A RTC charter on the Guayaquil & Quito Railway to travel all operable parts of the line in September 2003
After many decades of service the railway was severely damaged by heavy rainfall during the El Niño in 1997 and 1998 but in 2008 the president Rafael Correa named the railroad a "national cultural patrimony" and indicated that it would be restored. The government of Ecuador started to rehabilitate the railway and service was restored between Guayaquil and Quito by 2013. However in 2020, after a change of president, all railway services ceased and by presidential decree the liquidation of the railway company commenced.
Part 3 shot on 07-09-2003 shows the switchbacks between Sibambe & Alausi known as the Devils Nose.
Featured are
Onboard and runpast footage of the switchbacks, Exchanging fuel oil between two steam locos on the switchback.
Locos & Railcars seen are
G&Q Baldwin 2-8-0 53 (1953)
S&C Baldwin 2-8-0 17 (1935)
Autoferro 98

My family and me did this trip back in 1970, I don't recall if we departed out of Ambato or Riobamba. I still remember the switchbacks and rolling through little mountain towns and then seeing open markets in towns before arriving in Guayaquil. As a kid on the AutoFerro, I was fascinated watching men walking around with machetes and old shotguns.

The train crew did a great job, unfortunately they were made redundant in 2020 when the government liquidated the railway company.

Thank you for your kind comment. I sampled a bit of roof riding on our trip which was quite exciting. Sadly no trains have run since 2020 when the government dissolved the railway company. You should add your video to KZbin it would be interesting to see. I have visited Switzerland several times and shall get round to posting the videos on here at some point. The Swiss rail network is very impressive.

Thats very interesting, glad you liked the video. It was one of my all time favourite railway journeys. Have you seen my other videos about the rest of the trip. It is so sad that after spending so much time and money to restore the railway from Duran to Quito it has closed again.

It used to be a vital link from Guayaquil to Quito, in later years it was mainly a tourist attraction. Sadly it is not running at the moment.

It is an amazing feat of engineering, sadly no trains have run since

What kind of stupidity is going on with the train? The head or engine was pulling the coaches around the corner and after going around the corner it's the same engine pushing the coaches. DWL.

it is a zig zag or switchback railway which is needed to gain height in a reasonably short distance without making it too steep.
