Jesus, Starfleet’s design philosophy is often painful to behold. You’d think the federation never engaged in a full scale war in which Starfleet was immediately confronted with adversaries that outmatched them in nearly every battlespace..

It was sadly lost sometime around 2003 when we moved, but my Dad had a kit bash of the Saladin class that he proudly displayed with all his other models. He added a bit of a blue tint to the hull coloring. Not sure why. Sadly, he died in 2016 so I can't ask him now, and it never really occurred to me to ask him before (or I did a long time ago and just forgot, that's always possible).

I like how the USS Archer in Strange New Worlds Episode 1 is NCC-627. If you look in Franz Joseph, Star Fleet Tech manual it says the Hermes Class (MK-VIIB) can be outfitted as a Diplomatic Courier. In the list of ship names for this class, the highest NCC was the USS Phoenix NCC-625.

Love the story you have created for these ships. There's isn't much detail covering these designs. There have been many variations of these designs done by fans, however. Some with hull extensions on the back of the saucer with shuttle bays, others with torpedo systems in the "neck," others with a deflector integrated on the saucer frame, etc. Simple designs that have inspired many variants!

I am a big fan of the Tech Manual and FASA designs. I think the Connie refit is about the best-looking ship they made. To me, the Galaxy was unbalanced and had too many windows. When I first saw it I called it the Space Winnebago. It would have made a really nice cruise ship IMHO. The Defiant was nice and Voyager was just okay. From a navy strategy point of view, the Destroyers make a lot of sense. You need X amount of ships to be everywhere you need to be and some tasks do not need a large ship. It really depends on the threat you are facing. The Scout class makes a little less sense your description is more of a science vessel than a scout. Maybe an armed intelligence trawler? In older navy doctrine Cruisers were the scouts of the fleet. Long-range and fast but less armored than a Battleship. When carrier aircraft took over the scouting mission they became escorts for the Carrier being fast enough to keep up with the carriers Trek has carriers but they never really seem to fit well. Well good video and very well done.

Given that TOS had such a limited number of starship styles and sizes…. I felt the Kitbash fleet gains legitimacy our of sheer necessity, a necessity that Roddenberry failed to understand when he tired to retcon the kitbash fleet OUT of existence in the 70s as such i am fine with the kitbash fleet including the Saladin and Hermes, with the only caveat being that i dont like the flimsy and awkward placement of the deflector dish…. I personally delete it from my head cannon, either replacing it with the non visible deflector array on the Miranda, or an oval NX inspire dish embedded in the hull either at its mid center, or below that point. Also my head cannon between the Saladin and Hermes is although they both appear identical from the outside….. the Saladin as a combat vessel sacrifices crew amenities to fit a larger horizontal warp core in the saucer section while the Hermes relies on a more modest reactor in the nacelle just aft of the collector. Because of this the hermes also has fewer pairs of warp rings …. This is how Hermes has more space in the saucer for crew quarters, labs while the Saladin has more phaser banks and photon torpedo launchers

I see a major flaw with this design. With horizontal warp core design and having no secondary hull, I find it highly unlikely that the core could fit within the impulse engineering area...it's just too small. I do like the concept and physical look...but it just doesn't seem practical due to size.

Personally, I dont see a problem with it in the same way you do... The way I see it is, if it exists, can go to warp as it says it does, then layout must work and any problems that you might see in analyzing the design, simply dont exist at all... For me all Sci-Fi and Trek too, require huge suspension of disbelief... And for me this is no different. Technically speaking the old style destroyer and scout. Both where not shown in The Original Series because Gene Roddenberry wanted to make the Federation space was vast and the Fleet was to small to cover it all. Okay now to the nuts and bolts of this post. The Scouts was probably mostly assigned to fleet operations related to the then cold war Romulan and Klingon empire. While the Destroyers was probably originally meant to be much like the PT Boat's from back in the day to protect docked bigger ship's that's undergoing repairs and refits. But much like the Defiant Landing gear and Captain yacht. Plus Budget reasons. They never got a chance to get made or shown.

Much like TNGs New Orleans class, which would seem to predate the commissioning of the Galaxy class, I would argue that the Hermes and Saladin might also have been intermediary ships leading up to the commissioning of the Connies, rather than post-dating the Constitution's commissioning. What with the Einstein class (Kelvin design) already being a thing years before Kirk's birth, single nacelle designs must have been an early 23rd Century design choice. It wouldn't surprise me if the Hermes and Saladin classes were an outgrowth of the Einstein as much as they were associated with the Constitution design.

