Was Peter the "rock" that Jesus refers to in Matthew 16? Trent Horn answers this common Protestant objection.
After his conversion to the Catholic faith, Trent Horn pursued an undergraduate degree in history from Arizona State University. He then earned a graduate degree in theology from Franciscan University of Steubenville and is currently pursuing a graduate degree in philosophy from Holy Apostles College.
Trent is a regular guest on the radio program Catholic Answers Live, a lecturer who speaks across the country on issues related to the Catholic faith, and the author of two books, Answering Atheism and Persuasive Pro-life, both of which are published by Catholic Answers Press.

Not sure which bible commentator brought up the point; but I heard it said that this was the first time the word 'Rock' was used as a name in ancient times. Therefore it would be much more significant than the other name changes such as Abraham and Sarah's change.

That whole argument is bogus and shows the level of your understanding. Put those words back into the context of the scripture as you see it and it makes no sense. There are far too many and better worded replies which utterly refute what you just said; of which Jimmy Akin gives an excellent one. I however will comment on 'your interpretation' - ability. The whole World sees the Fruits of your idea of 'revelation from the Spirit' in the 40,000 plus different interpretations of the 'spirit revelation' to which you and the other non-catholic sects are giving their attention. Unless you want to say that the Holy Spirit is the seed of Division and Confusion (causing 40,000 plus shameful splits in the Bride of Christ); or you want to say that the Catholics and the other 39,999 plus splits from Catholicism (of which you are just one) are ALL wrong; then I think you know where I am going with this. We Catholics are biblicaly 'regenerated' (as you like to call it); by our baptism and have become a New Creation in Christ as adopted children of God Most High. It is through the Catholic Faith, handed on from the first Apostles that we enjoy this relationship in its Truest and Fullest earthly form. Hope someday you can join us. On another note, not meaning to lump you in with all protestants; but isn't calling yourself a 'Doctor' a big no-no in your understanding of scripture. Jesus did say call no man 'father'.

a JW tried to tell me that Peter was given the nickname "rock" because he use to be called "stinky feet" or had stinky feet...Along with other nicknames being handed out to other apostles. What do you feel about this or say to this?

+brinnonvallere I haven't heard that one, but I keep getting the "rock" versus "little rock" argument (Petros versus petra). I guess just about any argument that's against the Catholic Church is "okay" with Protestants and others.

I'm just curious how one verse/a few verses in the entire Bible can justify the papacy, when the message of the Bible as WHOLE is Christ is the rock on which we are grounded on, the cornerstone of the church. ?

Hi Natalia. Can you agree that Christ (obviously in physical form) is not currently always present as the visible/physical cornerstone of the church as stated in Scripture? Sure it's in the Bible, but let's look at church history: The New Testament (where Christ is named as the cornerstone) didn't exist for about 90 years after Christ ascended into heaven. How would the early church and those who wanted to know about and understand more about Jesus go about it? I'm sure there are many churches/Christians today who use one verse of Scripture to justify a doctrine or approach to their faith. Of course Christ is the cornerstone but figuratively speaking you would still need a foundation. As a matter of fact the verse that you're probably using in your argument Ephesians 2:20 does say Christ is the cornerstone, but what does that verse state before that? It says Apostles and prophets. There's even mention of a "household" before that verse in verse 19. Can a household be divided against itself? What did Jesus literally say about a house divided against itself? It's very difficult to sometimes accept the hierarchy and ideals of a papacy, but Jesus did institute it with good reason. Sure a household may need some cleaning up but if it's divided against itself it will fall, but reform comes from within not outside of The Church.

I have the same question about praising the Virgin Mary. Not once in the Bible does it say to praise Mary or pray to her and she will give you peace, comfort, wisdom, guidance etc. etc. However as a WHOLE the Bible message of the Bible is very very very very singular about giving all of your glory to God, praise God, worship God, pray to God, in God you find refuge and peace, give thanks to the Lord your God, etc. etc. etc. I just want to know how it's justified?
