@@EK6O3O Not everyone has room for a 140" screen. You can buy a 100"+ 4k tv for just over £2000, which is cheaper than this setup. Projectors are great but the fact is TV's are getting bigger and cheaper. When I bought my first Projector, a large TV was 65", now that's the norm.

OLED and LCD screens all suffer from too many drawbacks for me. Mainly banding and DSE, which seems to have gotten worse over the years. Probably due to QC and them being a mass market product where many people won’t even notice or care. DLP with RGB lasers are pretty much the cleanest image you can get right now.

Stop painting the room in light colours. There is a reason commercial cinemas have dark if not black walls and ceilings. It stops visible light from bouncing back to the screen and lifting the black level.

THIS. I have a little improvised home cinema and recently painted walls and ceiling dark and bought simple cheap blankets to cover the big tv and its a difference like day and night. Even got some cheap black blankets to put over the big tv screen and that glare white closet to avoid reflections. Now when its dark it is DARK and you only see the screen. Otherwise the projected image would light up the entire room and ruin the experience its ment to create.

@johnperry9725

Information in this video is wrong unfortunately. ALR screens do not give you a brighter image, they actually have the opposite effect. They reject light from above (ceiling lights usually) and are innately gray to help with the black levels in a moderately lit room. If you are in a moderately dark room you should use a neutral gain screen as it will increase the lifespan of your projector since you can use a lower brightness setting. In extremely dark rooms or when using a LED projector you should use a higher gain screen. ALR screens in a dark environment will have less performance than a standard projector screen. the contrast on these low gain screens will be worse in such a situation as compared to a standard screen. The viewing angles will be slightly be worse. Color accuracy will be slightly worse as well. ALR screens are useful in the circumstance they were made for, however they are not a replacement for standard white screens which perform better in darker rooms and theaters. The white screen in your video is made from cloth and from the looks of it polyester based, of course it will not look good as compared to a screen that cost anywhere from 5-10 times to make.

Simply put this grey screen sends back less light BUT 100% of that signal is polarised that makes image so vivid and properly coloured. We are only loosing reflected distorted light that wasn't straight and was introducing blurring. Less is more 💥

Gain is meaningless when projecting images. What's important is reflected light into a specific viewing angle. Ambient light rejection is the flip side of incident light reflection. Good matte white is not cheap It's a medicre projection surface for a seated audience because it scatters more than 90% of the incident light outside the viewing area. Glass beaded surface screens were reflective and returned light very close to the path of incidence, making them more efficient but with a limited viewing angle. ALR is a compromise between these two. Examples of more affordable ALR are SCREENPRO fixed frame 92" T Prism UST $800 aliexpress SCREENPRO100" Motorized Floor Self-Rising 8K ALR Screen ~$1100

I"m watching your video on my Benq Tk800 (That still has a great picture) on a 115" fixed white matt screeen. I sometimes want to buy a laser projector. But, The price of an ALR screen scares me. To tell you the truth I'm not sure that the defference in picture quality between the ALR vs white matt warrants the price difference. What I might do is try a laser projector on my white matte screen before i spend a fortune on a ALR screen. Thanks for the vedio.

Thanks for your comment! The price is definitely excessively more expensive for an ALR, which I agree isn't warranted, especially if you only watch content in the dark. Try a laser on your white screen and see what you think. ALR is recommended if you plan to watch a lot during daylight tbh.

Then I realized short throw projectors are way more attected by any waves in the screen. Yikes. Well, i definitely learned something today. Also, i never knew there were floor mounted projectors screens. Combining the short throw projector and floor mounted screen into one box base is awesome! Great video

Yeah... those prices are beyond outrageous even for the most basic UST ALR screen. Totally not worth using a projector as a day time TV IMO. if you're gna spend that much on a screen for your projector i'd just get a 4k 98 inch mini led qled, much better picture quality, much brighter too. cheaper once you factor in the price of a good 4k laser projector, the only good use case for a projector is if you want a 150 inch screen, but for most homes 98 inch is too big anyway.

If i place myself 60-80cm to the left or right from the center, i will loose all the advantage! But from the very center it's so powerful, that i can easily watch movies outdoor on a sunny day with a simple 3.000 lumen Epson. No joke! But as i wrote it's only good for 1-2 people. So what's the next step in price and increased viewing angle (at least 30-40 degree) which is still affordable, not so expensive like this Vividstorm screen? thanks

Certainly far more than a quality projector and screen but until they can guarantee it looks exactly as bright as a TV in full daylight the jury's out. To be pedantic, that's a CLR screen, it rejects light from the ceiling/above. An ALR screen rejects light from everywhere except the projector. ALR for UST projectors are few, but the Formovie fresnel screen is actually ALR. ALR screens also exist for normal projectors and are beneficial, but they're a little less effective since they can't reject light from above. CLR screens that aren't motorized can be had for $450 or so, Wemax makes affordable ones that aren't as good as the best, but vastly better than a matte white.

