I had an FAL, I never had more magazine issues with any other gun. You're spot on with that. Not a fan of a lot of other battle rifle platforms. I've been through several. I currently only own one battle rifle, that's a Zastava M77 .308 AK. It's a bad ass gun, but it's heavy. I live in the mountains, a little over 5,500 feet above sea level. With a full load out, a battle rifle ends up being between 25% to a third more weight, with a third less ammo. You may not notice the weight so much on a flat range, but the second you start rucking in the mountains you notice it. I'm in good shape, PT 5 times a week minimum with daily hikes. It still would not be my go to rifle, and I know I'm in better shape than 90+% of the population.

Great talking points Trench. When it comes to the idea of running a battle rifle, I do have a few thoughts. In some regions, such as agricultural areas (where I'm originally from), most of the locals own what the DNR and others refer to as "High Powered Rifles". One of the most common cartridges in areas like that is .308, and as a result, AR10's are reasonably common. Agricultural areas are typically very open, with not much cover, save for terraces, creeks, ocassional wooded patches, ponds for livestock, and the increased ranges offered by a battle rifle such as an AR10 are appealing. Hunting rounds can be fired through those rifles without very much fine tuning(if any, depending on the rifle) and several of them also can fire 7.62 NATO safely, in addition to .308 Win. With the upcoming transition for the Military, there is also a lot of modern surplus M80 ball available, so a battle rifle is one tool that I do have in the box, and while it is expensive to train with, I still do. Just so happens, mine doesn't mind steel cased ammo. But, that same can not be said of all rifles. Keep the good content coming! Edit: I also have to add, that low round count drills are helpful when training on a budget. I commonly run 5 round magazines to get that reloading practice in. 5 of 5 rounds into a target 4 times in a row is the same as 20 rounds in one mag. Load up a full kit, weigh it on a scale, write down the numbers, train with the same weight in the gym. Load up your kit or a weighted training vest and a pack, go hiking.

I started with battle rifles because California gun laws. M1A's werent neutered besides the 10 round magazines. I traded out my Sig 716i bevause of most of the reasons you addressed. Heavy, couldnt afford the ammo to train with it enough to actually get good and i wasnt a good enough marksman to justify it. My PT at this time is the best its ever been. Im 6'3 & 200lbs and its still heavy. I might try it again one day as my environment is extremely vast and wide open. But for now my 5.56 carbine is a better option for my abilities.

FAL owner here. I fell in love with that rifle, when I began reading the history of Southern Africa (ifykyk), during the Cold War and something about it spoke to me. I then saw one for sale locally and for a steal of a deal, so I bought it. You're right on the magazines and gas block settings for the type of ammo, and that came as a shock to me and then my journey with this platform began. Is it the biggest hunk of shit that I own? Yes. Do I still love it dearly and refuse to get rid of it? Yes.

Both have medium power variable scopes and the DD has a piggyback red dot. I mostly got them for fun and hunting so I can’t say i was tricked. Only role in SHTF I could see them filing would be in static defense where weight doesn’t matter (ex: manning road block into a neighborhood).

Yeah they don't make alot of sense if you're the side that's on foot and having to take the fight to the enemy. If your the "enemy" and don't have to do such thing you can afford to exist in the 30 cal imo. If youre not humping it around you have no real reason not to have the ability to out reach the aggressors, while also having a little side benefit of even being able to stop some vehicles etc too. So yeah I say they have thier uses for sure. I don't plan to be kicking doors as taking the fight to anyone, and if I can keep the enemy pinned down out past thier ability to fight back effectively I'll do it. So I think the debate should lean to if you're attacking or defending firstly. Then let that dictate the rest?

AR10s have a place. Ive got two in my collection currently. One 20" in .308 Win, and one 26" in .243 Winchester. Are they heavy? Hell yes they're heavy. But you should look at the ballistic data on a 115 gr DTAC moving at 3k fps. If I had to choose a semi auto sniper system, it would 100% be that gun (im resizing .308 brass and hand loading precise charges within 2 100ths of a grain in precision.) The .308 runs 155 grain HPBTs loaded to around 2750 fps. They hit harder, have less drop, and are pushed off target less than windage by a 5.56. In general, they're not the weapons I'd choose to take with me on a foot patrol... but if you're expecting contact with light armor, vehicles or cover... or you're settings up semi-static firing positions in two man teams... definitely. Two AR10s running the same scope with a grid reticle and the same ammo loading turns one shooter and one spotter into two shooters. Spotter observes splash on a first round miss, adjusts his own POA to the spot on the grid where the splash occurs and calls correction while returning fire. Now you have 40 followup rounds (20+1 x 2) with a high precision potential and a dead aim moving down range.

I have a SOCOM 16 and M1A Scout Squad. Maybe not as practical for battle, but they have both killed Hogs down here in Florida whwn I go hunting. My GTW rifle is a SIG M400 AR15, and practically I think an AR15 is the best GTW rifle for the normal person, but the M1A is a good gun and I wouldn't turn someone away who had one. I so have a Blue Force Gear for my M1As, just in case. An AR15 can be built to shoot 600-900 yards, and serve as the DMR, while having ammo capability with the rest of the team, etc.

Something I’ve noticed that’s prevalent in these kinds of communities is the notion that becuase these guns use a full power round -they are therefore more accurate than 5.56 AR15 or 7.62 AK. They absolutely are not. Maybe an AR10 built with quality parts but FALs ? No sir. Besides that having heavier guns and having more perceived recoil and less ability to carry ammo, you’re really really outclassed by the average Joe Schmoe with an AR.

