He is despised and rejected by men,
A Man of sorrows and acquainted with grief.
And we hid, as it were, our faces from Him;
He was despised, and we did not esteem Him.
Surely He has borne our griefs
And carried our sorrows;
Yet we esteemed Him stricken,
Smitten by God, and afflicted.

But He was wounded for our transgressions,
He was bruised for our iniquities;
The chastisement for our peace was upon Him,
And by His stripes we are healed.

All we like sheep have gone astray;
We have turned, every one, to his own way;
And the LORD has laid on Him the iniquity of us all. ..

Whoever plays Pilate, their acting is so good, his body language is like I don't want to do this, but his words are not. At the end, I thought Pilate screamed in anger, but now I see he was crying and wish the outcome was different.

Pilates wife, never utters a sound through the whole movie, yet she appears in many scenes, her facial and body language says she is certainly a follower of Jesus Christ. at 3:09 you can see her shaking her head and pleading with her eyes to Pilate not to have him flogged. She is so subtle in all her appearances, that so many never even notice her.

I think JC Superstar has done more to bring young people into the fold than 100,000 TV evangelists ever could. Weber and Rice created a truly timeless work that continues to mystify and enlighten.

As someone purely Secular, this whole play is amazing, but this song...man, I love how much it shows the human side of things with Pilate. It was more of a political decision than any hatred. @Bea Ed at least from the perspective of the film (can't speak for any other sources tbh), it was because he silently accepted his fate. Again, people were ready to go to war with the Romans here. The Jewish people were getting tired of being subjugated by everyone and wanted someone to "lead" them, but my interpretation is Jesus was NOT that leader and just wanted to spread a positive message. He didn't want people to die on his account, so he welcomed martyrdom.

It was this scene and this movie that first pointed me to the gospel. I never knew why church was important until that moment. I was nine and my mom would watch this around easter. Before we went to Good Friday Mass, we were at the part where Jesus was getting beaten. I was balling. After, I asked my mom why they did that to him. He didnt do anything wrong. My mom looked at my with tenderness and said, "Honey. Thats the point. He didnt do anything wrong. But he took on our punishment so we can go to heaven." This movie will always hold a special place in my story and my heart.

Except that probably all points to be a complete and utter fabrication. The more the gospels advance in time of original writing, the more the jews are 'guilty'. Nothing points but to the Romans to be the ones who actually executed Jesus (and for their own good reason, Jesus was very obviously a political leader). But since the first christian communities drifted each time more and more from judaism and more and more towards Rome, the fact that their main christ figure had been executed by the Romans was... quite inconvenient. So the later a gospel or a testimony is written the more that somehow the Romans are exonerated, and the more the jews are given the blame. Even when it had its own historical reasons that had nothing to do with it, the fact that this ressulted in an ingrained antijewish sentiment and hatred would have terrible consequences.

@@deeds7529 I would not calll Matthew or John 'new gospels'... Matthew 27:24-25 is utter historical fiction. The only explanation is some fairy tale story to exculpate Roman authorities as much as they could and put the whole deicide chatge on the shoulders of the Jewish authorities. And I am not saying that the gospels are antisemitic. At most antijewish (which are two very different terms). And even then that they were particularly bad about it. Just that those passages ressulted with time an an ingrained antijewish and eventual evolvedinto an outright antisemitic hatred. Which you can hardly blame in a work of fiction, but you can in the supposedly inerrant word of god.

From what I understand, the crowd that cheered Jesus when he arrived to Jerusalem were pilgrims and the like from outside the city who had heard Jesus's message. The crowd that demanded Jesus's crucifixion were religious leaders and chief priests and the like within Jerusalem who already despised Jesus. By the time of Jesus's trial, his supporters would've likely hid away out of fear of arrest, much like Peter and the apostles.

40 lashes was the maximum allowed by law. If it was exceeded the punisher was flogged. 39 was given to avoid any slip up.