Possibly - but it would have to be a 4K native Triple Laser UST projector with a very high brightness level, but even then, it would be hard to find one thats suitable for outdoor conditions, because you risk getting dust and debris go into the projector, so probably won't be recommended. In direct sunlight (with what ever little we get in the UK), it could be hard to see still, especially from a distance.

I believe the window behind the white screen is what's causing the distortion. The pressure cause the window isn't completely sealed is slightly moving the fabric, not to mention the heat variations. Either that or you intentionally have a fan on to move the fabric cause you can definitely make out the fabric moving in the darker portions of the video.
@TrendingReviews
@TrendingReviews 5 ай бұрын
Window is closed and air tight, and definitely no fans on in the room. I think because of it free hanging from the ceiling mount causes it to move slightly, but I highly doubt any of these are causes. I have used many projectors (including laser ones) on this screen with no distortion - you can see this from my many projector reviews in a playlist on my channel.

Thanks for the demo! Super helpful. I'm looking for a cabinet that can conceal my UST (and that doesn't cost as much as the VIVIDSTORM Monte Carlo). Do you of any?

Thank you for the comment and glad the video was helpful! I was searching around for quite a while looking for a suitable UST cabinet, but I struggled to find any decent ones that were reasonably priced too, so the only option I had to keep coming back to was the VIVIDSTORM one. There seems to be a big gap in the market for these types of cabinets tbh. Not sure if you're based in the UK, but a non-motorised version I found was this: www.richersounds.com/kinetik-klif-ust1cs-soft-black.html

Would the picture not be better by using a CLR screen?
@TrendingReviews
@TrendingReviews Жыл бұрын
Both would offer good picture, but CLR is designed for light sources coming from the ceiling above, like skylights for example, however, they're very good at absorbing light completely, up to 95% even, so they may be slightly better than ALR. But I haven't tested on specifically myself.

in my personal opinion the sixe and brightness of a ust projector is so mind blowing the alr screen isnt necessary until it redues significantly in price. for context i have been using the xgimi aura 4k straight on to a wall that is painted grey using a high gloss black mixed with a matt white. had this set up for 8 months as my only tv. everyone is blown away. i pull the curtains at the same times of day i had to with my old tv and the size and quality make up for any lack of brightness in the daytime. paint costs about $35 and is already a significant upgrade to a white wall.
@TrendingReviews

Thats a really great choice. To be honest, if I had a large enough empty wall space, I would look at doing something like this too, without having to spend a LOT of money purely for an ALR screen.

@michaelt8682 hmmm. very interesting research man. very good ! i'm really diggin the experimental aspect of this sport/hobby ! please may i ask, what was the approximate ratio of gloss black to matt white, and is it oil or water-based paints ?

@michaelt8682 8 ай бұрын
@@onedayagogo I'm afraid I couldn't tell you off hand. my ADHD brain can't remember! but I did several ratios and painted some ply with the different paint ratios and tested them with a projector. it was just trial and error really. however I would say you use more black than you Imagine, and my wall is *quite* a dark grey

I saw a couple of videos on KZbin to convince me about the difference it would make, but I didn't see it in person myself, so it was a mix of being confident based on other users reviews that it works much better, and a bit of a gamble too, if that makes sense?

I am still trying to figure out what kind of screen to get for my JMGO N1 Ultra. Don’t think a screen like this would work since that projector is meant to sit on a table, chair or even the floor for optimum viewing from at least 8-14 feet away. Any suggestions?

Vividstorm sells ALR screens for long throw projectors, they call it Obsidian. That would work for the JMGO.

As reviewed from a channel called TheHookUp, the N1 Ultra produces significant laser speckle on ALR Screens or any non-white screen for that matter. He said that the N1Ultra performs best either being projected into a matte white wall, or a 1.0 gain white acoustically transparent screen. I'm considering buying the N1U for myself. How's your experience with it been? Have you noticed any of the reported laser speckle?
@Lafiro
@Lafiro Жыл бұрын
@@YZKMNY For now, I have only used my N1U outside in my garage against a white wall. Its been awesome. Yes there is some laser speckle, but not much. I mean watching it against a painted wall is absolutely not the right thing to do, but it works for now since it is so portable. This winter though I may just get a proper screen to watch movies in the house in another room.

I could understand projectors for 125-200"+. Really depends whether you're going the $3,500 route or $60,000. But really, you can find decent deals on 80"+ OLEDs for around $2,000 at Costco. The trade-off just isn't worth it to me.

I have a 150 4k laser projector. I've tried all the screens and my favorite was just the matte white wall that was behind the screens. I have a very smooth white wall with zero texture. Especially in darker rooms. The wall is also best because there no fabric waves or black border
