Sabaton are essentially modern day bards. They sing in memory of people (White Death, 82nd All the Way), Historic Events (Primo Victoria, Bismarck), and things that should never be forgotten (Final Solution, The Last Stand), stories that aren't that well known (The Last Battle, No Bullets Fly). These are just a small sample of their music.

There are some surviving letters from soldiers on the front when the truce happened. One from a Corporal Renton, presumably to his parents went as follows : "“I never thought we would spend Christmas the way we did. We were in the trenches on Christmas day. On Christmas Eve the Germans in front of us started singing what appeared to be hymns. We were shouting for encores (their trenches are only about 150 yards in front of us), and they kept the singing up all night. On Christmas Day some of them started to shout across to us, to come over for a drink. It started with one or two going over half-way and meeting the Germans between the two lines of trenches; then it got that there was a big crowd of German and British, all standing together shaking hands and wishing each other a merry Christmas. They were giving us cigars and cheroots to exchange for cigarettes and some of them had bottles of whisky. They seemed a decent crowd that was in front of us. They were all fairly well dressed and the majority of them could speak broken English. Some of them could speak it as well as myself. They said they were not going to fire for three days. They kept their word too: there was no rifle fire for two days after Christmas. There were two dead Frenchmen between our lines. We could never get out to bury them ‘till that day. The Germans helped us to dig the grave. One of their officers held a service over the graves. It was a sight worth seeing and one not easily forgotten; both Germans and British paying respect to the French dead."

I don’t use the word ‘hero’ very often, but those poor men deserve nothing less than the title of hero. The fact a Christmas truce even happened, two sides stopping the (at the time) largest conflict in human history to share stories and have a laugh for just one day, is absolutely remarkable. We should all strive to show that level of compassion and humanity to our fellow man, that even in the darkest of times, we can still come together.
@vaspeter2600
@vaspeter2600 2 жыл бұрын
The best (or maybe saddest, depending on how you look at it) aspect of the Christmas truce is that it was unsanctioned. It wasn't the idea of the officers. Instead, the grunts on both sides essentially mutinied to go "eff this, we are extending an open hand towards the enemy because they are people just like us, even if this truce is temporary, come what may".

I was a bit perplexed by Kira's reaction to Joakim's voice at first, but then I realized that if you've never heard him sing before I suppose it can be a bit out of place/unexpected with how gruff and rough he sounds hehe :) Don't get me wrong, I've been a fan of Sabaton since the early days of Primo Victoria and the Attero Dominatus album. They're great 🙂 Jocke's voice isn't exactly what you expect out of a ballad though 😄

As someone already said, Sabaton are like the bards of modern times. They sing songs that tell stories of war and the ones who fell. They've done tons of them, and they never take sides. Hearts of Iron, Soldier of Heaven, No Bullets Fly, Night Witches, Gallipoli, Steel Commanders (they absolutely go nuts when tanks are involved), the list goes on. They're a fantastic band, and I wouldn't know half of what I know of history if I'd never found their music.

Great Reaction, Sabaton sings about Military History from many time periods and has their own "Sabaton History Channel " on youtube. the Blonde German soldier is the drummer and he is married to Floor Janson the current lead singer of Nightwish and singing the end credits here) for more on this topic there is a decent movie (2005) "Joyeux Noel" (Merry Christmas) shows the German, French & British (well a Scottish unit) , this took place Unofficial during the 1st year of the war by the soldiers at the front and they also used the time to bury the bodies of the dead. sadly when word of these events got out many units were punished and relocated to other sections of the line were the fighting was more savage. and then they made sure on holidays they would launch attacks and such. but the war took a turn and got more deadly esp once GAS started to be used in 1915 some soldier tried to repeat the event of 1914 but were shot. also Sabaton History put out a eps. covering the story of this event - kzbin.info/www/bejne/gnvUZ2eae5qNnLM also Paul mccartney covered this topic in 1983 with his song & music video "Pipes of Peace"- kzbin.info/www/bejne/iqjcd4eIfM58i7c

I really like their idea of bringing historical events to life. When I heard this song for the first time, I cried several times during the day, listened to it many times and basically cried myself to sleep. I don’t fully understand why it evoked such strong emotions in me, but it certainly helps that the song and video are so well made.

Kira really touched a nerve. And sometimes the music really helps it come out. Sabaton are the masters of emotion; but remembering this moment in history, this one day in the four years of horror that was that war, really puts the parallel to today. Circumstances are by no means exact, and I don't say they are.... but it's been a century since. Lest we forget.

