In this mini-lesson I wanted to talk about some tips to help you test mouthpieces and better acclimate to different mouthpiece setups. It's so important if you do switch mouthpieces to be able to figure out what makes each piece work... this can greatly improve your overall consistency!
I'm using my 1956 Conn 28A Long Cornet on this clip as it is super sensitive to mouthpiece changes! We usually have a large selection of Conn cornets in stock, check them out here:

0:58 At this point I can adjust to almost any mouthpiece fairly quickly, but that's the result of years of tinkering with designs and playtesting a huge variety of mouthpieces. Nowadays I try to keep things a little more consistent and I've been doing most of my playing on my ACB 3CS rim.
2:23 I like playing the same thing when I'm going between a couple mouthpieces so I can assess the efficiency, blow response, and where I feel the resistance when I'm playing the horn.
3:27 Start out with some bends. It's a great way to find where the mouthpiece wants to slot. Then do some lip slurs to feel how it wants to move between partials.
5:12 Single-note articulations are wonderful for feeling out where the mouthpiece wants to put the resistance.
6:46 How does it respond? How's the articulation? A mouthpiece that works for a lot of other people might not work best for you, and vice-versa.
