Conservatives demand “civility” in an attempt to silence critics of the Trump administration, and Trevor points out that calls for civility tend to come from people in positions of privilege.

Show some civility? Just like Trump is showing civility in his tweets and rallies? SMH. Talk of hypocrisy.
@genericfuton7750
@genericfuton7750 6 жыл бұрын
The irony of that stance is that by arguing against their call for civility you lose the ground to criticize Trump for not having it without becoming a hypocrite. I detest Trump's personality, his politics, and the way he treats people. However I also think that they as people should be treated with maturity and civility the same way I would treat anyone whether I like or dislike them, whether I agree or disagree with them. When I was a child I would lash out and insult and just try to hurt people if I didn't like them or they upset me...but then I grew and realized that that only diminishes myself and makes me someone I don't like.

Generic Futon You have to adapt and be willing to change tactics in order to win. That's why conservatives have won and Trump is president. They upped their game. If you choose to stay the course of civility against the opposition now, you're only ensuring more of the same. The right play is to adapt, and then one-up.
@genericfuton7750
@genericfuton7750 6 жыл бұрын
The opposition has taken the tactic of slinging mud since the beginning...and it is why they lost. Instead of showing why they are great for America they instead try to win by saying Trump is bad. By staying the course of escalation of deteriorating civility they are continuing to stubbornly use the same failure of a tactic they have been attempting for 2 years now. It is time to adapt and to stop bashing the opposition and instead show a better option, not more of the same garbage that we have (garbage is a reference to Trump administration).
@eudofia
@eudofia 6 жыл бұрын
Generic Futon: The better option will be to have a president who is civil, who doesn't use Twitter to berate and attack everyone. He can be a Republican, Democrat or Independent. Don't believe what conservatives had been saying all along. The economy was doing great, unemployment was trending lower. Yes, wages were flat, but they continue flat. Average gain of 2.8% over the last year is just peanuts. The tax cuts, in my opinion, is irresponsible, just to have bragging rights as the biggest tax cut in the history, which have been proven to be a lie anyway. I mean, you can have some tax cuts, and some cuts on regulations and still have the almost the same effect. The tax cuts have not translated to the big wage growth as it was being sold. Instead they it has been used for executive bonuses, and stock buybacks, hence the surge in the stock market. Also, the cuts are going to cost the country almost $2 trillion. And to make up that deficit, he is proposing all these tariffs, which is actually a tax on consumers. But Trump is selling it as being tough on China, and US allies. A country is not only about the economy, there are other factors too: Education, the arts, sciences, social wellbeing, etc But he seems to ignore the other stuff and just focuses on the money aspect. Don't get me wrong, a strong economy is always good to have, but what about the quality of life. The president of the United States sets the example for the rest of the country to follow. If all he does is to insults, attacks, berates, then we shouldn't expect a call for civility from others, and not from the leader himself.

And yes my grammar was off, my apologies since I'm quite positive that will be mentioned. As far as who I voted for? No one, because every candidate was utter garbage. I exercised my right not to vote. Pay attention to those tariffs that are being implemented, watch as prices rise across the board. Sounds good from up top, but when suppliers who bought Chinese get hit with higher costs it will filter down to the common man and woman where the pain will truly be felt. The people suffer while the government thinks they put one over on China. All those policies we pulled out of...no country will ever trust us to keep our word again, regardless of who is elected next. God Bless America.

This just goes to show you that there will always be those who think "You're being too mean." when you protest. But as long as you are non-violent their is no such thing as "too mean." All protests, regardless of history, where met by push back. What makes a protest strong is the fact that despite the pushback you keep the protest strong. That's what has the GOP so scared. They know if they don't put a stop to these protests then they'll get overwhelmed by them. Don't stop protesting just because someone's feelings get hurt. That's nothing compared to what the protesters themselves have to go through.

@@IchCharacter people of the government are not private citizens and no one has went to their house to protest their policies. Rather, in a public setting, they were protested, which is protected since in the US, we have freedom of speach and the right to participate in the political system. Regardless of what political party the person belongs to, we are allowed to voice our opinions to those in all forms of government, as as you don't harrass them. In this situation, everything was done right. You can't apply policies and laws and not have people react to them. Being in government is not a 9 to 5 job. People are effected regardless of the time.