My thought process was always 5.56 for semi-rifles, 308 or 30-06 with a bolt gun, and a 9mm sidearm. I know you can build "sniper" semi-auto builds, but the bang for the buck is not there for me. Especially when it comes to part transfers between the different manufacturers.

All you really need is a good radio, a rifle and 6-7 mags on your person with 3-5 more in your pack. Keep an IFAK on you, food, water and a few basic tools. If you're on foot and you're outside of your home or not actively seeking out a fight (you shouldn't be, save for a red dawn scenario) you don't need plates or a ballistic helmet. They'll just slow you down. Get a good bump helmet or other lightweight NOD mounting option if you want to run night vision. The golden rule of moving on foot is ounces make pounds, and pounds make pain. Get out and keep moving man. Don't go past what your heart can handle, obviously, but shedding sweat now means you'll lose less blood later.

One of the biggest issues with the FAL is the vast majority of rifles in country are kit builds made by questionable companies and many times on shit receivers, I include DSA as being shit for at least the last 12 years. Many magazine issues are related to DSA manufactured magazines, you only want to use NATO surplus magazines. I wouldn't advise anyone to get an FAL in 2023 outside of collecting, to get a good one you will be in pretty close to what you could get an LMT AR 10 or for just a little more a SCAR. The FAL does make a nice home defense weapon the extra weight doesn't matter when you are only going across the living room and when done up in Rhodesian camo it just screams "Get off my fucking lawn!"

I agree mostly however geography is also a consideration. If you live on the great plains, where tree lines are thousands of yards apart or nonexistent you may want more reach. Some Fudd with his pappy's deer rifle may smoke dudes with ARs from outside there effective range. There are good reasons the military is toying with the x5 idea. Do I think the x5 is a better option? Provided the platform is solid sometimes it would be. That would depend on the geography the fight takes place on.

M1A SOCOM 16 CQB had been my dream rifle since I was like 10 years old and I finally bought one 14 years later. I love it so much that I simply ignore the flaws it has, and how much money I’ve sunk into it just in mags, ammo, and an optic + sadlak mount. It fits my needs as a property defense gun for where I live (way out of city limits on 38 acres of land in the PNW and virtually no neighbors). But if I have to be mobile and fast, yeah I’m grabbing my lightweight AR.

I’m not a big fan of the battle rifle concept personally- though I understand the argument, and it has merit. It just seems like the added weight and decreased ammo capacity isn’t worth it. Especially if you are moving long distances. To me it seems like a person would be best served using .308 (or others) in a rifle with a high power scope, and shooting ranges 150+ yards or greater consistently. Like a recon or spotter role. 🤔

Great video. I think one thing people should note about the battle rifle is that you need to look at how it was implemented and the gear people were wearing. Most of the people that rock the battle rifle were not wearing body armor. They were wearing chest rigs. People carrying 308 calibers or the nato alternative were carrying very light loads in most instances. And most of us here probably watching this channel are in the average percentile of fitness. Yes your grandfather who had an M1 grand in World War II had a light load and a chest rig and the dudes who used the M14 in Vietnam had a really light flack vest. I think it is safe to say if you are using a battle rifle in an instance of CQB. You have not thought out or prepped properly because the best use case for this weapon system is long distance engagements that are out of the reach of intermediate cartridges.

I have my own opinions, but this is your channel so the comments should be for questions Instead of what is best on assaults and long hikes, what many average citizens want to know is: If you have armed IRS (or pick the alphabet agency of your choice trying to turn the constitution into bathroom wipes) agents behind cars in front of your house (yes, assume it already escalated and the agents saw your stars and bars flag bumper sticker and assumed you were a terrorist or something - this is what they are being trained to see, you see), are you picking up the AR10 or AR15? Let's assume your neighbors do not have your back- pretty good assumption for most. And let's assume at this point that your realistic goal is not to survive (we know what happens in jail- just ask the jan6ers), but to take as many agents with you before they send in the flash grenades with SWAT on your way off planet earth. Another question: Curious why you disparaged the vortex strike eagle?

Psa Ks47 gen 2 has been my main gpr. Been putting 60-200ish rounds down range every month for about the last yr. Running 1-6 budget ebay lpvo. Only notable issue I've had was the plastic on the buffer broke about half of it off. Couldn't even tell other than n odd rattle inside the buffer.

I picked up an M1 Garand last year. I walked into a pawnshop with too much money and walked out with the M1. With my purchase, i grabbed 5 bandoleers of m2 ball; a bayonet (shorty) and a steel pot with the vietnam era camo covering. It's not my first choice for a gun fight, But the LARP is real my dudes. 🐸

Sage EBR with M1A socom 16 and my Deawoo DR200. And where I live in the woods...not getting anything over 200 yards...most likely my shot would be under 100 yards which is why I went with the M1A and not a bolt action.

Very nice; the proposition of stretching out in range is alluring with 308 etc., but the weight issues you highlighted are far more relevant than a lot of others like to believe (as you noted). Any thoughts on the viability of stretching a 556 out to 700-800 yds to maintain the standoff potential while keeping the weight and load savings?

I have a Tavor 7. Its a great rifle but, the weaklings cannot handle it. Weight balance is fantastic even with a suppressor. LPVO 1-8x is perfect. The PMAGs never fail. It only had a few light primer strikes on shitty surplus ammo from 1977 but it stopped after the first 100-200 rounds. i agree, weight and low ammo capacity are the significant downsides. I would much rather run an AK-74 variant. but if the squad needs a DMR guy its perfect. Keep up the great videos!!