Since the comment section is amazed that Pontius Pilate is acting to defend Jesus, I feel its important to share the historical events. Yes, there was a historical Jesus. Historians of all faiths are certain that an ascetic preacher in Galilee was baptized as an adult and eventually crucified for his teachings sometime around the 30s AD. Both Jewish and Roman records attest to this. And since he was crucified, a roman method of execution, we know he probably went before a Magistrate of some kind, most likely one Pontius Pilatus, who was governor of Judea at the time. The politics of Roman Judea were awkward at best, a minefield at worst. Religious sects basically became political parties as the Sadducees and Pharisees were embroiled in conflict over the Roman occupation. The Sadducees, whose ideologies and religious dogma could best be described as part of the Elite, favored romanization, while the Pharisees were more populist and, although not outright resisting roman occupation, were not big fans. To give you an idea of how tense it was, the next generation of young Jewish men would start stabbing collaborators in the streets. Although Herod Antipas had some legal jurisdiction in Judea as a Tetrarch (not a king), it was shared somewhat with Pontius Pilate, and there was considered a muddy distinction between Roman Law, Jewish secular law, and Jewish scriptural law. When Jesus is arrested in Gethsemane, he's not brought to Pilatus, but to a Jewish rabbinical court called a Sanhedrin, portrayed as being almost improv and played by ear, as opposed to a proper Sanhedrin which is orderly and open. Christian narratives were implying it was a kangaroo court. The Gospel narratives say the Jewish religious authorities proceed to Pilate's court at first like to ask they he be crucified as a claimant to the title "King of the Jews", a direct challenge to Roman authority. There, the narratives say, Pilate questions the ascetic on the charge of sedition, and, as you see here, finds no threat to Roman authority when Jesus claims no earthly kingdom. In Luke, this is the point where he sends Jesus to the court of Herod, who is disappointed with the miracle worker who doesn't perform miracles, and returns him to Pilate. Luke frames this as two rival political leaders showing respect to one another to bury a hatchet, but it seems like a game of hot potato. In the biblical narrative, this is when Pilate reluctantly sentences Jesus to be crucified and "washes his hands of the blood" spilt by the Jewish elders, but this part is important: Not only is it ahistorical, its pretty much a narrative pushed by Roman Christians embarassed for having killed their messiah, and so decide to blame it on the Jews. Not only would Pilate have been entirely within his own power to crucify or not crucify any poor preacher he wished, his decision was willful and done in Rome's interest. The act of shifting blame was not a matter of believing in Jesus' innocence, but a matter of skillful diplomacy. Early histories and Christian writings make no two ways about it, Jesus was executed as a rebel by Roman authorities. It was only later that Pilate became sympathetic.

even so , Pilates could very well see Jesus as innocent and wash his hands of the blood. Not out of some outworldly guilt , but as a matter of political maneuver. Remember that he tries to bring amnesty to Jesus , while condemning Barrabas , an actual proven jewish zealot. It is indeed a game of hot potato , more out of escaping any charges against any future crime of Barrabas , than the actions of Jesus.

The rabbis boast of responsibility for Jesus' Crucifixion, “hanged,” even though the Romans were “inclined toward acquittal” of Jesus (Sanhedrin 43a); therefore Jewish denial and blame-shifting to the Romans is a lie. The infamous Toledoth Yeschu, Maimonides’ Hilkoth Akun V, 3 and Letter to Yemen), and the 1905 Jewish Encyclopedia (page 170), all boast of Jewish responsibility for Christ’s death. Matthew 27: 24-25 "When Pilate saw that he could prevail nothing, but that rather a tumult was made, he took water, and washed his hands before the multitude, saying, I am innocent of the blood of this just person: see ye to it. Then answered all the people, and said, His blood be on us, and on our children."

@@weezerfan084 The sourcing of this comment is just awful and belies the insidious motivations behind it. Firstly, it assumes the biblical account is accurate, which....no. the only thing we know for certain to be true in the Bible os that a figure named Jesus was baptized and later executed. So believing the Bible on the matter of a Roman acquittal simply because the Bible says so is circular. Secondly, the Toledot Yeshu (interesting you used a German spelling. Where you getting them sources, friend?) Is non-canonical and agreed to be written in the medieval era, frequently used by anti-semites to malign Jews. You might as well cite the Protocols of the Elders of Zion (and I bet you would). The fact of the matter is that Romans paid little attention to Jewish law, and certainly wouldn't listen to filthy colonial subjects on how to execute people, and they certainly wouldn't use the cross for such a matter, a method of execution meant for those who subvert the power of the state.

Jesus likely knew that even if Pilate had freed him the Pharisees and scribes would have just found someone else to convict him and he also knew what the scriptures say about when he was to die and that he would have to be put to death that day.
