Worked for Red Wing for like 11 years. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve done this for a customer. You wouldn’t believe the reactions some guys give when a boot they weee ready to write off comes out looking so good. Sells new boots and builds customer loyalty.

So, in your opinion, on newer boots as in newly purchased boots. Is that coarse grout brush still okay to use or possibly something to hold off on until the boots are a bit older and probably have more severe wear to them
@MrDavidlfields3 ай бұрын
@@mbarrios09 a toothbrush should be fine but the best bet is to avoid letting mud dry onto the leather. Nothing dries out leather faster than dry mud and dust sucking out the moisture from the hide. My method for dealing with dried on mud is to knock off what I can and then brush like they did in the video. For my personal boots, I hose them off before the mud can dry. Take care of the leather and a good boot can take several soles over the life of the boot.

Just cleaned and conditioned my leather wallet in a similar manner last week. Went with Obenaufs for conditioner, but I've used the shoe oil before on other products and have some on the shelf. I used to use neatsfoot oil, because that's all I knew growing up, but I went down the rabbit hole of leather conditioners and now I have a collection, which, ironically, lightened my wallet for the before mentioned cleaning. My wallet is going on 20 years and still looks new. Leather is such a wonderful product.

Why is it so satisfying to watch an old pair of boots being reconditioned?
@RatdogDRB3 ай бұрын
Yes indeed! THIS is how you preserve your hoof-covers from falling apart on you! Clean/condition. That caked on mud can (over time) works like sandpaper on the fibers/stitching. Never used Hurberd's Oil, but I'm a fan of the Obenauf products (they might make the product for White's brand?). When I don't want that leather darkened, I'm a HUGE fan of Bick4. It won't darken, but it also does not add those waterproofing properties either. But it'll sure soften stiff leather nicely! God bless you fellers in your efforts, and extra cookies for the shop dog, that's hard work guarding that dog bed!

I just use a garden hose to blast off most of the mud (usually while its wet but not always). Then a damp cloth later and conditioner if needed. I usually use boots with a much deeper grip than moc toes if it's going to be muddy so the hose usually helps to clear the mud out of the cleats as well.

I have a pair of boots that are now the same shade as the ones you have there. I'm not particularly fond of that color. So they sit in the closet. Is there any way to fix that? Thanks. @Claytonboots3 ай бұрын
Your not missing anything but you can do whatever you want with boots. Recommended or not
@adamkakos26713 ай бұрын
That may be true, but I doubt it’s that simple. They went so far as to make a video telling everyone not to do this because of the effects it has on the leather. Professionals like them aren’t going to purposely contradict their own professional advice, as well as what Thursday recommends. That’s why I asked what I’m missing.

I’ve found that the little round wool daubers are easiest for applying oil to boots. Oil should be applied very liberally so that it can soak into the leather and the excess wiped off.

Would this work on my 45 year old Timberlands? Any idea how to improve the now non-existent waterproofing?
@914Rocky3 ай бұрын
Asked that waterproofing question before finishing the video. Will that waterproofing oil work? I am a bit uneasy darkening the leather after this many years.
@argento84473 ай бұрын
@@914Rocky Tiberland's leather is nabuk not smooth leather, using liquid creams and conditioners will inevitably change the colour and the texture of the leather quite significantly, so I wuldn't suggest it if you want to preserve the original look and feel of the boot. That being said, nabuk and suede are still leather and need to be conditioned from time to time, there are products for that purpose such as the Saphir Renovateur spray for suede and nabuk, which has decent (althogh not exceptional in my opinion) conditioning properties and a mild waterproofing effect, there are more effective products when it comes to conditioning and hydrating suede and nabuk leather but I'm not sure if they're available in other countries (my favourite is the spray balm by LM, a small italian company that makes high end shoe care products). For waterproofing on the other hand, Shaphir imo offers the best product on the market with the Super Invulner spray, quite pricey, but it's an excellent product with great waterproofing capabilities that naturally wears off over time, so it doesn't clog up the pores of the leather and gives you the opportunity to condition the leather when the waterproofing treatment wears off. My suggestion is to thoroughly brush your boots to get rid of dust and dirt, get some leather soap or shampoo (better if specifically formulated for suede and nabuk), wash and let them dry overnight, the following day (or when they're dry) brush them again to lift the fibers of the leather, apply the Saphir renovateur spray (more than one coat might be needed if you have never conditioned them), let your boots rest for 30 mins, brush them again ad apply the Saphir Super invulner, and let dry overnight before wearing them (do not brush after applying the waterproofer or you'll remove it). Hope this helps!

I always look at it this way. Which pair of boots is the cobbler going to take most care over and try his best to avoid cosmetic issues like scratches. If guys would do this every six months or so they’d save so much money in boots. They’d likely have a set worthy of a resole, and then they can alternate boots allowing a day to dry between wearings. It’s a big ask, but buying two pairs at once equals way more than twice the amount of wear.