Justto add some context that makes the moment more beautiful. The truce wasn't a large truce across the front, many places didn't have a truce. But many did, they were NOT sanctioned by command and many people were punished for it. But independently all across the lines, groups agreed to stop fighting all on their own. In some place they held memorials for those dead and took time to bury the dead, some places exchanged POWs, people swapped food, sung carols and played games. Watch the sabaton history channel video on it for more info, really worth it.

As I heard the story, the British were singing Christmas carols in their trenches on Christmas Eve, and in a moment of silence they heard the Germans caroling in _their_ trenches. Curiosity got the better of a few British soldiers who walked over, the Germans reacted to them with equal curiosity, one thing led to another and the Christmas Truce became one bright spot of WWI.

The weather finally clears after weeks of rain and muck, you stop shooting at the movement in the trench across from you. Slowly people take the clear weather as a sign that now the dead can be recovered from No Man's Land. Suddenly you hear singing from the other trench. You join in at first just to show them up that you can sing louder and better than them. Suddenly it slowly stops being a competition and becomes a united chorus. Someone on the other side suddenly calls out, "if you no shoot, we no shoot." Men begin to come out of the trenches. Both sides meet, shake hands, in broken language barriers, they exchange Christmas greetings. Excess cigarettes and chocolate are traded. Fresh socks and scarves pass around. You see even two officers exchange hats. A football appears and is kicked back and forth between two teams, some keep scores some don't. This carries on into the night. A soldier from the other trench is chatting with you, showing you a picture of the girl he wants to marry. You show him a picture of your own sweetheart in waiting. You both laugh at how lucky the other is to know such a beauty. Suddenly an officer steps in and stops the games, orders the men back into the trench, and fires three warning shots into the air. The people disperse, and you give one finale goodbye to the man you spent the last couple of hours getting to know. 12 hours ago the war was over, there were no French, English, or Germans, just men enjoying a moment of peace. Now, the thunder of artillery echos, rifles crack, grades send up clouds of dirt. As you aim your rifle, you look out for your friend, wondering if he's dead or if he's aiming at you. You raise the barrel above the trench line and fire a bullet into the abyss above the line of men. You then notice the men around you are also deliberately aiming high, as if you avoid the other men. When Command learns of what happened, you're rotated out of the front, sent to a more inhospitable front, where there was no Christmas Truce, and all you can hope is a kinder fate befell your friend from the other trench.

sabaton writes songs about historic battles and the heroes who fought throughout history. they have so many great songs, ranging from emotional songs like this one about some of the lowest points of human history, to fast songs about especially courageous acts of valor or badass last stands. the song that got me into them is Panzerkampf, about the german invasion of the USSR, and eventual defeat and retreat. screaming eagles is another great one about the 101st airborne division of the us army. they saw action both on d-day, operation market garden, the battle of the bulge among other battles.

This video gets me every time I watch it (which has been many, many times till now). This truce was probably the most honest and sincere Christmas: A short moment of humanity in an inhuman surrounding. But then, when the fighting continues the next day, it shows the cruelty and madness of mankind in the most obvious way. It's sch a sad moment. And if I am not at least close to tearing up, Floor will give me the rest with her incredible voice at the end.

Kira, im not gonna lie, when i first heard you compare sabaton to a musical, it kinda upset me, until you mentioned how much you love musicals.. i personally have never liked musicals, and prejudged that, and for that, i am sorry. I just want you to know, you and kit, are honestly my favorite reactors on this channel, nothing wrong with the others, but you guys were the ones that made me sub. Sabaton has always held a deep place in my heart since i first found them, and im thankful kit was here to guide you through the first time listening. You arent alone in being surprised by the lead singer, Joakim’s, voice. My mom always says “turn that viking off” lol. Sabaton is all about honoring those who served, reguardless of nationality, or what role they were in. The ballad of bull, tells of a combat medic for example if im not mistaken, that carried soldiers out of a live fire zone. Over a dozen. You guys keep on keeping on, and ill keep supporting you. Much love from the state to the west.

Have a look at 1914 Sainsbury’s Christmas 2014 advert which covers the same event in a very well produced video. I don’t think people today can even imagine how truly awful it was to be in those trenches. And we must recognise that there are similar terrible atrocities happening all around the world every day and we seem powerless to stop them Or even relate to them because they seem so far away. Update look at what’s happening in the Russian invasion of Ukraine thanks to the evil tyrant Putin

As someone who grew up along side the internet, came around in my early teens, I learned very early on what it was and could be, so I sont really engage much at all in any social media, and yea it was calmer in its younger years.. was more camaraderie back than but OFC there were vindictive people, trolls, scammers, but ppl were generally not used to the anonymity.. they were still human, we still are just it's far more broad now..

