TRENDING Beginner Woodworking project that SELLS - ONE BOARD BUILD (almost)

Hello fellow woodworkers or aspiring beginner woodworkers! In this video I'm going to show you how I built an easy woodworking project that is trending right now. I researched the interwebs looking for easy woodworking projects that are low cost and beginner friendly and I found the prefect project. At the same time I discovered that this woodworking project is something I didn't know I needed until I saw it. Its a narrow side table!! its a super simple new take on an already established piece of furniture. What I like about it is it serves the same purpose but it takes up less space so its perfect if you have a small living room like me!! It was almost a one board build but I decided to add a new feature to mine so I needed a small piece if scrap wood!

Hi there. Old timer, woodworker here. Just a comment on your dowel drilling, for the top. That red & black Jointmaster that you were showing , actually drills perfectly in the middle of the wood’s edge. You were sliding it across the wood edge, but actually upside down. That’s what those four “ legs” are for on the other side of the Jointmaster. Put the Jointmaster on the wood edge, with those pins/ legs facing down. Now just twist the device till opposing pins lock onto the wood. PERFECTLY in the middle😊 Other than that, I enjoyed your humour. Many guys have forgotten WHY we started woodworking and come across SO serious, on their videos. It’s therapeutical, but also just relaxing and having FUN. Ps. Ya know at first, I was thinking "why would you do that? Why wouldnt you just do this? That's going to look horrible" etc. Then you asked how maybe you could have improved because we are all learning, and you mentioned it being better than ikea - and I realized I was looking at it all wrong. You are 100% right. This is a fantastic, easy, inexpensive project that looks great at the end. Especially for not having any of those big tools! I'm going to build one just like it, actually (if I can find my tape measure). The only advice I can give is to orient the cup of the board so that the gap is in the middle instead of the edges. It's easier to clamp out a middle gap than an edge gap. And is more often more invisible in final product due to location. Good job man, love it.

I fully expect and welcome it because I cant get better if I don't know how. That's a lot easier to say than to do when you hear the criticism but its a good thing to strive for anyways. Actually, I am 67 now, and at 14 years ole at my snappy age, I learned to drive in a parked car. And then, one day after getting used to the radio, seat, more radio, mirrors, more radio, checking all my blind spots, more radio….., and then, one day I got brave, and I backed up out of the “parkway” ( can’t call it a driveway as it was in the back of the house). Backed up into the lane way, behind all our houses, then forward, then back, a tad narrow, and then, I shot “like a bat out of hell” to the street, 70 meters away. Looked for suspicious folks, yup no cops around, and turned right, drove 300 meters, always checking my mirrors for those damn suspicious folks, and then turned right. Drove about 100 meters, turned right again ( this counters all those racing programs that turn left), and drove 300 meters, and turned right, avoiding this thick metal filled with concrete that safe guarded the corner of my neighbours garage. Then immediately turned left, then backed up, listening to the radio, then forward, listen to the radio, then backed up, then forward, ….. and then …… safe! Back in our narrow parkway. Phew, tomorrow, I think I will do two, turns in the lane way, but of course, looking out and avoiding those suspicious folks, that like ruining a fun time. I grew up in Toronto, Canada, and finally was legal to drive at 15.

@@jascogoods Thank you for that, and yes, I love writing/telling stories. Have been all my life. I am not from Canada, but came here at the ripe young age of almost 3, two weeks on a boat to Halifax from Greece. So that der englize was a total pain in my butt, in der schoole (german was easier to learn go figure). I failed englize every year in high school, and repeated it every year in summer school. You can imagine, part of my summers as a wee high school lad sucked, and not the fun type. Well, not so wee, as I was into everything else in school, sports, student council, clubs, etc, standing 5'11" by the time I finished. Oh yeah, englize, my nemesis, as all my other subjects, including learning German where no problem. Yet, would you believe, my memory was so darn good, that a week into the summer schedule, the englize teacher would be mad at me for being there, and yet would pull me onto the front as the assistant teacher. Why do you ask, because I could recite anything I read the previous year and failed at, and every test I took ( I still had to do the finals so the rest of the students would not bitch) I would pass between 97-100% correct. The teachers could not figure out why I was there. Kept trying to tell them, I am Greek, your damn language gives me a pain in the a...., and find it easier the second time around for it to sink in. Mind you, I am the only student the high school librarian looked for in our 15 year reunion, as I was her Hero, in that I read almost every book in that high school library, but that is for another time and story. So, what was I replying to again, oh yeah, doing YT content. I also should state , that I was a member of the photography and art club in high school, and after college I actually worked in the photography field for almost ten years. Yet during that time I would look at still pictures and thought, "hmmm, I wonder how they would look moving", aka shooting a video. Which back in those days, was not an easy or cheap alternative to the bucks I already spent on my Nikons, 4x5, and 2 1/4, plus all the equipment. Though now I am updated, and I do have a Panasonic digital camera, albeit a tad older then the current models, and a DJI 3 Pro drone, and a few other video/photography related things. Just is, not enough time in the day, with all my hobbies, and currently focusing on woodworking and making it a side hustle, as idle minds and hands, lead to forget evil, being m.o.f,.o bored. Though I enjoy the creative process in building and finishing things, not only just in an artistic process. Therefore, I would suck at telling stories and such on YT, with finding time to shoot during what ever I might be doing, and then the countless hours in editing the video. Similar to reading what I just wrote and going back and editing it. Phew, feel like I am back in school, not being paid! 😂Cheers friend.

