreased power grid load as said ... and they probably could have been crewed by a couple hundred people or even less. Those ships, specifically, I would call Battleships. They were, however, completed after the war and converted back to 'civillian' spec if you will- no doubt. Edit- I said increased power load, I meant decreased

It would have been fascinating if one of the Galaxy class ships had been pulled over to the Delta quadrant, being an intended extended-duration exploration vessel and well-suited for a very long range mission, instead of an Intrepid class ships, as it was done for the Voyager series. The size and power, and flexibility of a Galaxy class ship would have made some of the encounters far different than what Voyager with Captain Janeway had to deal with, while over in the Delta quadrant. Very interesting to contemplate.
@thribs8 жыл бұрын
The D couldn't land which would had made certain repairs hard to do.
@shawn27808 жыл бұрын
+Kevin Westrom I think that placing an ill-equipped ship in that situation was a smart idea conceptually. I agree with you though. Not only would it have made the encounters different, but the ship is so self-sufficient that it probably have successfully made the trip using only warp and not be any worse for wear. Mind you it would have taken a lot longer since she's quite a bit slower....
@kevinwestrom8 жыл бұрын
+Robert Hayes Agreed, that while it would not have been able to land to make repairs, it would have had more than enough other capabilities to be able to make any necessary repairs on itself while in orbit of any planet, or in deep space if necessary.
@kevinwestrom8 жыл бұрын
+Shawn McDonald I agree, that to place a ship that was not meant for an extremely long duration mission, to have to do it out of necessity, makes for a more interesting and compelling main story focus instead of if it had been a ship designed to excel in such circumstances; While the Galaxy-class vessels are appreciably slower than an Intrepid-class ship, to have to deal with distances on the scale of 70,000 LY, the speed differences become irrelevant considering the extremely vast distance from the delta quadrant back to the alpha quadrant. The Voyager had to get assistance numerous times from very powerful beings like the relatively-old Kes, being able to throw Voyager a good distance, the Slingshot device able to push Voyager 20,000 LY in a few moments,.. the Subspace corridors of the Vaadwar/Turrei,... etc. Since the Voyager still needed the help of situations of the sort, and finally the Borg slip stream corridor/hub and nexus to get the rest of the way from where they finally managed to get to by standard means before the final episode, and then utilize that to get the rest of the way back home in that episode. As a potential generational ship, having the families on board, all the extra firepower, extra shuttles, and more, it could have faced off against the Kaazon far more effectively. It also could have dealt with very differently the Devore, and races of the sort. How a ship like Picard might have performed/reacted against the Species 8472, or some other races that Janeway did, would have been fascinating.

ok y'all my first time here so go easy lol. anyway when it comes to the Galaxy class inreally do like it. to me it is such a regal ship. it's large, and just with that it commands respect and honor. I feel that as far as ships of it's time that it has to be the. king of the ships, and they made the absolute right for the flagship of the fleet. if I had the choice of ships including new sto ships I would have to say that this one is at the top 3 ships that are my favorite, and if given the opportunity I would have to jump at the chance to command a Galaxy class ship.

Anyways as usual, just throwing out an idea. Keep up the good work! :)

Ohmygodohmygodohmygod it's happening! BEAUTIFUL renders right of the bat. Edit: ah, the hight-issue. I've seen her hight labeled as everything from 99 to 200 meters. My own calculations measure a hight of somewhere between 135 and 145 meters, dependings majorly on the depiction used for the measurements. I actually got the chance to ask Mr. Probert in the comments of the Probert-Ambassador Class about this; he said he doesn't know either but he gave me some numbers on deck size and those fit pretty nicely with my own findings. The 200 meter hight is most definitely horribly, terribly wrong; i don't know where it comes from and who's perpetuating it; my best guess would be that it's some form of a conversion error from feet to meters.

I find it amusing "Put your family in danger" saftey is a myth. How did the various Paleolithic humans survive by keeping their families safe? They developed the skills and weapons to kill the lion, tiger, bear, or wolf before it killed anyone. The kids learned like a lot of helpers, apprentices, and journeymen have always learned too. "A fearless understanding of the risks, to boldly go where none have gone before." The ship would be home and the kids would grow up much like small town humans have always grown up. Some pull a Wesley and grow beyond the town, others do not.
