A global phenomenon that has wowed audiences for over 40 years, Jesus Christ Superstar is a timeless work set against the backdrop of an extraordinary and universally-known series of events but seen, unusually, through the eyes of Judas Iscariot.
It was the first musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice to be produced for the professional stage and first came to major theatres when it debuted on Broadway in October 1971 at the Mark Hellinger Theatre in New York.
Less than 12 months after the Broadway show opened, the rock spectacle went to London, exploding onto the West End at the Palace Theatre in August 1972 in a hugely successful production. By 1980, after 3,358 performances, Jesus Christ Superstar had become the longest running musical in West End history at the time and grossed $12.3 million.
In all, Jesus Christ Superstar has grossed over $205 million and has been professionally produced in 42 countries around the world!

In real life, Pilate would have had no reason whatsoever to forgive a Jewish insurgent. Pilate was known to be a brutal governor in the typical Roman way. Jesus was an itinerant apocalyptic preacher, like John the Baptist, and they all preached that Rome would be destroyed by the Lord. Of course, it wasn’t. It was Jerusalem that was destroyed by the Romans, in 70 CE. This scene is based on the Gospel According to John, which was the latest-written of the Gospels. It is markedly different from the three other Gospels. It is extremely anti-Semitic, when in fact the Romans killed Jesus of Nazareth.

@@Tina06019 The whole scene of the gospels makes no sense from a historiographic point of view. Not only the death of Jesus would have been wholly on account of Roman Authorities but Jerusalem religious authorities did have indeed authority to put locals to death without much issue on accounts such as blasphemy (the Romans would have had no issue on local authorities exercising their own laws as long as those would not interfere with their own authority or tax collecting). But then, the Religion of Paul about Jesus had an imperative of not only separating itself from the religions of the Jews, but also to not appear antagonistic to the Roman authorities in territories of the Roman empire. And from such a simple need we have a... host of very very unfortunate and to be fair fully impossible to foresee consequences in the centuries following. In any case, it's not just John, but the 'Blood Curse' passage in Matthew (Mat 27 24-25) wich is also partcularly and incredibly vindictive against jews (also outright impossible to believe actual jews would have said such a thing in such circunstances), and obviously you can gather a collection of clearly antijewish passages all over the New Testament, not only in Matthew and John, but also more implied in the other two, and then in particular passages of Paul's letters (like Thes: 2:14-16 which has outright the accusation of god killers, when, again if anybody would be guilty of that, would be the Roman authorities).

Also the crowd was pushing to see how far they can mess with the authority if they mob up enough with a really shoddy reason. This could have gone extremely wrong if Pilate just flogged the crowd instead to show them a real example of being actually occupied. This mob method would not work kindly when Caligula and Nero was in office and they would pay it the hard way.

I'm hardly a history expert, but from what I'm finding, there were some propaganda efforts in the early 300s (the years leading up to the Council of Nicaea, in which the tenets of Christianity were formalised) from both Romano-Christian apologists and Roman polytheists for the exoneration of Pilate, but those were centuries after the Gospels were written (70-110), which are what the musical text is almost entirely based upon. Philo of Alexandria, a philosopher contemporary to Pilate, does argue the "Pilate as brutal dictator" angle, but he does not comment on Pilate's actions in this case, and this angle is not supported by the other major non-biblical contemporary account of Pilate's actions, by the historian Flavius Josephus, who describes Pilate in much more neutral terms and even explicitly supports the Biblical narrative that Pilate only condemned Jesus to crucifixion at the prodding of the Jewish authorities. Additionally, generally speaking, the Roman punitive system did indeed typically require a conclusive verdict of an acknowledged crime for an execution, but on the other hand, mass crucifixions of rebels were known to happen as a way of brutally maintaining social order following an uprising. Ultimately, it seems like both in the biblical and non-biblical records, Pilate's motivations and behaviour with respect to Jesus are very ambiguous, so making big declarative statements on that front are questionable at best.

I feel I had the feeling about Pilate, though my Bible study did kind of pointed out how how much he wanted to avoid killing Jesus, and this scene just encapsulates it all with how he shouts "I need a crime" and how horrified and sorrowful he looks when he washes his hands, with some of Jesus' blood on his face.

I can appreciate what he's trying to do: he's going for a lot of subtext. I think his idea is that Pilate's overly macho forcefulness is all a show he's putting on to appear intimidating to the people around him, but inside Pilate is deeply scared. The "real" Pilate is the one we see during Pilate's Dream, and the rest is an act that Pilate himself is putting on. This is deep stuff that really demonstrates Johanson worked hard at figuring out the character's motivations, but the problem is it's just way too much to get across. It took me multiple viewings to fully understand the subtext he was going for, and without that full understanding, this performance comes across as wildly over the top and inconsistent. Just look at how he acts during the counting of the 39 lashes: his voice keeps switching from being psychotic, sadistic, calm, sympathetic, horrified, all at once, and it changes completely randomly. I think the director needed to reel him in here and there, because the performance is so over the top that the character's motivation gets really muddled.