Nice job. Some advice for all of those that are going to use the soaking wet southern yellow pine from the big box stores. Stack it with stickers and let it dry for a few weeks. Then mill it or have it milled to your final dimensions. You will be more pleased with the result.

Last weekend I made a rack thingy from old skirting boards, for my wife's herb collection. Used a small weedburner to char the grain. Was my first time and the rack looked like it was rescued from a burning building. Wife: ":\" Then I put some bangkirai oil on it and the magic happened: a beautiful deep orange-red glow, dark brown grain, angels singing and wife:" :)" Great channel, Sir. #subscribed

Love the video and your sense of self deprecating humour. Pretty funny for a 'mercan. One tip I've found useful is to put your cut/milled boards into a plastic bag (trash bag) and close (seal with a knot) the end until you are ready to assemble. You get less moisture transfer that way and it reduces the amount of cupping/bowing in your stock until you get to assemble it, especially if you're cutting one day and assembling another. Nothing worse than coming into your workshop the next day and finding all your boards twisted/bowed/cupped. Don't ask me how I know 😀

Love the video. A tip for the cupped board you used for the top. If you place the board with the cupped side up you can squeeze it down with a clamp in the centre of the board. This way if the board splits the crack will be on the bottom of the board and you won't see it. Construction lumber will always twist, cup, or bow if you leave it on the shelf without clamping it down. You could also cut it into rough lengths as soon as you get it home and stack it with a weight on top.

Just subscribed. Side table looks great. When I make anything I usually use cheap timber. At least if it goes wrong it hasn't cost too much, just time. Tip: I always use a riving knife on my table saw. Helps kickback, but to each his own.

You need that Rockler portable drill press that attaches to a handheld drill. Then your holes for the dowels would be perfectly straight and line up first time

The advice I’ve gotten is to use a clear stain on pine first to seal the open grain. Then the color stain will come out more even, if that’s the look you want.

Yes sir, the only problem I have with the pre stain is that it seems to lighten the stain color I use. Its works for helping the blotchiness or consistency but I prefer the deeper shades.

neat little build. i always put the grain so that it will cup toward the inside of my cases and such. you won't have as many gaps like you had in your build that way. if you're looking at the grain from the side, it should look like a smile. the grain lines try to straighten as they dry. that lets you put a singe fastener in the center so the wood can move without splitting. i usually use two fasteners about an inch apart in the center on each side. the grain in your project is all aligned so you don't have to worry about it here, but if you are ever building a top on a cross grain structure it works pretty well. you can also rebate or mortise for where your shelves sit to hold them flat over time as well. more work, but doesn't have to be perfect. when you're working with rough materials like construction lumber, i think that rustic is usually the way to go.

Tried to make sure this observation was not mentioned in these comments so, when you started working with dowels you started with a black and red doweling jig with a handle which you need to read how it is used because you completely missed how it works. This jig also aligns holes along the center and guides a drill bit for square without using additional jigs like the blue center finder. It works the same way using the post of the jig.

Lately I have been using Ebony stain. It is obviously very dark but it comes out beautiful and in some light it gives off a prism. Almost like a puddle of gasoline. I will also torch the wood to really bring out the grain.

As requested, I find the best stain for pine to be one coat of pre-stain followed by one coat of expresso. Expresso is dark, but the pre-stain really softens it. It gives you the lighter walnut-like color, which I've found to be highly desired by customers in my area in Wisconsin. I normally give the pre-stain about 5-7 minutes to soak in before wiping off the excess and apply the expresso. Good luck!

Just a quick FYI try using one of those glue brushes , they are cheap and it keeps your fingers cleaner , very reusable , let dry and peel the glue off.

Looks awesome! Sometimes when I use dowels like you did on the top, I like to use a different color wood, and then go all the way through leaving the dowel visible, then cut it flush. If you did that here and left them unstained it would give a cool contrast and add just a little bit more to the look of the table.

