Learning flight in South Florida, where we have to talk to everyone... I have to admit that in flight communications with control has always been my most painful thing to do... Excellent video for those of us that are truly 'rusty pilots', thanks for sharing. Its the old adage at work - use it or lose it. Working comms in controlled airspace can be intimidating if you are rusty but your words of wisdom are precisely on point - at the other end, there is someone there specifically to help those in their airspace. I learn something from each of your videos so for selfish reasons, please keep up the great work. Best wishes to you and yours during this Holiday Season and 2020.

I learned at a controlled airport. Yet, live near an uncontrolled airport with a VOR and ILS. My dad's retired from the arilines, and back to CFI. He's got his students all jammed up on radio calls, and just generally overloaded. Maybe this will help him sort that out. I've been trying to help as much as I can with perspective, but it's still 20 years ago for me, since my 1st solo. BTW. anyone remember when they made Lear Fan out in Reno? my parents worked there before my time. Oshkosh is a blast. But what about Sentimental Journey? Everyone flying their Cubs in, and trying to line them up by tail numbers.

I'm a CFI in Daytona Beach, one of the busiest C's in the U.S. (definitely the busiest training area). I can tell you, comfort over comm's comes with experience and exposure. It's like learning a new language. If you don't practice it then you won't get better at it. My advise for now is focus on breaking down what they tell you. Repeat back commands they give you (vectors, clearances, squawks, etc). Other information is usually supplemental. Also, head over to liveatc.net and listen to a busy C approach or tower frequency. Try to repeat back the comm's that ATC is giving other airplanes.

You honestly handled those calls extremely well. I've flown the vast majority of my flights into controlled airspace and make those same mistakes and more even now. The only thing I woulda done different for you is flown to a class D which is a little more forgiving in terms of airline traffic and radio traffic. Beyond that your radio calls were just what they were supposed to be!

Great advice, except for the part about better to talk too much. Hogging the frequency with needless chatter is probably the one thing that ticks off controllers. Using nonstandard terminology is one thing, but holding the frequency is another. Just say exactly what you need, repeat back what they said concisely, and if they need anything they'll ask.

Travis Bohanan imagine you’re a controller and just noticed somebody made a wrong turn and is on a course to intersect another aircraft. Would you like to wait until the pilot checking in finishes telling you his life story to be able to fix the problem? Standard phraseology is terse for a reason.

About 35 years ago, I was student pilot and had to fly into 2 controlled air space airports. I always hated them. But one I called aproach, no answer, I kept calling until I switched to tower frequency when I was actually between the tower and it's radar. The radar was on top of a hill near the airport, the airport was in the valley. I literally flew between the tower and the radar unit as I got in touch with the tower. I told them I had called them on the approach frequency but got no answer. The didn't give me a hard time, I got my signature and returned home. I miss flying.

Some decades ago as a student pilot on my second solo long cross country one of the airports I had to land at was a class D (RDG) in Pennsylvania from my home airport (MPO). As I was talking to the tower of that airport and cleared to land I taxied off the active and the controller gave me a phone number to call the tower once I got into the FBO lounge. Oh SHIT what did I do?!!!! Apparently I busted their class D airspace by a very small margin before initiating my radio call to them as I tried to initially call the tower first prior to calling approach control. After having the tower boss chew my ass out for a few minutes now I'm all flustered as I have to now depart the airport after I go my log book signed. While I'm talking to ground I accidentally busted the active runway without clearance to do so, like I said I was flustered when I jumped into the airplane on departure and my head wasn't in the game. NOW THE TOWER BOSS IS YELLING AT ME OVER THE RADIO!!! I finally got out of there and on my way back to my home field I had to cross over a class C airport (ABE) and I'm still flustered while I'm talking to ABE approach control I asked if I have permission to enter their class C as the controller was really snarky with the whole time. Now at this point I'm all super vigilant and trying not to make another stupid mistake. I think he was talking to the controller from RDG. When I finally got to my home field and eventually got home I had a migraine headache from hell for the rest of the day. Ever since then I was really gun shy of controlled airports, but I did fly into some later on for the rest of my training completely uneventful, but what a learning experience that was. My saving grace was that I was student pilot and I think they just swept some things under the rug in the name of a newbie pilot. That was 25 years ago and I'm presently what you would consider a rusty pilot out of the cockpit for a few years. Getting back into the cockpit and restarting at you guessed it a class C airport this time around in the spring.

