Because in South Africa, mixed people are not considered black or white. They’re a whole different race, known as colored. They have their own culture. So, Trevor was not considered black until he came to America. Since he never felt like he belonged with any group, (he looked cored but grew up black with people who saw him as different), that’s why he was excited to come to America where he can be called what he saw himself as, Black.

@@amarachianyim colored are mixed - biracial. Coloured are from parents whom are both coloured. Americans who were mixed were historically called colored, but today they are just black. Trevor appears to be coloured like us, but he's colored-biracial and therefore he is black in America but in SA he can just tick other as a race classification lol, but he's proud to be black!