You need to watch the very last episode of Black Adder Goes Fourth. It's about this war and how futile it all was. (You actually need to see the whole series.) It stars Rowan Atkinson (known to must Americans as Mr Bean) as the titular character.

Sabaton has been preparing for this song for several years. Literally a few years thought how to write it. They invited a reconstruction group from the Czech Republic to make a music video. The cross at the end of the video still stands in France today. The operatic aria at the end is sung by the star of the metal band Nightwish - Floor Jansen. Privately, wife of Sabaton drummer Hannes Van Dahl

The Christmas Truce of 1914 is one of those stories that restores faith in Humanity. It is said that on Christmas Eve 1914 (roughly five months into WWI), British soldiers heard their German counterparts singing Stille Nacht, a.k.a. Silent Night, and then started singing along in English. From there, soldiers came out of the trenches and celebrated Christmas together. It wasn't an official truce, but multiple smaller truces, some that lasted up til New Years. Sabaton, and I am fairly new to them, is a Swedish metal band (the exact subgenera of metal is harder to pin down) who tend to make songs relating to military history. This is part of their upcoming album on WWI.

Sabaton is a Swedish band if you don't know. So the chrismas truce happened in 1914 and the British, French and German forces played a game of football and barbers gave hair cuts and they exchanged chocolate and champagne some photos of families and buried the dead. I think the Pope wanted a truce just for Christmas but the leaders of the Countries didn't want this but the soldiers had their own unofficial truce but obviously after the day ended they started the war again and it would be the first and last time the Christmas truce would happen and that's why it's remembered for why it happened.

@Chicago Reacts: Sabaton isn't just about somber rememberances -- Sabaton also sings about stories that have either been forgotten, or were never taught about. I highly recommend reacting to the following: 1) Defense of Moscow: About the defense of Moscow, Russia, in 1941, during Operation: Barbarossa in World War II. 2) Night Witches (Animated Story Video) feat. YarnHub: About the all-women, highly decorated Soviet Air Force 588th Night Bombing Regiment, known as "Die Nachthexen," or, "The Night Witches." And here's the thing about the Christmas Truce: One German commander, after the Truce, had to move his men to another section of the line, because his men refused to fire upon the men they had made friends with the day before. And on a personal note, I find that over the last couple of years, because of this near-instantaneous gratification world we live in, people have lost a lot of self-discipline, self-control, and a lot of people think it is now proper to be vicious, because for all the talk of respecting each other, not a lot of people do. Not only that, but people automatically think they are entitled to being respected, even when they haven't earned it -- and, I find that people now confuse being cordial, with being respected, and the two are not the same.

I'm sorry, but it shows the lack of history where she asks; is this from a film, is it real?" At least do some prep for what you're going to review? She sounds like a total dork! Let alone the cinematic, editorial and other production qualities, which to me are well worthy of if not an Oscar then whatever is available.

Would love to see you react to Poets of the Fall - Carnival of Rust (their most well known song and the music video got voted as the best Finnish music video ever back in 2006 when the song was released). Truly an underrated band from here in Finland. Also a band with many different sounds all the way from slow melodic songs to full on rock. Although if you want to immediately hear a song that showcases how crazy good the lead singer Marko Saaresto's voice can be (and while his vocal range might not be the most dynamic out there he is an amazing example of what you can achieve by having absolutely perfect control of your vocals especially the raw emotion that his voice is able to convey) then i recommend listening to their song Daze. His vocals on the chorus are something out of this world. I just think that so many more people would love their music if they just ever heard them but since their from Finland it rarely happens. Although many have heard their songs in Remedy's video games Max Payne 2, Alan Wake, Quantum Brake and Control (Also every single reactor i have seen reacting to them has been pretty much blown away by their music so i'm very confident you'll like it) also... also... lot's of deep and meaningful lyrics and wordplay in their songs sorry for the long rant i just really want more people to know about them

I must admit Kira, your genial laughter at a video commemorating a rare moment of peace and a literal Christmas miracle that happened only once during one of the most horrific and tragic eras of human history was exceptionally irritating. Your reaction towards the end made up for it but still, yikes. Not the reaction I’d expect.
