I’d add one more bugaboo about the 955 - it’s 2/3 valve combination is around 40 cents flat, requiring significant embouchure compensation to bring closer in tune.

Trent, I play baritone in the SFBB, or did until I retired. I have both a BE2056 and an '80's Globe Sovereign 955. The older 955's are hard to beat, metal valve guides, better intonation than the new ones. I enjoyed your solos, beautiful playing.
@markwatkinson44405 жыл бұрын
I know what you mean about the valve guide, I was on a what I think was a 90s sovereign baritone which had a built into the valve. I just moved to a 90s or early 2000s 4 valved sovereign, yes that's right, and it has those stupid plastic ones, but it's such a nicer instrument. Also what would you recommend for a constant sticking sometimes valve no matter when I oil or wash it. A good baritone solo is Donegal bay. I've only been playing baritone for about a year and was a cornet player before that.

This is the same make and model that I play and I have the same issues. When I was first loaned the horn, I changed the springs, felts and valve guides. I also do the "rotate" manoeuvre to get rid of the water. Another fault I find is that the valves tend to drip water onto my trousers during a long performance and it looks like I've pee'd myself when the band takes the final bow!
@ClogDancingFiddler6 жыл бұрын
Yeah, that's what I tend to do :-)

One of my band teachers in school was primarily a pianist but she knows her way around baritones and euphs pretty well. She brought her baritone in (a normal 3 + 1 compensating) and it had this plastic cup that would slide onto the bottoms of the 3 valves to catch spit. Not sure what it's called but I've seen some decent trumpet players with similar accessories.
@pumpkin4643 жыл бұрын
Well I finally took the plunge and purchased this horn. Compared to the knock-off copies it wins hands down on every level. The first thing apparent is it weights significantly more than those Chinese copy empty soda can feeling instruments. The second thing is everything feels solid, smooth, and the compression is first rate. Lastly it is very responsive and easy to change the color of the sound.
@Uuuuuuurrgggggghhhhh5 ай бұрын
I've had my plastic valveguards on my B&H Souvereign (roundstamp) replaced with metal ones that are fixed to the valve (and not to the stem). Much better!

My experience with plastic valve guides is pretty bad too. In my high school band we had Yamaha euphoniums and in my freshman year one of those little plastic valve guides got rotated somehow. It took me a while to figure that out. So there’s a little hole in the top of the valve where a little notch on the valve guide fits into. But there just happened to be another larger hole on another part of the top of the valve that the guide somehow got stuck into. It was a pain to fix.
@BluReza6 жыл бұрын
Harlequin is such a good piece!!
@Radio1998.6 жыл бұрын
They make the Guides plastic so you can replace them to suit your color. Most professional baritones and euphoniums make their valve guides out of plastic. My John Packer came with extra valve guides
@TrentHamilton6 жыл бұрын
To suit your colour?? They're hidden components that you only see when you disassemble the valve...

Trent-Forgive an ignorant American, if you can, but here in the land upover baritone and euph are treated interchangeably in community bands such as mine. I know the difference between the two (conical bore=euphonium), but what does the baritone do in British band mix that the euphonium and trombone don’t?
@TrentHamilton6 жыл бұрын
The lighter timbre mixes better with the tenor horn (alto horn as it’s called in the US), where as the eupho is more of a colouring instrument.
@Metal-Possum6 жыл бұрын
Yamaha use replaceable plastic valve guides on their Euphononiums. More annoyingly, they can be fitted in more than one orientation, and render the instrument completely useless until corrected. Those who like to fidget with the valve caps and buttons during a break are either already very familiar with this problem, or will soon discover it.

Agree with both of your criticisms. It makes floods of water, especially if the instrument cools for any length of time (tea break during rehersals LOL). One thing I've noticed is that any 2/3 valve combinations seem a nightmare to play in tune (very, very flat). Is that just my bari technique or might it be the instrument?
@p3p1t41t42 жыл бұрын
I have discovered both of your points to be the case for me too. A flat, mid range, is particularly grating and difficult to make sing.

Trent. I recently took a class on world culture and not band. So now I do not have a tuba. I'm sure you know that they cost about as much as your first car. And since I'm getting my licence I need something cheaper that's not going to be part Chineseium. So where can I get a cheap good quality tuba? Maybe make a video?
@ericpalacios9206 жыл бұрын
I hear Wessex, Eastman, and John Packer are pretty good budget options. They're chinese-made but go through a lot more quality control than other importers. Also I know that Wessex has a really good return/refund policy - there's a 3 year warranty on manufacturer error and also you get 2 weeks to try the instrument once it gets to you and decide if you like it (of course you have to pay shipping though). I also tried a 4v Eastman BBb and liked it, never would've guessed its Chinese. Don't know much about JP brass but Trent likes their Eb Bass. I'm mostly just going off what I've seen on reviews and forum posts though. If you really want non-Chinese and affordable you basically have to go second hand.