One fact.. control air space 🌌. Is designed for safe A to B transportation nothing more. You are flying to get there so you can land there job is to land you in order with separation. Keeping that in mind should make it less stressful... At least I keep telling me that lol I think with experience it gets easier. Hey Trent, been watching you for a while now. Flying airlines myself over 12 yrs now. You actually did pretty well, so don't fret. But as Darren Keast wrote, don't actively avoid ATC. How did you get good at landing up a (to me) vertical hill? PRACTICE ! So fly in controlled airspace and practice. Consider this : ATC are there to work WITH you, not against you. They are there to help you. Read back essentials, headings, altitudes, instructions. If you're VFR in a small airplane and fly into a large airport, they know you're not an airline pilot doing this 900 hrs a year. And if you're unsure, ask for a say again. There is no shame in that. Just as the term UNABLE. ATC will accommodate just about anything as long as you tell them in advance. Don't want to take off because you're unsure about wakes? Tell them as you are taxiing to the holding point that you'd like to wait 2 minutes. They'll see that it happens. On final if you feel you're blocking traffic, as soon as you switch to approach or tower, tell them the speed you can and will be doing. They can plan better. Your experimental might be a bushplane, might just as well be a velocity xlrg approaching at 180 kts. So speak to them. If you have to, use plain language to get your info across, especially if things go non-standard. Be safe, not ashamed.

I've seen a lot of videos that say they are told to call a number after they land. I know that means they are in trouble, but with whom are they speaking and what kind of trouble are they in? Really great video, Trent. But man, relax! You did fine. But! First of all, you're VFR so you don't have to repeat everything the controller says word for word, nor are you required to say your call sign every time. A simple, "Roger, Eight Juliet Juliet" would suffice for most of those ATC transmissions that you felt needed a response. Most GA pilots think they have to repeat everything the controller says verbatim; it just clutters up the freq.

You talk at the start about the others you fly with also being apprehensive about flying in controlled airspace and talking on radios, so you steer clear. This means as time goes on your saturation point will become lower. Why not go out with one of these friends in the same aircraft and take turns - one flies, the other works the radios, then switch. You’re comfort level will increase quickly when you’re only concentrating on one thing, whether that be flying the aircraft or dealing with the radio. Eventually you’ll get your groove back.

You're doing just fine. Everyone gets intimidated flying in and out of controlled airports. I fly out of one under the Bravo curtain. I'm so used to talking to tower that I get intimidated in uncontrolled airports. Great video though and I'm glad you made it. There's been a great push recently for pilots to share their mistakes and weaknesses and I love it. We're human and not perfect, but as pilots we all try to make people think we are. Thank you for sharing this.

LOL, You did great man. Talking on the radio was probably the most intimidating part of flight training for me. Flying in Socal busy airspace you've got no choice but to talk someone over the radio while your right hand is constantly pushing buttons to change frequencies. Intimidating at first but you learn to pick things up in no time.

Love it Trent....the honesty and transparency around being nervous talking on the radios and how you captured that. Many people should be able to relate to this. I fly in and out of the busy DFW Bravo airspace and come across pilots all the time that are uncomfortable or intimidated on the radios. You did a great job showing this "live". Great work on this video!

@CorbinAviation
@CorbinAviation 4 жыл бұрын
@@samuelsmith4813 Close but that won't quite get you by. That is actually part of the issue as people believe they have to read back what they were given. Especially in a busy class B. For instance, you wouldn't read back the winds that were given to him; as he knew wasn't needed. If you read back everything you were given you'd really add too much to the transmission. You wouldn't read back "watch for wake turbulence". Another example, when told to "Ident" you wouldn't need to read that back.....you would just Ident. That would be your way of communicating it back. Lots of other examples where you don't need to read back what you are given.

Absolutely!!! However, trying to get it out of my tongue-twisted mouth while trying not to hyperventilate because of nervousness...that takes it to a much more complicated level. Sometimes, I just want to make it back home to my little airport without crying.

I learned in class C, but now days, flying 99.9% in the backcountry/off-airport etc. I feel the exact same way. Much rather face a short landing on a hill than deal with ATC.... lol.... funny how that works. I force myself to do the same thing you did now and then and it does help.... but it also gives me a headache and high blood pressure and I'm sure shaves my life expectancy down a bit!
