I agree I'm playing BBb tuba and tenor trombone with trigger for my school bands (wind ensemble for tuba and wind symphony for trombone). I can still comfortably hit a B0 to a F4 on the tuba and a B1 to a C5 on trombone. Just takes a lot of practice on both every day.

A few questions for next time... 1) Do you ever intend to learn how to use valves properly? (Expecting another long rant in response to this one, lol) 2) Would you consider doing a video where you attempt to copy Phillip McCann's vibrato on cornet? 3) Do you agree that there's a strange kinship that exists between soppists (such as myself) and bass trombonists? It seems to me that the two psychotic figures in the band tend to get on very well, when not busy competing with each other volumewise... 4) Have you considered doing a video or two on practice materials (books, etc) and routines? (I have plenty of materials I could share or recommend if you wanted to do this). 5) What's the better use for an instrument that plays like crap - destruction (fun) or making it into a lamp?

I have played an O'Malley cimbasso for the past 2 years (natively 7 year tuba player) and it's been the most fun I've had playing low brass so far. Definitely pick one up if you get a chance or go to a shop and try it out. Pedal notes are so free.

A tuba like instrument with a double reed did exist in the 19th C. It's the sarrusophone, invented in 1856, a family of outdoor wind instruments.

Trent, I decided to ask you this question before seeing “Woodwind - A Brass Perspective,” uncertain of whether it was the kind of thing you could answer. But having now seen that video (and its complement), I see that it’s right up your alley. The question is, which brass instrument should I get? I play the “bassoon” (as featured in the previously-mentioned video, also known as a licorice stick). And the alto “bassoon,” and when in college several decades ago, the bass “bassoon.” I like instruments. I also marginally play the piano, the guitar, a Tibetan singing bowl, and a small practice bagpipe, which I only take out after 2 AM when rather intoxicated, to impress my also intoxicated guests who haven’t yet gotten the notion that it’s time to leave. We have a good laugh (they’re laughing WITH me, I assure you), and then everyone goes home. The following Monday of course I get the notice from the landlord and by end of week all is forgotten. So I have this idea that I want to play a brass instrument. I was at a sort of mixed jazzish-rockish kind of show a few months ago and what was notably lacking was a trombone. I tried to buy one on eBay then and there because I felt I was just the man to correct this situation, but I couldn’t remember my password to log in and the new phone was not being helpful. So I didn’t buy it. And just today, I had a rather conical-bore bugle IN MY CART on eBay when I watched your video review of same and immediately deleted said item from cart, leaving only some other item which I don’t need. So, serious question. If you were such a person as I, and you figured you had enough time left on this planet to (amongst other of life’s activities) learn how to marginally make something akin to music on one brass instrument, which would it be, and why? My budget starts at zero, but I am willing to negotiate. I’m now thinking euphonium. Am I getting warm?

Thanks for your videos, Trent. That brass music in your intros; is that available to the public? And...all my adult life I've struggled with a Selmer B flat radial trumpet, probably manufactured around 1969 - it's been a love/hate relationship, though in recent years increasingly enjoyable...any thoughts on radial trumpets? it must be an idea that did not catch on....

The one with the unparallel valves? I’ve never tried one. Would love to get my hands on one some day
@georgeclausen2408
@georgeclausen2408 4 жыл бұрын
@@TrentHamilton Yes, the valves are mounted somewhat like the pistons in a WWII vintage fighter plane. If the trumpet had about fifty valves they would make up a complete circle. With only three valves the unparallel arrangement is not very obvious; it would take a more accomplished musician than I to feel a difference in the valves' orientation compared to a "standard" trumpet. Nevertheless, I think it''s a good quality trumpet; I paid $400 for it in 1971. A while back I did a Google search about radial trumpets; as I recall I came up with one well used one that was going for $800 or so.
