As a dog trainer, I'm going to throw this out there. Stop trying so hard. No high pitched noises, no reaching out. Talk calmly and walk through and ignore. Let them take their time with your smell and movements without TRYING to make them friends. They will start associating you with fresh food, safety and calmness. Keep your movements and noises calm and matter of fact.

Good point, I was going to say the same thing about the roof and the raccoons will bust the frame with their weight. And the dig down into the ground is spot on from what I have seen in other videos. Raccoons almost tore our storage shed apart trying to get in it to do God knows what in it lol

Ummmm....you have to enclose the roof. Sorry A. The raccoons will get all of them. And the coyotes, dogs, foxes, etc. Will easily dig under your cage too. Sad but true. Cement foundation best. When they are older you can let them completely out to run during day. All dogs need to be trained to leave them alone.

Yes raccoons love chicken, After my dog died, they were killing at least one chciken a night and dragging them under the fence.. I set a live trap and was catching raccoon after raccoon. Finally began locking the chcikens up in the chicken coop at night. I had an adult bronze tom and hen turkey and they even killed the hen and left her under the fence.

Allie honey, you definitely need a roof. Everything eats chickens and their level of commitment getting to them can be Herculean! I’ve had chickens going on 7 years now and through mistakes, free ranging and not secure enough runs, I’ve lost several over the years to fisher cats, coyotes, weasels, fox, and even hawks! Trust me, the effort now will save you sadness later.

Allie - Raccoons will absolutely climb up over and in, anywhere there is an opportunity. They are smart. Put pad locks on the doors. I went camping once and left all the food in the tent when I went out for a few hours. I came back and noticed paw prints everywhere... Not only did the raccoons unzip the tent to get in and take all the food, they REZIPPED the tent closed. I'm concerned they may dig under to get in.

I've had a decapitated chicken flock over only one night with a chicken wire coop. It's better to use hardware cloth so that they don't have room to grab! I don’t know if anyone’s mentioned this to you...make sure that any chicken wire or hardware cloth that you put around the chicken run or coop also gets dug trenched a few inches into the dirt. A lot of varmints going after chickens have no problems digging under a fence to get at them. Allie, I will have to side with Trent on this. Every place an animal can get in needs to be fenced off or made secure. Foxes and coyotes are extremely cunning and they can climb fencing and work their way in to the coop and the result is never good.

not only do you need a roof, you need to lock that thing down like Fort Knox. i very seriously recommend getting "construction mesh" and putting it around the first new feet up over top the chicken wire and also into the ground/floor of the run. most animals that love chickens for dinner can easily bite through normal chicken wire so construction mesh is a must. they can fit through ANY small hole. secure it the best you can or you will be chasing down a coyote with one of your chickens in its mouth across your property if you are lucky. i have chickens have have lost some in the past. their security is very important. they are like sitting ducks for lack of a better word.
@amyjensen4961
@amyjensen4961 4 жыл бұрын
I was going to recommend the same thing, we had racoons reach in and pull the heads off chickens through chicken wire and then another year coyotes just pushed the staples right out and slid into the coop like a hot knife through butter, I also heard skunks and weasels will tunnel under to get at the hens. I've upgraded to 1/4 inch hardware cloth on all sides, top and 8-12 inches down all around the coop/run area and also put hardware cloth over the ventilation inside the coop so that nothing can get in there at night too. It's lot more expensive than regular run of the mill chicken wire but hardware cloth is a lot more secure. To attach it more securely used large flat round metal washers and screws to secure the hardware cloth to the frame to make sure nothing can push through either. Hopefully you guys won't have any issues at all, but if a predator gets in there they will not likely leave anything alive...
@Kitkatrey
@Kitkatrey 4 жыл бұрын
Amy Jensen Perfect recommendation, those staples will come right out. Hardware cloth and washers with screws is best. I have never heard of skunks attacking chickens (since they are herbivores), but, they will probably want the food scraps in the run.

Just my experience-only need one rooster, need netting or roof over chicken pen. Be sure you have put fencing inches below the ground level as critters will burrow under to get to the chickens. Goats need things to challenge them, such as things to climb on, run around, etc. It is all a learning curve.