Although I love Fred Johanson and the other great singers/actor, I much prefer the original. This is far to theatrical and makes to much entertainment of the flogging for my liking. In the orginal the characters were also more even, there was a strong Jesus with more oomp! I liked that. Also even though the songs are the same the have forgotten the orginal question, was Jesus Christ or just a man?

This song and “Pilate and Christ” both help us see the common ground between Judas and Pilate. They both don’t want to hurt Jesus because even though they both know it’s what Jesus wants, they know everyone will blame them. People seem to forget that this production was made to capture the look and feel of a real theater performance. That's why the camera largely stays at one angle and most of the sets are enclosed spaces you could theoretically create on stage. In the same vein, a lot of the singing and the portrayal of characters is done in a way to capture the feel and flamboyance of a theater production of the time. Everyone I know who enjoyed theater from this time and my parents who worked on the actual set of a production of Jesus Christ Superstar all prefer this portrayal over the 1973 film that is clearly more just a musical than any attempt at a theater style performance. The over acting in JCS 2001 and the injection of raw emotions into the singing clearly mimics theater where such things are done to make it easier for an audience watching from a distance to feel the emotion of the characters on stage.

You're showing ME a production, yet you're pretending as if it's being shown to a crowd. It doesn't work. I keep watching this version and finding all kinds of things to talk about. First, Pilate here is terrorizing. His deep voice, his teeth when he sings are almost like fangs. Yet, he looks in so much pain when he can't save him. Some of the words have been changed from the original. Also, it's the people who flog him, they're the real killers. I also like when one of them points to Pilate "leaving him the blame". It's just a whole new way of presenting JCS and I love it. Thank you.

the screaming of the mob into CRUCIFY HIM CRUFCIFY HIM at 2:46 is so raw. pontias pilate one of the most intimidating dudes in this scene and he is visibly scared by this mob. he's enormous, looks like an absolute badass, and his gear implies absolute ruthlessness. he towers over jesus, the pharisees, and everyone else. and yet he is still frightened by the savagery of the crowd he has to deal with. holy smokes, this scene is powerful.

This'll sound weird, but I thought of this portrayal of Pilate as I was watching the character development of Boris Scherbina in Chernobyl. The real Pilate was probably a career military man and politician, and was sent to Jerusalem because it was a hot-bed of revolution and anti-Roman activity. In their mistake, they sent the one good man who could've made a difference. He ultimately did what was required to avert a complete breakdown in law and order, but the sympathetic portrayal of a man on the edge of what he knows is right and what must be done is something very VERY difficult to do. Fun fact: the romans used to whip people 39 times because they thought you'd die at 40, so that's why Pilate only called out to 39

I'm pretty sure they did that to prevent a miscount. They'd stop at 39 so even if the flogger miscounted, you wouldn't receive MORE than 40 lashes.

You're right about the reason why 39 lashes was the limit, but I actually don't think the Romans followed the rule. They also used a horrible scourge with knotted cords and even bits of metal and bone.

It's because 40 lashings was the punishment fit for many crimes. Once you hit 40, any more and you're beating a now innocent man. They counted to 39 to prevent miscounts

I don't think Pilate actually wanted to help Jesus, he just wanted to keep order. And yet he wanted to let Jesus go, only because he saw an injustice being done. His hands were tied and he gave into peer pressure of the crowd driven on by the Pharisees and Sadducees. Admittedly this guy performance was a bit over the top but none the less a powerful one of Pilate.

Pilate had a dream (in the Bible as well as in the musical) about Jesus before he ever met him. He saw everyone blaming him for Jesus's death and it frightened him. You can see in the movie when Jesus stands up and looks at Pilate that he gets a look of remembrance on his face and becomes frightened. That's why at that point he's trying to do everything he can to save Jesus, he doesn't want his dream to come true.

You're wrong. There is none Pilate's dream in Bible, but you can find some words about dream of his wife: "When he was set down on the judgment seat, his wife sent unto him, saying, Have thou nothing to do with that just man: for I have suffered many things this day in a dream because of him" (Matthew 27 : 19)

This version of Pilate seems to really want to help Jesus. After the 39 lashes, he exhibits heartfelt compassion for him. It's a real crisis of conscience for him. That's why I really like this version of Pilate.

I prefer Barry Dennen's more laid back and quiet way of playing Pilate, that made his "don't let me stop your great self destruction" so effective. He got more and more stressed out and then he explodes! This Pilate screamed every other word which made us expect him to scream at the very end. Making it so much less effective

I personally think this is the best performance of this moment. It is an incredibly hard part, being so high in the voice and requiring such an explosion. Most people who sing it have to put it in their mix, and it sounds weak or thin, but this Pilate makes it legitimately frightening when he finally condemns Jesus to die.

I dig the art direction in this version. The post-grunge art nouveau mixture is really cool (and somehow also excudes "early 2000s"). However, I do think I prefer the more subdued 1973 version. That said, the best versions I've seen have been off-Broadway productions, which tend to take a more historic approach to costumes. Although I saw a version once that was a combination of the 1973 and 2000 art styles, and that was a bit confusing.