Another option for the doweling that can simplify your life, especially if you don't have the pointy little inserts to mark the matching holes: just clamp your top in place and drill directly down through the top and into the legs, then cut dowel rod to length and glue them in. When stained the end grain of the dowel gets darker and looks nice (my opinion) in the finished piece. Also, rather than doweling the top in place, use counterbores in the top to screw it into the legs (and flatten out the cupped pine) then cover the screw hole counterbores with dowels for a stronger/flatter assembly with that same finished look.

Love it! I had a similar experience with those dowel hole marking pins and I remember saying nearly the exact same thing when it wouldn't line up on the dry fit. It did work out in the end haha

it turned out great! I had a 1x10 that I was finishing up some boxes with and it wasn't cupped at all in the store but 2 days later...the wood was possessed because it was smiling at me. it was almost unusable but with the power of persuasion and about 8 clamps on a 16" board it seem to cooperate lol. Im going to try to wrap the ends with plastic wrap and see if that helps next time.

Yea I'm out in Vegas where its really dry so this happens to me all the time. I'm meticulous when picking out wood and then I cut it and it bows anyways! Usually Its the 1 by material that gets me, I didn't expect the 2 by to go overnight.

Well done! If you don't point out the flaws to anyone else they won't look for them. One piece of advice I can offer you would be to use a separate small container to put your clear finish in. This will prevent you from contaminating the large can of finish with any particles coming off the project. Also you should not wipe the brush on the inside rim of the can. That leaves the drips to congeal there and later fall into the finish. If you are going to dip into the original container it is a good practice to slap the brush on the inside of the can wall to get rid of the excess on the brush. Ask any painter and they will show you this method. Keep building I look forward to your next project!!

You can fill cracks in from warping/cupping the same way you filled in the natural cracks in the grain. Or use whatever to fill in gaps. Just fill it in before you stain, and it's much less noticeable than gaps left unfilled. I prefer carpenters glue myself, but I've heard putty filler sticks are easy too. Easier yet, if you're painting instead of staining, just use regular old drywall spackling, sand, paint.

You asked for suggestions, so here are mine: The top would have been fine with two dowels per side instead of three. Also, you might want to go back and look at how many screws you used. I would say too many. Finally, Titebond 3 is mainly for outdoor use, so you could use Titebond 2 instead, though the price is about the same. I hope that helps. Keep up the good work though. You're fun to watch, and don't mind showing the issues with your build, which is very helpful to newcomers. One question: Did you sticker your lumber and let it sit for at least three or four weeks before using it? That is definitely the way to go, though you may still have some issues with construction lumber.

Thank you so much for the helpful tips, they are appreciated. I did not let the lumber sit. I live in Vegas and get the lumber from a big box store. Typically odd sizes like this have been sitting on the shelves for weeks already and are already really dry because Vegas is really dry. I need to invest in a meter to be sure though.

For the edification of knuckleheads who do not understand rounded edge removal. These are removed to ensure tight lines with mating surfaces (for example see 3:30 time stamp). This facilitates adhesion when using glue, and alignment when using other joinery methods. In addition, tight joints look cleaner. On finished pieces, edges are sometimes chamfered or rounded for handling or to prevent splintering.

For your fence-if you hold the handle up and out a bit as you slide it to the desired measurement, it won't move on you when you lock it down. I got the roller from home depot, I believe it was less that $40. I don't know if there is a cheaper one at harbor freight but this one works good. If you make one I'd love to see the pics. I'm sure it will turn out great.

This is awesome! Simple and quick yet gorgeous! My favorite stain that is on pretty much everything in my room is Minwax's Dark Walnut. Its not far off of your provincial (pruh-vin-chl btw lol), but it just looks so nice. I do use a pre stain on it and cover it with a poly top coat, but it has turned out so nice every time I've used it!

I actually spilled a full can of it on my new clean garage floor and now there's a big brown stain. I always have a hard time with blotchiness when I use it on pine that's why I switched to the provincial. Maybe I should try a pre stain like you did.

@jascogoods oh no! Not the garage floor! Maybe you just have to "spill" a couple more so it all matches lol! Also yes the pre stain worked wonders! I did my desk without it and did have some blotchiness as well, but I've done quite a few shelf like thing since and they've turned out great. I've also noticed when I wipe the excess, I have to wipe pretty hard to get a smoother stain spread. Idk how that compares to other stain brands as I've only used minwax, but it worked well for me. Glad I could possibly help!

I think different kinds of stains have different advantages and disadvantages. Some of the "premium" stains are harder to mess up but the classic stains like minwax seem to be have a wider range of color shades through the wood grain. Like the Dark walnut ranges from lighter browns to dark brown like the color variation of someone with brown eyes. Where the premium stains go on perfect but its more of a flatter brown. if that makes sense, I struggled trying to put that into words. 🤣
