.....and now DCC reckons it’s innovative with a variety of sounds locos can make!! I think Dapol years ago made a sound unit way before electronics became so popular! Give me these models you have Oscar, and the myriad of under-board wiring! Another great video!

We owe so much to Triang Their models were robust and made for good play value. Whilst not sophisticated like true railway modeller liked, they could be detailed. What they did do extremely well is to provide just about every one I know the entry into railway modelling. Things have changed today, Hornby models are so accurate. I don't thing the models of today will have the longevity of the models from the 60s.

Well said Steven. My recently purchased class 71 electro-diesel had its pantograph torn away from the body running it under my old Hornby catenary overhead wires due to the fine nature, detail and fragility of the pantograph.

Hi Maurice, that's sound like a painful accident. I have examples of the Hornby Class 86, 90 and 91 from the late 80s early 90s and have noticed a similar problem with the pantographs. They seem to have been designed with hard edges on the pantograph skate. This just catches on the clips in the overhead, causing damage to both catenary and pantographs. It seems an odd design flaw as the had reintroduced the catenary system at this point to support these models. And there is no difference between the clips used in the sixties and those reintroduced. Poor planning and a lost opportunity on their part. Oscar

Another great video Oscar,.. I had, the Princess Elizabeth back in 1967 or 68 but without the Chuff Chuff sound, indeed, I still have it. I also still have that 1971 catalogue you are referring to. I always enjoyed looking for "the mouse" in the Cuneo cover painting.

This takes me back a few decades. I had the LNER Flying Scotsman with chuff chuff and glowing smoke box. The old power clip you saw was from the old triang track which had fishplates on the opposite rails to how it is now. I think the old track was called Super 4 and it changed to system 6. You could also buy adapter tracks to use both sets of tracks on the same layout. They had fishplates on the same side.

Who needs DCC Sound modules, when all you need is a bit of bent copper spring clip and a plastic box to go inside the tender. This system could quite simply be made to fit in any non motorised tender. The worst thing Hornby ever did, was to start putting motors in tenders of steam locos. You cant beat loco driven models.
@oscarpaisley6 жыл бұрын
I think it was one of those controversial moves. It upset a lot of people, and many welcomed the move. I have to say for me it always looks wrong when the models are in motion. But then they are very smooth running and at the time I think other manufactures had smother running systems available. Development more/improved pickups could have helped Tri-ang Hornby out here I think, although they were working on this as well. But I don't think they put quite the effort into this that they could have especially in the models of steam locomotives. Changing traction tyers is also a pain. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment, it's hugely appreciated. Oscar
@muir80095 жыл бұрын
know it's a bit late to jump into the conversation, from what I can gather the onus for hornby to go to tender drive was rather unfair comparisons to the European stuff, especially Fleischmann. unfortunately the general public clamouring for tender drive appear to have failed to factor in Fleischmann was expensive high quality not necessarily aimed at a younger clientele. poor hornby were trying to replicate the Fleischmann arrangement at a budget, and skipping the impeccable quality. the result ended up less than impressive. the sound box seems to be a redo of Lionel's standard gauge system from the thirties. Oscar does really wonderful videos doesn't he? and the way he narrates it's like you're in the same room just talking trains.

I have a Triang Britannia (R259) with smoke unit. Do you think I would be ruining it’s future price by adding a sound exhaust box into her tender?
@oscarpaisley4 жыл бұрын
Hi. I think the Britannia may have been available with the sound box in the earl 70s so there is probably room inside the tender without doing any damage. Sound like a good project. However items in there original condition always seem to have a greater price. So it depends on your longer term plans for the model really, but think of the fun you will get from putting the sound box in and the running afterwords, it probably out-ways any future value of the model. Thanks again for watching. Oscar
