US cheat sheet (from a random American): *Napkin: A small, sometimes folded paper based product, primarily used for wiping your hands after a meal; Not to be confused with "sanitary napkin"; please see "pad" and "diaper" respectively *Paper towels: a roll of rectangular, paper sheets; can used in a similar fashion to napkins, but are often more specifically designed for wiping up messes from surfaces, and are larger than napkins *Tissue: Single use paper product squares that maybe similar-sized to napkins, but are MUCH softer and sometimes thicker, as they are designed for more "sensitive" areas or uses, like drying your tears or blowing your nose; will sometimes be referred to as "Kleenex" as this is a company that produces tissue, and has become synonymous with the product; sometimes called "facial tissue" on packaging; Not to be confused with "toilet tissue"; DO NOT FLUSH DOWN A TOILET!; please see "toilet paper" *Pad: A feminine product, usually made of cloth or cotton/ plastic adhesive backing, that affixes to the gusset of one's underwear to catch menstrual fluid; can either be reusable or disposable, but disposable products are most common; sometimes will be referred to as "sanitary napkins" on packaging, but this usage could be considered outdated or too formal in everyday conversation; one would likely never hear it, with the preferred term being "pad" (or more formally, "menstrual pad"); the adjective "sanitary" is required to make the distinction between a pad and ordinary napkins *Diaper: A baby product used to catch human excrement and urine until one is "potty-trained"/ knows how to use a toilet; can be made either of cloth or cotton /plastic; similar to a pad in that it can either be reusable or disposable, with again, disposable being the most common; would never be referred to as a "napkin", although you may rarely hear the slang term "Napie" or "Nappy" used for a diaper, or at the very least, a number of Americans would recognize this as a term for "diaper" used elsewhere, and would understand the meaning *Toilet paper: A roll of small, paper product squares used to wipe oneself after using the toilet; Unlike "tissue" specifically designed to break down in water and be flushed down a toilet (regular "tissue" is produced differently, isn't always safe to flush down the toilet); may also be referred to by the slang term, "TP"; sometimes will be referred to as "toilet tissue" on packaging, but it's usage is similar to that of "sanitary napkins" for "pads", although one may hear "toilet tissue" slightly more often in everyday conversation; Again, the adjective here, in this case "toilet", is needed to make the distinction between "toilet paper" and "tissue" when using the term, "toilet tissue" Ah, the glorious ways different countries will use the same word to mean something else, and the hilarious hijinx that ensue from misunderstandings XD
