As a miniature painter, the WoW textures always looked like they were done by a mini painter or someone who understood miniature painting. Look at high end heavy metal or comic-book style minis and you'll see the a lot of the same dramatic edge highlights, texturing, and contrast. Love it.

makes sense with the alleged origins of either warcraft or starcraft (i always forget which) being a GW licensed deal that fell through, also makes it kind of funny that people in the miniature community have relatively recently been complaining about 40k/AoS designs looking 'too close to WoW' when the earlier models were arguably the inspiration for WoW's style

I use the same texture trick (working in GIMP, usually character model/clothes for personal game mods). Overlay, grain merge, and multiply are my favourite layer modes, since depending on light levels, contrast, and other stuff it's not always the same one that works best, but usually one of those. Though it's easy to just switch around until you find the one you like most.
@ArchaneleoКүн бұрын
Same thing for me. Add, multiply, and noise are some of my personal favorite. Multiply can cover all types of shadows and levels of shadows, just correct the hue for light sources and you'll be set. Absolutely wonderful.

I'd look at a range of media and see throughlines of artistic direction. With wow - they have this thick chunky painterly look to them. The commonplace of those characteristics makes you think 'this is blizzard' because of how consistent it is. Some really good examples of this are; Darkest Dungeon - Thick lines, muted tones, entirely painted - there is no texture overlay here. Hollow Knight - Cell shaded, generally flat colour ranges with consistent linework - usually the same thickness everywhere. Lots of curved shape language. When people talk about 'style' or 'stylized art' what they're specifically referring to is art that has consistent ideas translated across pieces. It's a recipe for an artist or company to translate between works to allow them to be cohesive. Here are some basic questions to get an idea; Line thickness; Is it different for details within the character vs character border. Does it have line weight [lighter towards light source]? Is it smooth and round, or jagged? Is it a combination? Character shapes; Are there a lot of round elements? Are there a lot of square elements? Are there a lot of triangle elements? Do they have repeating patterns? Or are they irregular? Are they symmetrical? Or are they Asymmetrical? Colour choice; Do they use a wide range of colours? Do they use a limited pallet of colours? Are the colours highly saturated? Are the colours desaturated? Is there a wide range in values? Is there a small range in values? Is there no range of values at all? Shading; Is it cel shaded? Is it fully rendered? Is it rendered with texture? Additional; Are the environments Complicated in relation to character design? Do they match complexity? Are they less complex? Just asking these questions when looking at art [I find game art is easier to identify since by design it needs to be cohesive] will help you understand the formula the artists have concluded will be their art style. This is handy for artists, even amateur ones as from here you can decide what elements you want to incorporate and establish an art style. Maybe something clashes, but you can always make the conscious decision to swap it for something that you think looks better. It's also way less intimidating to establish as you go than to say 'figure out an art style lmao' as a lot of videos suggest. I should note that I stayed away from painted works specifically. This is because it's more cohesive and thus less clear. It's harder to look at a forest and point to a stump than it is in an open field. That is to say that painted works are far more complex as they integrate their decisions intuitively as they paint. Proportions are another big tipping point - wow likes big chunky items/gear/proportions. In more painterly works they may make a character more dainty for aesthetic purposes. Bounce some of these questions around and you'll be able to identify key markers for style in almost any work, as long as it's stylised in some way. In other cases where it's not stylised you may even see patterns, not because its a stylistic choice, but because it's the artists habits. In others it's a conscious decision. Neither are right or wrong, one is just suited towards commercial work than the other.

Man ngl, as a concept artist working in AAA, i absolutely detest the WoW artstyle and always thought it looked corny and amateur as hell. A lot of the guys on the WoW art team left are the ones who barely understand accurate lighting mechanics and hardcore anatomy. They all have just "surface level" or even "fanart" level understanding of these concepts. The only good concept artist with a hardcore foundation to ever work on WoW was Wei Wang who left blizzard years ago.

Maybe I missed it in your video, but a good artist to call for WoW out is Fanny Vergne. It's worth knowing too that a lot of the lighting information can be borrowed from lightmaps from 3D sculpts. Concept art in this style is one thing but I don't think anything (as far as I was able to find out) goes into the game without being sculpted beforehand and then painted over. A lt of this is the nature in which the 3D models in WoW have mirrored textures. So you really only need to sculpt and texture half of a stone slab, or half of a sword, etc. And for you 3D sculptors out there, a lot of the style comes from Orb brushes in zBrush, especially for stones. It's my opinion that Fanny is the reason WoW looks like it does today. She joined During Cata and MoP and if you look a the art you can see her influence everywhere.
@TrentKaniugaАй бұрын
This is the art style we used on Burning Crusade and Wrath of the Lich king when I worked on those projects. I don't know Fanny's work, because I left Blizzard after Diablo 3 shipped.
@gatleonhartАй бұрын
@@TrentKaniuga Oh really? Well I stand corrected then, although that kinda sucks cause I can't really see any of it in BC :( which is disappointing cause I think if it would have been more apparent I would have enjoyed those environments a lot more. It's obviously a lost detail from concept to game asset. I definitely see it in Glenn Rane's early stuff, albeit nowhere near as chunky as Cata and MoP. I can kinda see it in Lich King, more towards the later patches and at times it's a bit impressionistic. The concept art I have from that era is a lot more sharp ended. Not super chunky until you look at the Death Knight stuff? Especially when looking at Peter Lee's environments. They're all gorgeous of course, but they almost look like a different IP. When I really noticed this was Legion. Almost as if they went from 256/512 to 1024/2048 in texture resolution. Either way I'm def checking out the Gumroad after work! They've been getting me to do a lot more of this kinda stuff at work and I landed on your vids by searching for inspiration. Definitely a new sub and thanks for the history lesson!

If you look at early World of Warcraft you can clearly see, that this style hadn't manifested yet. It took a few years for that style to be fully applied across the board and the art direction to be less haphazard and more focused, but at some point i think they overshot the goal. The style has become a caricature of itself. Just compare swords over the years. In Classic there were straight swords that don't follow this at all and even the real chonkers, that in their outline follow it, seem petite and realistic compared to modern WoW Style. A modern WoW sword is more like a block of stone that you clobber someone with instead of cutting them. As an example take Ashkandi (Classic) and its two later iterations Reclaimed Ashkandi (Cataclysm) and Ashkandur (Dragonflight).

actually a good summary of blizzard's artstyle comes down to its origin: copying warhammer minis. When designing a character, can i cast it in resin in ~1:28 scale? a scroll needs to be thick, otherwise it will break. all the details need to be chunky and exaggerated, otherwise it will be hard to cast and not very visible in this scale. Same goes for the textures, games have lighting models, but minis have specular highlights that are handpainted

I liked the grittier and subtler SC1 and Diablo 1/2 art style. You can see a lot of this in those games actually, it's just a lot more toned down. After Burning Crusade I started to dislike WoW's art style though, just a little more subtlety would be great.