Hello, David! I do not want to be a downer, but at 1:30 you showcased the Walker-class . . . . . . I mean, are you one of those "perpetually positive" guys who still strive to somehow reconcile the varying designs from the "old" and modern Trek? Simply put, the Prime Timeline got upgraded back in 2017 and I just learnt to live with that and do not mix it with the pre-2005 stuff. (however, that does not include the stories/storylines; those are or could be congruent) I mean, just imagine... if any of the new shows will ever reach the year 2266, do you really believe that the creators will all of a sudden jump back to the old designs of ships, uniforms, aliens, gadgets, gizmos, and so on, from the 1960s? Or do you believe that the Enterprise (the so-called "Disco-prise") will get "refitted" from being some 500 to 600 metres long to 289 metres? It will just not happen and it'd not make sense in-universe anyway. P.S. - I do love the DSC designs. Speaking of ships alone, I became mildly obsessed with the "new" Klingon fleet and I already began collecting the Eaglemoss models thereof.

Canon is more about events rather then the physical looks of something... IE, we get the word canon from the Bible, and you dont see in the various illustrated versions Christians complaining that thats not what the angels looked like in the last older version of the Bible! This channel, IS dedicated to Canon, but has no problem accepting that the owners of Trek have declared that New Trek is the Prime Timeline and that as a result of Trek being made now a days, has an updated look. As to you question... I dont know what they'll do, nor do I really care as I doubt it will be a real issue, as these designs would simply look more like the DSC Enterprise, but the information would still be the same really... And you're incorrect about the Enterprises size in DSC... Screens shown in the first episode of Season 2 showed the Ents size to be the same and the TOS's size... The way I view the episodes to not make me go insane picking apart every thing that looks different from series to series, is to view them as a re-enactment, rather then actual footage of actual events. In fact this way, certain things make even more sense... Like how Kirk can make a log entry in the middle of a battle while his lips are not moving... And then visual changes are meaningless! Like Gene Roddenberry said when asked at a convention shortly after the release of TMP about why the Klingons looked so different, "Changes? What do mean Changes? There's no changes, that was simply how they always looked, just you couldnt see it before!" And if that explanation is good enough for Gene, it's good enough for you :)

My only only gripe is that your description of a scout isnt really what a scout does. A scout is designed to "scout" ahead and go "hey we found this thing somebody should check it out later"
@TriAngulumAudioStudios
@TriAngulumAudioStudios 3 жыл бұрын
In Star Trek, it's a bit different... From Memory Alpha: In starship classification, a scout ship, or simply scout, was a lightly armed, limited-role starship type. The USS Grissom and Kruge's Bird-of-Prey were also recognized as scout class vessels. (Star Trek III: The Search for Spock) From Star Trek Online: Scout Ships are a type of starship. A unique combination of Science Vessel and Raider capabilities, these vessels come with built-in Sensor Analysis. From Collins Dictionary: a person, ship, or aircraft sent out to gain information. Im pretty sure you're looking at Scout Class for Trek as though Starfleet was a military organization, which would mean like our military of today, it's role would be quite different. BUT as a peaceful exploratory organization, the definition and role change to a more generalized one which fits with the description of it's role in Beta Canon! So in other words, if you have a gripe, you need to take it up with Star Trek itself as well as the various Novel, Comics and Tech manual authors.

Im sorry but you're incorrect... Registry numbers have NEVER been a valid source to determine age of a starship or class... See (Off the Top of my head) TOS- USS Constellation 1017, when the Class itself USS Constitution has a Reg of 1700... The USS Grissom from ST3 Reg 621, most definitely came WAY after the Constitution Class but only has a 3 digit Reg... USS Discovery Reg 1031 yet it was a brand new ship built in 2255, a decade AFTER the Constitution Class Enterprise 1701 was launched... So again, as you can see, Registry numbers are not a valid source to determine age or when a starship was launched!

Sorry folks, but these have got to be THE two ugliest classes ever to be birthed into ST lore. How lazy can you be? Even some of the hideous mash kit ships are easier to look at than these two. This is just another example of the devs/directors/creators thinking they suddenly need to develop some other ships besides the Enterprise. Cheap and lazy. That being said, however, you Sir have done a fantastic job trying to justify these half completed ships better than I would have thought possible. Bravo!

This is the perfect response to Disco-bashers who see heavily gingerbread designs of Discovery as somehow being more advanced than the Constitution class and its siblings. In part one of The Fifty Year Mission, it's noted that the Constitution class is a cut above because it can be routinely repaired and serviced on its mission from inside its smooth, nigh impervious duranium hull. THAT'S an advancement.