@Fadwa Ashur Harassing people and denying them service outside of work hours is not a question of freedom of speech, especially not if they go into a restaurant with their family. That's not just protesting either, that's simply uncalled for. The restaurant owners are in luck that their state allows discrimination based on political affiliation, otherwise they'd be sued to hell and back, rightfully so, in my opinion. Regardless, I wouldn't consider this acceptable political discourse, especially if a press secretary is attacked, a person that merely conveys information instead of making political decisions themselves. If you don't agree, I suppose you think it's also fine to throw out politicians that try to work towards racial equality and all that because of political view?. Maybe also writers for newspapers if you don't agree with their publisher, because why not?

IchCharacter Personally, I believe in the right of everyone to refuse service. As a gay person, I’d like to maintain the right to refuse to serve a blatantly homophobic person in my place of business. If I went into an extremely homophobic place of business and they knew I was gay for some reason, I’d expect to be kicked out. If you owned a business (or if you do) I think you’d appreciate having the right to refuse service. While we might not agree with the way everyone exercises this right, I believe it’s better to have it in place than to attempt to restrict it based off of our own personal senses of morality. I understand you don’t think it’s civil to refuse service based on political opinion, but imagine if you ran a restaurant and a group sporting red arm bands came in. Personally, I’d be thankful to have the right to refuse them service because I disagree with their political opinions.
@IchCharacter
@IchCharacter 5 жыл бұрын
Gina Cuba So, if I were a racist, why shouldn't I be allowed to refuse service to black people? I thought we were over segregation and such, but I guess some people wouldn't mind having it back. Political opinions should be no more grounds for discrimination than religious beliefs or skin color. I believe it's part of being adult to tolerate people with different opinions and interact with them, even if you don't like what they have to say. I would consider it childish to refuse someone service, even if that person said terrible things about me or any group I'm a part of or associate myself with. I wouldn't give them a minute of my private time, but refusing someone service over such nonsense is rather stupid and only serves to fuel the deepening divide in American society. If you want another civil war, that might be the way to go, but I don't think a lot of people do. Unless the person in question is committing a crime with their statements, I don't think there are any grounds for refusing them service.

Actually, the owner of the Red Hen was quite polite with Ms. Sanders. She informed her privately of the decision to ask her to leave and gave her the staff consensus reasons for doing so. She also did not ask her party to leave. The entire event was quite civil and polite. Also, the protest at Ms. Nielsen's meal in the Mexican Restaurant, while more dramatic and vocal, went down without any violence. Donald Trump, on the other hand has been filmed repeatedly encouraging his supporters to beat people up. Why do I feel confused about the definition of public civility...or is it only the administrative elite who are supposed to be given deferential treatment when they act with inhumane impunity?

How come no one in her family recorded any of this? Why haven't any witnesses confirmed this story or recorded it? Surely if the owner followed Huckabee outside and "organized a protest" [sic], like her dad claims, there'd be witnesses to such a scene? All you have is her dad's lies (he could be repeating his daughter's lies for all we know), and oh look: all three media carrying this story, The Washington Times, Mediaite and Laura Ingram have no evidence either. They're just repeating Mike Huckabee's claim. Zero corroborating evidence from elsewhere. Just the usual right wing rumor circle jerk. Don't get me wrong: it could have happened, but I repeat: [citation needed]

Slava Botcharnikov There is a lot of evidence (mostly in writings aside from the dead sea scrolls) that suggests that Jesus was indeed real. @genericfuton7750
@genericfuton7750 6 жыл бұрын
The constitution applies to government not private actions, but ultimately my arguments are not about laws but about behavior. What I am saying is that the act of discrimination is a dangerous act because it can lead to many dark places. In history we have examples of political discrimination achieving as bad of results as religious discrimination. The red scare was not to long ago and led to many lives being ruined over political discourse. In many countries today people are victimized based of political beliefs. In my work I work with people who have fled there countries due to political persecution and seek asylum. You are speaking from a place of privilege in that you live in a country where currently political differences do not mean your life is at risk, but that can quickly change and has happened in the past when people have believed that they were right and it was justified to silence the opposition. So no I am not being intellectually dishonest, I am being consistent in the fact that I recognize that discrimination in all its forms if a potentially deadly action and allowing this to escalate should scare the shit out of people.

