Trent, I'm a retired ATCS and you did fine. Everyone, controllers included sometimes feel like they are babbling on the radio. As you use the system more and more it becomes easier. If anyone ever tells you that they don't feel uncomfortable from time to time they are lying. Merry Christmas!

When I first started working retail I wasn't comfortable paging on the public address system, now its no big deal. I realized it doesn't matter if I page funny, people will just get a laugh out of it if I do and won't know who did it unless they work there. I'm also an amateur radio operator. I realized, if I don't work up the nerve to transmit and talk, nobody's going to talk back to me. Practice is the only way to develop a nice "radio voice". Do still mentally review what I'm going to say on air before I transmit. :D

The great thing about getting your PPL at a field like that is that by the time you get to 100 hours or so ATC will start to feel like an old friend, at least when they're not too cranky. Not to mention a lot of deltas like yours are busier than many class C fields. The only downside (besides watching the Hobbs roll while you're #5 in sequence for takeoff) is you can get spoiled thinking anything under 5000' is a short runway!

"Sketchy" is in the mind of the beholder. My first big airport landing was at Ohare in a C172. It was like taking a Volkwagen bug for a pleasure drive on a Formula 1 track -- during the race. Tower: "Cessna 47Xray on long straight in, what max speed can you maintain on final?" Me: "About 100 knots..." Tower: : "Cessna 47Xray, maintain no less than 100 knots on final. Traffic is a DC9 that's coming in behind you." Me: "No pressure I guess. 100 knots as long as I can." Tower: "Thank you sir."

Trent coming from from an 30k hr airline pilot you sound better on the radio than some of my contemporaries. We all mumble early mornings and late nights. Practice makes the master and absolutely not caring about making a verbal mistake helps too, just say correction and laugh at yourself that’s what I do. I think your better half is ready for some flying lessons. Happy New Year-Steve

I flew into Reno for the air races back in 1997. It most certainly wasn’t as calm this video. The radio chatter was constant. The day I went to leave Reno, there was 50 mph winds, so I had to stay an extra day. My pitot tube cover flew away and under my canopy cover was lots of dust, but the cover stayed on. Flying with the big boys is a lot of fun.

I enjoyed that you guys are cute together. All aviators go through the anxiety of getting it right when talking to ATC. Excellent job. Much better than you know. Here's a pro tip: "FF Hold(ing) Short RWY 26" is a required read back unless given: 1). "Line up and Wait RWY 26", or 2). Cleared for takeoff RWY 26. If given 1 or 2, read those back. If you are Holding at an intermediate position, then, read that back. ATC will correct you otherwise. They want to hear you understand you are not to enter the runway. 👍

30+ years with the airlines and my biggest issue was how fast controllers talked in larger airports giving more possibilities for error. If you weren’t familiar with an airport, it could sometimes be a very uncomfortable feeling. ORD is a prime example. The fast talking (time) saved isn’t worth the potential misunderstanding. Reno did great.

I was very intimidated with ATC till I flew under the Seattle Bravo last fall. Flight following steered me around other traffic, around approaches under shelves. Probably had to switch frequencies 20 times. Absolutely terrifying in the moment but was able to keep up with the radio. I used to fly way out of my way to pass any towered airport. On my way home from Seattle I flew over them all.

"I would like to wait 10 minutes." Good instincts! You can always ask for 2 min delay for wake turbulence. BTW, you should have let her say it. She was 80% correct. :) I did a lot of my PPL and IR work at a Class C airport in a Tomahawk, so I was always deconflicting with the airlines. Fun times!

On my very rare towered landings, I always try to set myself up for the most logical thing for them to do is give me straight in just to simplify everything. :-) So far has worked every time. :-) Although last time in Henderson, NV, they cleared me into the airspace and hadn't given me any direction beyond that to the point I was on about a 2 mile final... I knew they were watching me and weren't saying anything, so figured fine, but at that point did call back just to get some clarity, at which point straight in and cleared to land. :-) Never really had any trouble with tower talk, but still always, like you, just get a little nervous for some reason. :-)

I know that you know this but it's worth mentioning so that others can gain confidence. Before keying the mic there are 3 things that you should communicate: (1) who you are (2) where you are, and (3) what you want to do. It sounds simple enough but if you learn to fly outside a controlled airport environment it can be intimidating. You are doing just fine with your communications. Safety first, Haley is right on point, little planes are sketch.

Merry xmas Trent! Always enjoy the videos but I really like how you inntroduced your copilot to making radio calls. On a quiet CTAF and stepping in to take over when needed is a great way to get people involved. Have a good one! Edit: I thought I would include an anecdote about that feeling of pressing the brain disengage (ptt) button... I started out playing flight sims on my pc before getting a real license but on VATSIM (online but real people are the ATC) and even on that everybody seems to chicken out (me included) on their first go and just disconnect instead of transmitting and getting clearance to fly. I think all pilots know that feeling of talking to ATC when you aren't used to it and I think Hayley did a great job on the CTAF for a first try.

The magnetic poles shift around in a cyclic pattern based on what the solar wind is doing to the planet. The thing we use as magnetic north is really the average of all of those yearly positions. Over time the poles drift in addition to that. Once that secondary drift in relation to any runway creates a difference of more than 5 degrees off the runway heading, the numbers are changed into the next block of 10. Where you are in relation to the pole can make that happen fairly often.

Coming from commercial aviation it's a good habit to always thorougly check that there is no traffic on final or on the runway (except traffic vacating the runway) and stating this loudly for yourself (not on the frequency) while doing so. Even on large airports with ground and tower controllers it is possible that someone has overlooked something or some traffic is aligned with the wrong runway. Just ask Harrison Ford! 😉

The way I teach radio communication at a non towered airports is start and end with you are talking to, and in the middle "who you are, where you are, what you are doing"...So airport abc, (who you are) freedom fox, (where you are) 5 miles to the south, (what you are doing) inbound full stop runway 26, airport abc....

Hailey had a good question about why the magnetic north is changing. The Earth rotation is extremely stable on a human time scale, but the molten iron in Earth’s core is not moving in a direction exactly aligned with the rotation pole. This causes the magnetic poles and local magnetic north to move all the time.

Im a bit late, but as a pilot turned controller my biggest suggestion to pilots who are scared of ATC is 99% of the time all pilots need to do is repeat after me. If I say "runway XX cleared for takeoff" you say "runway XX cleared for takeoff" if I say "maintain VFR at or below 3500" you say "maintain VFR at or below 3500" The hardest about ATC communications for pilots is the initial call, and all you need to remember is tell us where you are, who you are, what you want to do, and if you're in the air already what altitude you're at. Every transmission after that is repeat after me. Also remember controllers are normal people just like you. If you saw me at the grocery store buying my groceries you would have no idea that I'm the guy you're scared to talk to on the radio.
