Fascinating Oscar. You disassembled model very assuredly whereas I’d have a lot more trepidation . Was surprised you clean chassis with hot soapy water . I thought that might result in rust and have always avoided using water on my models . What a great reassembly job . Lots of great tips in there

Thanks Russell, I was always wary of using water at first someone suggested it at the model railway shop(now closed) some time ago. I've also washed a lot of track before using it on the layout with warm soapy water with good results. I think the drying part is important to avoid any rusting. I’ve had a few of these princesses over the years, I even picked up a battered one last summer for 50p. Years ago I had a bash at kit building, kit bashing and scratch building, I found the wheelbase of the princess chassis to be the same as the class A5 GCR (LNER) and the A8 NER (LNER) so I used the chassis for the basis of these models. If you wish to aftermarket wheels with 1/8” axles, then Alan Gibson frame bushes (if they’re still the same dimensions) are an interference fit into the Triang chassis, enabling you to fit finer scale wheels.

I'm in the process of cleaning up a Princess with a red body and black ash box. It has a hairline crack in the footplate but is otherwise in pretty good condition. Somebody has done a bodge job on soldering the resistor and wires to the pickup and brush arm, but that's just cosmetic (although as an electronics technician I will clean that up). I had some runout on the rear axle, so it looked like it might have been dropped, but squeezing the two wheels together between my thumbs and forefingers at the maximum runout point fixed it up nicely. You provided some nice tips here, but I was thinking that an ultasonic cleaner might be the go for the block cleanup. I don't have one, but I intend to get one. I picked up a nice little Connie (yellow 0-4-0) with the Pricess and will give that a clean too.

WOW What a great video that was, I had a princess back in 1956, I remember taking it apart in the 60's as one of the drive wheels went wonkky, then girlsgot in the way. So tell me, is it possiable to replace or aline the wheels (I've since accured three more princess's and I'd like to get all four running, again thanks for the HOW TO DO video...Iddy
@oscarpaisley4 жыл бұрын
God morning Idris, great to hear you found the video interesting, wonky wheels can be relatively easily usually by removing the wheels on the insulated side these are the one that are most often at fault as they are pushed onto a plastic insulating bush which has some flexibility in it but not much especially as they are rather old now you easy these wheels off, the bush normal brakes when you do this. Its not recommended that you reuse the old bush as that is part of the original problem. www.hornbyguide.com/service_sheet_details.asp?sheetid=153 looking at the service sheet you will see the bush is part S5065 these can be found on that we know auction site. Carefully refit the wheels with the new bushes making sure they are inline and not wonky. This is where the slight flexibility of the bushes help as adjustments can be made. Remember the to keep an eye on the quartering so the model runs smoothly when reassembled. Barrie Davis has some great videos on kzbin.info/door/hVzVVov7HJOrrZ6HRvV2GAsearch?query=quartering If the wheels are out of true on the none insulated side or the axels are bent replacement wheel my be the way to go, you will still need the insulating bushes. Thanks for watching hope this was of some help. Stay safe. Oscar

Again Oscar ,, Thaks a heap ,, a very helpful video especially the insulating plate on the base of the engine ,, Q.. What is this made of is it cardboard ? Also ,, where about do you get the fibreglass pen from that you used to clean the copper wipers that pick up current from the wheels ? Cheers from John in Australia.
@oscarpaisley3 жыл бұрын
Hello again John, I have to admit to not knowing the name of the material used on the collection plate it can look quite fibrous on one side and shiny on the other on the early models and is often brown later and is quite ridged later models it looks to be more of a plastic-type materials and I have and some of my 0-4-0 Nellie/Polly industrial type models have a quite bendy thin material used. so I think they may have used several different products to make these collection plates over the years. It just has to be insulating. The fibreglass pen is from the jewellery industry I think but are used by modelers to there are a number of options if you search "Fibre Glass Scratch Pencil Brush Clean" on that well know aution site or market place it should point you in the right direction. Thanks agin take care. Oscar

Really good to watch you service that loco Oscar. I have Princess Victoria with solid wheels, I would love to date it, it has two blood and custard coaches with it. Any clues as to what I could look for to try and date it.? I am thinking around 1960. it runs very well but could do with a tender respray and a tiny repair on the front buffer beam.
@oscarpaisley5 жыл бұрын
Hi Philip, it could have been an R3A set in 1959 or the RS1 set in 1960 to about 1962. Both these sets had the Princess Victoria although the R3A started life with Princess Elizabeth. Oscar

Oscar I have an old triang princess that I’m attempting to get working . I have a confusing issue that I hope you can help with. I’ve replaced damaged wheels , new pickups , new motor brushes and given everything a good service. The problem I’m having is if I put power directly to the motor it runs strong in both directions but as soon as I connect all the wiring and put it on the track I’m not getting any power. I’ve tested my other locos on the same track and they work fine. Any ideas as frankly I’m stumped as to what’s wrong
@oscarpaisley3 жыл бұрын
Good morning Mark sounds like the power is not finding its way to the motor. I would check you have the wheel in the correct way round, the insulated ones should be on the side with the pickups. Also, remove the collection plate with the pickups on, the wire solder joint to the pickup can break over time and leave the model without power when all else looks fine. Hope this was of some help. Take care. Oscar
@timhoward70373 жыл бұрын
Hopefully you solved this by now, but if not it's worth connecting the wiring, sitting the loco on track, and still applying power to the motor brushes. If there is any kind of short due to wiring or wheels not installed correctly the motor won't move. If the motor does move then as per other comment it's a pickup or wiring issue. I just serviced one of these today, they are pretty bullet-proof and I'm sure you'll get it working.