Alrighty then. It's just fine and dandy for any bakery to refuse a customer who wants a wedding cake because, for their own moral and ethical reasons, the baker does not approve of the wedding. Meaning you are making argument that if person is born with it(or it has been made permanent in other ways) then you cant use that to discriminate against him/her? Wouldnt pedophiles also then fall under that "do not discriminate"-group? They cant change themselves any more than gays can(Even though both groups have their own "treatment/conversion" programs) "immoral government administration"

it's a question of who would win the world's sympathy you know. as the world as a whole is moving towards empathy being a ruling force, as more people get educated and more people get a right to speak out and make a difference, we will see the people in extreme power and riches become more and more disliked as all that wealth came from others that did the work to create the products for it, and they are living horrifically in comparison to the person who essentially scammed them for the worth of their work. humans will either die out or eventually move into a future where the people has vastly more power than the individuals in high positions. as educated people want freedom to enjoy their lives and with freedom comes the ability to act against what you see as wrong, which develop your empathy, and with empathy comes the fact that looking at someone that made hundreds of millions of the back of people who are starving and dying horrifically because they lack the basic resources to survive, partly because they are vastly underpaid compared to the profit that they are using their time and ability to create; the victims who got massively scammed for the worth of their work, which made the individual incredible rich by either overpricing when selling, scamming the consumers, or underpaying when buying, scamming the seller, from the people who actually made it.

You mean the two black men who won their lawsuit and had the majority of the population support them and have become famous for it? Surely the brief time they were arrested has ruined their life and made it worse than all the fame and attention has benefited them. Not touching the cake argument because I personally don't like refusing service for such reasons....but I'm consistent in that I think ALL people should show tolerance and maturity. You do realize that by using those moments of intolerance to justify further intolerance you ARE justifying those moments too. This is not a good situation as the other side will see this and eventually decide to say 'eff it' and retaliate...which then will cause this side to retaliate...and a spiral of escalation will eventually start....and then there will be someone shooting up a congressional baseball game aiming at politicians.....again...

If there was a way to communicate with the right in a way that helped them empathise with people outside of their perceived groups, America would become a much better place. A lot of people will shit talk the right, but that helps no-one. They need to be made to feel included. That's when they will start to care what happens to others, as they will see themselves in these groups that they would otherwise feel no connection to. And yeah, I'm just as much of a hypocrite as anyone else, sometimes.

Sweetteawillie never pretend words are meaningless. If anyone has ever told you "thank you" or " I love you", you'll know that words have meaning. Rioters are rioters. No normal person likes rioters. It's a lie to pretend an entire political wing supports riots. Protests are a defended right, and people were mostly offended by that speakers call for 'Bloodless ethnic cleansing" to remove non-whites from the US, (and Europe in some circles.) That's why they were heavily protested. Any Ethnic Cleansing is a dangerous 'different view'. Riots are a separate despicable issue.

So if I have this correctly you can refuse to make a cake because of religious beliefs but not refuse service because of any others beliefs? If they had made Sarah leave for religious reasons would that have been different?
@cadenbigler
@cadenbigler 6 жыл бұрын
dragonsangel7777 Do you not understand the difference between Masterpiece cakeshop vs Colorado and this? Masterpiece cakeshop was an artistic representation, they would sell anything to the gay couple in the store so long as they weren't forced to make a wedding cake specifically for their gay wedding. in fact they would bake a normal cake, they just wouldn't artistically decorate the cake in the fashion that they wished. This is a completely different matter, you can't deny service to someone when that service is available to everyone else. There's a clear difference between these two cases.

Caden Bigler of course there are differences but there are also simularaties. Refusing service is refusing service

That’s because the protection of religious freedoms is in the constitution. To refuse service to people you don’t like is not in the constitution and is more like a form of segregation.

Political beliefs are not a protected class. So the comparison isn't exactly equal. That being said an establishment can feel free to roll the dice on that and see what happens. I'm guessing an fancy little restaurant can survive politely asking a Republican Administration official to leave far more easily than some establishment that tries it with race or sexual orientation. Even the baker would have had to sell them pre-made products and I believe only was able to deny on the custom made cake.

Poon Jutsu Even though it seems repetitive, keeping Stephen Miller in the spotlight and held accountable is probably a good thing. Miller's clearly wanting to fill the Goebbels-esque background role that Bannon left. Sunlight's the best disinfectant.