Hi guys. Glad you are settling down after your journey home. The coop build "discussions" made me chuckle. Nice to see you are just like the rest of us sometimes. A couple of observations .... chicken wire is for keeping poultry IN not for keeping predators OUT. Determined coyotes or similar will break the chicken wire. Raccoons can reach in through the chicken wire and rip a chickens head off. Rats will chew through it. Consider using half inch hardware cloth hammered in with U staples. Also consider a 2ft hardware cloth apron at ground level, attached to the bottom of the run, as predators may try to dig under the coop walls but will not normally back up 2ft to dig but rather try digging right next to the coop wall. I would cover it in gravel aswell. You could put a raised bed over the apron with chicken friendly herbs as a further deterrent. Sorry Allie, raccoons will definately climb that chicken wire and may even find a way through the run roof once they are up there. I would also be concerned that having gone to the trouble of raising the coop off the floor, which will help prevent racoons getting into the coop, you have built a "ladder" to the barn roof giving them access to the coop structure anyway. Until "fort knox" is built my flock are locked up in my drive out basement each night as in this part of NS everyone has a story about racoons getting into coops/runs and decimating the flock. Your best deterrent is your Mum's dog if he sleeps nearby. You could also try collecting any shed dog hair and putting it in an old pair of tights hung under the coop and barn roof overhang as the smell will deter racoons. A self opening/closing coop door is also a great thing as once they are inside that strong looking coop the chickens should be safe (use carabiners instead of slide bolts on the door and egg boxes as racoons will work out how to open slide bolts) ... and your Mum will not have to remember to run our to close it every night. A motion activated, solar security light that comes on after dusk (by which time the chickens will be roosting) may also act as a deterrent and you will be able to see from the house if anything is around the run Last thought, you may find the run floods due to rain from the barn roof. Enjoy the chickens, they are great if you take the time to watch them. Very curious and lots of personality. Good episode. Thankyou.

The hay in the goats pen needs to be off the ground and placed in a manger. You can either build a hay manger or purchase. The manger can be free standing or attached to a wall. With the hay left on the ground, the goats will "dirty" the hay and it will be unfit for them to eat. They also will enjoy an outdoor "Play station" to climb on. Goats love to climb! As others have written, chickens are "Food" for many animals, and a hungry animal can be very clever and determined. Love watching your videos!

That wouldn't trip the breaker in a line to ground fault. Installing a GFI would though, it also protects all outlets downstream. In the event of a ground fault the ground rod would create a voltage gradient in the soil beneath you (meaning there would be highest voltage at the ground rod and it would lower the further you got away from it). If that outlet is in the coup it's one way to make fried chicken though...

The great chicken debate is easy to resolve. YOU MUST ENCASE THE WHOLE THING IN CHICKEN WIRE! It is nothing for an animal like a raccoon, or even a fox, to climb the fence and get in. Hunger, when combined with the smell of tasty chickens, is an incredible motivator. If a fox gets it will usually kill everything inside the coop.

Hi Trent and Allie - I’m a long time watcher and first time commenter. Love your show! I’m here to tell you how to get your goats to bed down in their area. You need to put their feed in their bed area. That will get them used to it according to my goat expert friend (we’re talking 100’s of goats here!!) But I have to say one more thing and this has bothered me since you were driving out to Utah in the new truck - - You know, where Trent had an issue (admittedly, a control issue) with Allie driving the truck, and now it’s a bunch of stuff. It’s too much and the control thing is getting on my nerves. Allie is an AMAZING woman and can do anything!!! That and she’s a human, a grown woman or Pete’s Sake. Trent, I love you man, but that sh*t Get’s old and can be damaging to a relationship. Anyway, I hope that helps you guys with the goats. PS, I’m a nurse too and love that your mom is also. I hope she’s safe at work through this pandemic.

Me and my husband banter over our nit picky, obsessiveness things! But we laugh at them and love each other for it! If we were to record our day to day with our spouses there would be plenty of concerns from viewers because no one REALLY knows the Dynamics of our relationships! I see everyone’s points and concerns but minutes of their day can not define their relationship! I see Trent got lots of support instructing Allie on the ways of predators and chickens. HOWEVER :0) I would also like to say that what's going on here is way, way harder for Allie - a city girl, away from her family, in an unfamiliar environment, living with her boyfriend who is all in his cowboy nature suddenly, and his mother, no matter how sweet she is. During a pandemic! Trent is just a boy at home with his mom flexing all his muscles in the place he feels safest during a pandemic. I hope he is really grateful, and demonstrably appreciative, of all that Allie is doing, and the good-natured way she's doing it, just because she loves him. Just saying. By the by, I agree with all said about chickens and the need for some extra protection on the "roof" and also at the base of those walls, maybe underground.

Goats eat oats. Been watching your trip to the tip and now being entertained during lockdown. Thanks. Now payback time. I’m a wildlife photographer and I have a couple of tips that may help you befriend your goats. I’ll address this to Trent although I prefer Allie: I notice when you and Allie are in the goat enclosure you are several feet apart. Watch the goat, head looks at you, turns to Allie, back to you, back to Allie. Typical behavior for a prey animal. Humans are predators. Our eyes face forward so we can estimate the distance to our prey(3D). Prey animals’ eyes are on the side and see a much wider range(2D). They look for motion, a potential threat. When they see one the flight fright instinct is engaged. When they see 2 potential threats they freak. Your goat has nowhere to flee. It’s cornered and so it is very scared. Only 1 should go into the enclosure at a time to feed and bond. If you both want to enter you should be as close to each other as possible, you know, like when you guys hug on camera. This way the goat has to look in only one direction, one threat. However, it still feels cornered. Best to do the bonding outside where the goat has an escape route, or at least feels that it does. But don’t approach. Take some feed, ignore the goat, head bent down, no eye contact. Sit and be patient. Stay together. Let the goat come to you. This may take days. Be consistent. I’ve had wild big horn sheep sleep 15 feet in front of me and bull moose an arms length away. When you are in the rhythm of the goat, it will know. Good luck, hope to see you return to your home in Argentina soon, Jim

I've been loving watching you be temporary homesteaders. I'm a full time van dweller originally from California. I'm currently sheltering in place in a national forest in the southwest. What you are currently getting to do looks like so much more fun than just sitting around at my campsite all day everyday. I'm super grateful that I get to spend quarantine sheltering in a van in the forest rather than a crowded apartment building, but homesteading looks like a whole lot more fun. Thanks for the great content! Keep up the good work!

