The Coronation was out of production when I was building up my railway as a teenager (late 70s). Fortunately I managed to find a maroon body and tender and put it on a Flying Scotsman chassis, which I painted the wheels of as they were green originally. It ran very well though the tender always seemed a little unstable.

Good morning Robert, sounds like it was a great project. I think the tenders do tend to run a little crudely on the rails I think the tender base is ex Hornby Dublo/Wrenn and they do seem a little top heavy. Thanks again take care. Oscar

Hi Oscar. A lovely loco , and it runs extremely well and quiet. I have the same loco but I think that mine is called King George VI , not sure. I also have three others in blue as well. Coronation, princess Alexandra and Queen Mary. I also have two in Maroon and two in wartime black. I also have 11 blue coaches and the Maroon set as well. So I think that I have it covered when it comes to streamlined Duchesses. I also have eight rebuilt versions to , two of each colour. I have a lovely softback book which goes into great detail about the design of these locomotives. I recommend that you buy it. The 'wings' as you call them are actually called valances and yes they are all part of the streamlined effect. On the real thing they had a stretchy canvass between each coach which was the same colour as the train for aerodynamics and looks. The front buffers should be painted silver and there were these little lights that used to sit on top of them and in keeping with the art deco theme they had little silver wings on them , nice touch. Your layout looks nice and has plenty of pointwork. The loco performed faultlessly. I couldn't believe the price tag on those coaches , I wish that they were still that price. I might buy some more. Good video , lovely loco. Regards.

I had this when I was a kid In a set. I’m not sure what year but it must have been the 90s and I’ve just bought the exact set this morning. Good condition all the contents in the box for £159. I think that’s not a bad price. I’m so excited.

Absolutely gorgeous Oscar. I have the R.871 Maroon version but no coaches so I rarely run it. David.

Thanks, David it's a shame those coaches were not made earlier. I think there are many who would have bought them over the years. Oscar

Quite a good looking locomotive, and interesting information about how delicate the body is held onto the chassis. And when coupled to those coaches, a real eye catcher. Interesting too Oscar is the price tag of five quid on R423, there’s one on eBay for £20! Great video as always!

Hi Oscar, I bought some hornby coaches recently to match my t/h coronation loco. I then bought some China made models and was surprised they were not the same height. So went and bought a China made coronation. Got two trains now. I hate to say I have strayed off the triang/hornby models but the difference in "toys" and present day models is quite noticeable. I guess one could say that t/h were very advanced considering they are models from half a century ago in some cases!.regards Lee

Good morning Lee, I think there are always excuses to acquire another set of models. I did go on to purchase the 1984 Hornby version of the Coronation! just because it went with the coaches from that period. I think all these toys deliver a great amount of detail for the production time. Production technology and materials so far advanced now. But as you suggest I think they are now scale models rather than toys. Thanks again Lee for watching and leaving such a great comment. Oscar Paisley

Lovely presentation of one of those that never really achieved its potential and I think you have the reason down pat, no matching stock. Seeing others comment on the tender, the axleboxes do look as if they are filled in version of the old open axleboxes, unless the prototype looked like that too of course! Again, one of those where the line bertween toy and model blurred at the time, and is still convincing today.
@oscarpaisley6 жыл бұрын
Good afternoon Andrew. Have a look at the catalogue page at the end of the video (P5- 1970). It shows the tender with the open axle boxes. If you look closely at the lining were it sweeps down the front end you can see where the foil lining has been applied and cut. Maybe a two-part lining transfer/Hand finished? its got to be a pre-production model in that picture. Definitely lost potential with this model and the R.871 King Goerge. The tooling costs must have been astronomically for appropriate coaching stock. People have suggested in what I've read that the moulds for the old 9in mainline coaches moulded in the appropriate colours should have been used. This could have been one of those great Tri-ang workarounds ( Right colour with wheels it will do!) I imagen that the big stumbling block was the lining even if they had developed a new model. Getting it to run across all those windows. The anticipated failure rate in production may have just been too great in those times of economic trouble. It would be nice now more. Thanks again for watching and taking the time to comment. Oscar

Hi Oscar, I have just purchased some China made coaches to run with this (Margate) set and I have found the ride height of coaches is different. I guess as a purist you would not have come across this ,just an observation.Great video.
@oscarpaisley6 жыл бұрын
Hi Lee The coaches I have are Hornby Railways 80's made in Margate the stripes don't quite match the locomotive but the couplings seem to. These things were made at different times and places with differing technology. Oscar

mark sandspencer I have 80’s blue coaches cost a fortune yes they are higher, I have a couple of Chinese coaches so you nick the bogies of 80’s maroon and silver roofed 57’ Staniers

Lovely looking loco. I like the high gloss finish of these models . I didn’t realise it at the time but an issue with these locos is they are actually too short. I’ve got one of the much more recent Hornby ones which is the correct length but somehow with it’s Matt finish isn’t as attractive as these early models.
@oscarpaisley6 жыл бұрын
I think they had trouble with the overhang of the front bogies. Even when they revisited the model in the early 80's they fiddled with it but decided to go with the earlier body moulding. Does your contemporary model cope with first radius curves? The new model is a fine looking thing. Oscar
@russellbenton29876 жыл бұрын
Oscar Paisley I updated my layout so the minimum is second radius . I don’t think it would cope well with first radius
@pp379035 жыл бұрын
@@oscarpaisley I think they also used the same chassis on multiple locos.

Why did British Loco's never have headlights??
@oscarpaisley4 жыл бұрын
Hi I have to admit I don’t know the answer to that but from the little I’ve read about the subject it seems that headlights as such were not required on British locomotives as signalling cleared the way for them. Driver forward vision very limited even to see the area Illuminated by a potential headlight, So unlikely to be able to react to what was seen within that area. Crew relying on the signalling to control the train rather than out right forward vision. I think forward and rear lighting on British trains helps identify direction of travel and Service. Thanks for watching. Oscar
