After the truce, soldiers were usually removed from their units ro be sent to others, for they had made friends with the then enemy and governments were not sure they woulld then be ready to keep on shooting at one another. Some officiers were either executed or sent to more dangerous areas were they usually lost their lives. For the main part so, governments tried to do as if nothing had happened, in order to prevent the populations to hear about it, as the amount of fallen soldiers had been so high, people were not so sure they still wanted that war at all. I'm really glad you showed them such a valuable part of history, one in which humanity prevails over greed.

They might have been sharing that Christmas together.

@@auChevalierRed Did they both survive? My grandfather was in training for overseas🇨🇦. They were double marched in freezing rain, full kit. Several, including my grandfather, got pneumonia, arthritis. He lost the use of a lung and was all crippled up for the rest of his short life.

Just the reds stripping all population, living in the other side of the iron curtain , of their humanity. Imagine the sudden silence, after having all your senses bombarded for months. The Germans, who were in a better position than the France based soldiers, had dry trenches, very different from the Allies, who were suffering in muddy, freezing trenches. The Germans were singing Christmas carols, and lit candles on their small trees. Imagine hearing, then joining in to Silent Night, and O Tannenbaum.( O Christmas Tree). They remembered it was the time for “ Peace on earth, and goodwill to men.” 🎄 Troops from India took part in the truce, too. Thanks for this. It shouldn’t be forgotten.

@@grabble7605 The soldiers didn't forget it a day later actually. The truce lasted several days and in some areas it lasted until New Years day. The truce was unofficial, the soldiers themselves brokered the truce which is why it lasted different amounts of days in different areas. The commanders, generals and higher-ups who wanted the war to continue were pissed when they found out. they had to swap units out from those areas or threaten their own troops with execution in order to get the fighting to restart. Also the next year they decided to do a 24-hour artillery barrage on Christmas day to prevent such truces from happening again.

I could see the despair on these people's faces when the soldiers started fighting again. I just wanted to say, there were thousands of soldiers that refused to fight on both sides after the truce. They had to be recalled and replaced to continue the war, with the platoons and battalions broken up and redistributed to other fronts. It was really a time where the light of humanity broke through the fog of war. And world leaders made sure it never happened again. It was so commonplace that it has it's own term now. Fraternizing with the enemy.

After 9/11 hit in the USA, everyone was caught up in anti-Muslim fever ... I never considered myself a racist, but it was easy to be angry and forget that extremists exist anywhere. Fear was rampant. Above my apartment two Muslim ladies from Turkey moved in; they brought down homemade baklava the first night to introduce themselves, and I was so moved by their action. They invited me up for dinners and we got to be good friends despite different cultures. I never met such generous people. I went with them to Ramadan dinners (I'm sorry, I forget the proper term when the daily fast breaks) at the community center so I could learn more, and it really changed my life. Since then I try to learn about everyone that I can and to live anti-hate as much as possible, even in my small, ordinary existence. Much love to you all from Nevada, USA ❤❤❤

and the amazing thing is that World War 1 was the first stepping tone towards a more peaceful world, although it wasn't until after world war 2 and perhaps the end of the cold war that things truly settled down on earth in terms of overall war. Sure it still happens, but since WWII, the wars and casualties in them are tiny in comparison. I in large parts credit this to the information network like the internet, personal telephones, etc. We can sit here and watch people from half around the world just reacting to a musical video.... which was something we wouldn't have been able to just, oh, what, 30 years ago.

This Truce lasted for a few days. In some places over a week. In the many thousands of years of the history of human warfare, this single moment was the greatest act of peace ever. Governments did not put aside their hostility, but rather it was the common soldier who laid down their weapons and embraced their enemies as friends. The Germans started singing Christmas songs, and the British and French began singing their own carols. Then one or two Germans left the trenches and approached the allied lines saying, "Komeraden. Komeraden." Or "Friends. Friends." They shared food, sang songs, played games.... And this happened during one of the most terrifying wars to have ever occurred in Europe. Truce? I think of it as more of a miracle. And what was this insane war all about? An aristocrat was shot by an anarchist, and that lit the fuse on a half dozen different nations that had a tangled network of alliances. Nobody in that generation knew the horrors of real warfare, but were fed stories about the "glorious deeds of the past". And they all wanted to try out the new technologies that were being developed at the turn of the 20th century. Madness. Unfortunately this madness deepened into absolute hate in one soldier named Hitler who was a corporal at the time. And you know where that led to....

There's a French movie from 2005 (if I'm not mistaken) called Joyeux Noël that shows the Christmas truce with French, German and Scottish soldiers meeting and looking at their enemy like human beings, showing family pictures, etc. It also shows how political leaders disapproved of this, to say the least. I've seen it only once but it has a great lesson in humanity. I've recently discovered your channel, I love these videos :) you're doing an amazing work.

If they are interested, there is a movie about the Christmas Truce called Joyuex Noel, it was made by the French and shows a portrayal of the Christmas Truce and how they celebrated together. 7:36 I was in the U.S. Marine Corps for 8 years, saw some pretty intense combat, lost a few Marines too. I can tell you that we care intensely for each other, I'm closer to some of the men I served alongside with than my own flesh and blood brother. That's not a slight against my brother, it's just that I shared experiences and hardships with the Marines I served with that my brother can't understand. I have and do trust those men with my life. Losing a fellow Marine is one of the toughest things I have ever experienced in my life, but in the moment it happens you can't stop and mourn, you have to keep going so that you don't lose any more. A single mistake could cost you or one of your guys their lives and the last thing you want is that on your soul.