I used to have a chicken coupe JUST like that with the roof gap and everything. One time, in the middle of the night, I heard some rustling noises outside, and thought to myself " That sounds like its coming from the chicken coupe", so I went out into the pitch black dead of night to investigate. Lo and behold I saw a tiny shape stealthily scaling up the chicken wire to try and slip through the gap above the coupe, JUST LIKE YOURS! I thought to myself "Oh man, this is it!" as I raised my flashlight and pointed it at the two little shinning beady eyes staring right at me in the dark. Well I'll be a bow legged bandicoot , it was the neighbors 18 month old toddler, in a diaper, in the middle of the night, going right through that gap, to get my damn chickens! Ok so that never actually happened, but the moral of the story is I'd be closing that gap for sure.

Really need to dig a trench around the entire coop and bury wire or sheeting to avoid the diggers escaping or predators entering.

Yes, it is super important to lay wire around the bottom edges to keep the predators out cuz they will dig right into them.

Hi there. I’m a Bioveterinary Scientist and thought of a few tips of getting the goats friendlier while watching this. Try not to let Oso in while you’re trying to get them used to yourselves. They’re naturally prey animals so are very scared of potential predators- like a big fluffy dog. When they’re friendly towards humans (actively approach you when you walk in), then try to introduce the dog. Also it might be worth trying to give them a little bit of Chaff (you should be able to get it from any country store or anywhere selling horse feed but I don’t 100% know how available it is to get in US), or fresh vegetables and give them this while you sit in there close to them. The positive reinforcement of a delicious treat with human interaction will be more beneficial than their usual food type- as they don’t have to take hay from you, as they know they will get it at some point with no human interaction. Be careful not to give too much Chaff or treat foods as it can cause gastric ulcers and diarrhoea- not pleasant for them or you cleaning it. Try just lots of short intervals of interaction- 15-20 minutes of socialising with them maybe 3 times a day- try get into a bit of a routine initially. Don’t bombard them with human time as they’ll never become friendly and they’ll be permanently stressed. They will get there- but it will take time if they’re not used to humans. Good luck and I think it’s incredible how kind you have both been moving back to help Trents mum. Stay safe and good luck.

Hayley Woodruff sounds like great advice. I wonder if they adopted a Goat who is already use to and affectionate with humans and dogs, and putting them together, would it help to have that Goat as a role model for the others? I definitely think so! This works with other animals, even humans, right, to have a role model.

Hi Trent and Allie, your commenters are giving lots of great advice about the goats and about the chicken coop becoming more secure. I hope that you can spend the time reading thru these comments.... even though its approaching 2500 comments!!!!

You dont even want to see what raccoons can do to chickens, gruesome! You definitely need the chicken wire! And consider burying a foot of it under the coop boarder they will dig to get in as well! Thankfully you have a flock dog they are awesome dogs, and will be a great protector! Good luck it's all mostly worth it I love our little farm and all our animals😊❤

I work with rescuing feral cats in the NJ area and was in the process of trying to rescue a momma cat with her 2 kittens. The raccoons got to one of the kittens before the rescue and I was heartbroken. Predatory wildlife will do anything to get in and can even do damage to your structures to get to the "food" so definitely reinforce the coop. Good luck!

Thank you so much for your videos, you two always light up my heart! The positivity and love from each of you is so encouraging. I Look forward to every fun adventure! I also heartily agree that every inch of the chicken coop needs to be enclosed (as best you can of course) for the evening and night especially. Even baby weasels will squeeze thru small holes and kill the chickens, and leave them behind. My favorite chicken item is the hanging chicken waterers...... you fill a sheetrock bucket full of water and then put this special faucet on it. It keeps the hay and poop out of their fresh water and if you keep it near the heat lamp it is less likely to freeze.

Re: Goats. Get a book, something to throw on the ground, and sit there quietly. This may sound all hippie, but goats are intuitive, and if you can keep relaxed and mellow, they will become comfortable. Spend hours with them. Goats are also social, and they love gentle voices. I agree with the folks saying the pup needs to be assigned to barn duty 24/7 while it's young. Wait too long, and he won't know his job. Best wishes for the farmlet.

And don't talk in a booming Trent voice, even if you're videotaping, when you're around the goats. Be gentle around those girls. And understand they are grown beings, not kids. Your relationship with kids would be different, but you got grown goats.