And when a soldier was hearing these guns being fired and artillery shells landing near by for months, the soldier would develop something called "Shell Shock", which was later called "Combat Fatigue" during WWII and is now called "PTSD". Some experienced Shell Shock differently, one of the most known symptoms of Shell Shock is something called the "thousand yard stare" where the soldier would just be staring at nothing for a long time looking like they just experienced possibly the worst thing they have ever experienced

Well we have added at least some restrictions to prevent the most horrific methods of killing. E.g. not even Hitler, who had served in ww1 and hence had first hand experience of it, allowed the deployment of toxic gases/ chemical weapons to the very last day of the war

Not trying to say that Hitler refrained from using them from the good of his heart but I find it remarkable that two of the worst dictators in human history in hitler and stalin both refrained from using them as both sides were still terrified from the experience some decades earlier and the certainty of the other using the same weaponry in return once one side resorted to them. Pretty much a cold war scenario in the middle of world war 2

Has nothing changed? We still go to war, yes. People still fight and die for reasons beyond their control, yes. But look at the channel you're on. These people who had previously not known about this event learned about it and felt the same compassion and empathy that people across the world do. We see that some things are universal regardless of culture, language barrier, history and background. We can see all of this and can discuss it here. The world can be seen as becoming more devisive as we become more connected, as people are flocking to extreme sides everywhere now that the ideologies are freely available for anyone to see, or we can view the new connections as further proof that despite differences, we can all find some common ground. The only one who can decide how to view it is you.

Great to show them this, but to correct a few historical facts.... Way more than 2 countries took part in those truces, alone in this video, they showed Scots, French, Germans, English among others. And yes, they were fighting very close to one another, this was called a trench war for that reason. People got so close, that the only way they could go on was by digging trenches into which they could "hide" from direct sighting, if not from whatever would fall into their trenches. Soldiers suffered terrible cases of cold, famine, illness as well as death. These trenches were infested by rats and, depending on the weather, the trenches could even kill them by becoming mud swamps. or by crumbling down.

In case this interest you, although it has been decided in recent years to have them covered with grass so that they are not so worrying-looking, some of these trenches have been kept as trenches for people to visit the sites and conditions of WW1. You can view them online too from France. I went to see them when I was a child and at school (Im French).

Letters were sent home, some making it to the Press. It was only 4 months into the war. Some soldiers of occupied Belgium paused to bury their dead. Some governments hid it. Some didn’t. The information is available to the public.

What was truly in-creditable about this event is that upper brass had forbid this but the soldiers on the front lines of both sides through yelling and extremely brave messengers agreed to stay in their trenches. The german side was the first to start singing christmas songs with silent night then when they finished the british/french side answered with one of their own eventually leading to the 2 sides joining in no man's land singing, drinking, and several accounts as shown in the video soccer/football games.

When the fighting resumed after the Truce both forces had to bring in different troops who had not participated in the Christmas Truce because those that did spent more time trying to shoot the sun from the sky then they did shooting at the men they had spent time with the day before.

12:43 This actual cross, or one very much like it, exists! It is known as the "Khaki Chums Cross", and it is in Ypres, France, about 32 kilometers from the border with Belgium. It was placed there in 1999, on the 85th anniversary of the truce, by (whom I believe to be) the descendants of those who fought in the First World War.

If they choose to give gifts, give them to those that have very little, clothes and food are always good choices. Giving someone a job is the best gift because it let’s them be able to take care of themselves and their families. Honestly I have a feeling that when people forget what really senseless hatred feels like, what it feels like to crave violence and the death of the enemy, one is drawn to it as governments call for war, and when the people forget hatred, forget destruction, they join in on the call. Personally I find Sabaton's version translates a bit better for people like myself, tells the story a bit better rather than just showing an event - but as said, that's what I find personally, and also personally, both do the job well. (Though for my personal taste, in Sainsbury's the part of the English guy sticking his chocolate in the German's pocket felt extremely.... corny? Cheesy? not sure what to call it - but there are elements in Sabaton's video where the same thing could be said, so bleh...)

Musicians took liberties with telling of story. I don't believe any man came out in the open with hat in hand, especially at first. My understanding is that one side took to singing Christmas carols; Silent Night, and the other side recognized the sound; and gunfire began to stop. When gunfire ceased, then people came out.

Not that much liberties. There was Christmas truce on several locations and there are several ways how they started of which one of them began when a German soldier climbed out of the trenches. They estimate about 100k soldiers had a truce that day. In some areas they tried but didn't work out as planned, so many were killed because the other side misinterpreted their intentions.

That is shown in the video though, the guys in the other trench heard the lead singer play the piano and singing and at 6:00 it seems the french soldier (in blue uniform) started singing as well, prompting the guy with the notebook to write "hear carols from the trenches, we sing oh holy night". Liberties were taken to fit it all in one video, but every element of the video was reported from different parts of the trenches in letters and diaries (well, maybe not that someone had a piano in the trench, that might be the one stretch). Remember that it didn't happen in only one place, the frontline was very long and the truce took place on several places independent of eachother. It is not impossible that at one spot it happened exactly as in the video, but of course here they have combined different stories from that day in one single location.

The French/Belgium/Allied trenches were more temporary, as the soldiers were intended to attack and take back the land.
