Is hard to whip cream without refrigeration. The cream has to be really cold, or it will churn to butter instead.

@@chloehall4270 better off cooks had ice that they could buy from cold places, or they lived in a cold place. We didn't invent cold cooking, we just made it easier and more accessible with refrigeration. Are you suggesting that these people have those options any more than a freezer? Edit: i looked into it, it was popular in the 16th century, before refrigeration, but it was different. The cream naturally rose to the top and they whipped it then skimmed it off the milk.

It's like strawberry shortcake. When I was a kid we'd go up to my uncles farm in Vermont, We'd pick strawberries, milk the cows, separate the cream, whip the cream and make homemade biscuits. (not cookies, these are like southern biscuits). There's something extra special because of that anticipation when it takes all day to make that evenings desert.

Exactly we used to do this in the wintertime I'd freeze our strawberries shut off the agitator on the bulk tank to skim off the cream and make ice cream & whip cream, make the buttery biscuits . Half a biscuit on bottom, strawberries, ice cream, half biscuit, strawberries, ice cream topped with strawberries and whipped cream. Yum

I hope that the mess has been made properly with lots of broken meringue mixed it as nobody seems to be mentioning it. Have the tribal people tried a proper apple crumble which has to have custard made with Birds custard powder (not a proper egg custard)? It is one of the best English puddings (even better with gooseberries)

Domestic strawberries which came into cultivation recently in the mid 1700s are in fact a hybrid originating in northern France, between two American species; the Virginia Strawberry and the Chilean Strawberry, largely replacing the European Strawberry which had been cultivated for about a century before that. So they are a hybrid but not between the tomato and the mulberry, which would be genetically impossible.

Häagen-Dazs ice cream, they have a couple new flavours that are amazing, Aero chocolate (Canadian chocolate bars) mixed with truffles and salted caramel and Tiramisu, coffee and chocolate with truffles. Häagen-Dazs was created in The Bronx, New York in 1960, the first store was in Brooklyn, now they're all over the world, these two flavours come from the Ontario factory, only available here in Canada, if you can get some I highly recommend they try it. Truffles are expensive, they're a fungus like mushrooms and have an earthy flavour that's hard to describe, perfect in ice cream.

My family makes something similar. The back of a box of Bisquick has a recipe to make shortcake, top with sliced, sugared strawberries and then top that with whipped cream. So tasty. I'm going to go pick some strawberries tomorrow after watching this video!

How to make whipped cream at home: Have cream cold with some sugar and beat it vigorously in a bowl with a spoon until it gradually thickens into the whipped cream. But it has to be cream, not milk. My mother made it that way when I was a child, and I have made it that way.

This is the second time I have heard Tahir say that strawberries are a hybrid of tomatoes and mulberries. He is right that they are a hybrid, but he couldn't be more incorrect about the species used to create them. They are a hybrid of the North American strawberry (F. virginiana) and the Chilean strawberry (F. chiloensis). Just saying. No offense to Tahir.

@@paulinesoares3594 The meringue is similar to soft meringue that goes on top of pies. It has a higher sugar content and is baked for a lot longer at a lower temperature to dry it out. It becomes solid and aerated, which is very brittle and exceptionally sweet.

It's kind of them to not get offended. I'd have a hard time not leaving an Italian bakery with an Italian dessert! I've got a store than will make cannoli shells for me if I'm pressed for time (or lazy), but not an actual Italian bakery, so I have to make them all from scratch. Probably a good thing, or I'd get fat!

Foreign dishes are so tasty because our freedoms allow for invention and we are open to trying things from around the world. Some of are foods are also because of the vast many things we can grow compared to them. Also compared to them we seem rich. The last thing is we are gluttonous so we are always experimenting and exploring new ways to make food and invent dishes you may only find in one’s country but we take what we like from it and change or add ingredients to our taste.

Eton and Harrow are private secondary (grade 9 start) boarding schools, not colleges, at least not as we'd think of them. This dessert doesn't look quite right. Traditionally, some of the strawberries would be crushed and folded into the whipped cream & meringue mixture, then the dessert would be topped with some fresh strawberry pieces. There shouldn't be any layers. Also, I'm confused as to why they think it's like ice cream. Did someone freeze it for some reason?

To make whipped cream at home you need heavy cream (milk that's 36% cream or higher, 18% coffee cream will not do), vanilla and sugar, amounts vary depending how much you want to make, if you don't have an electric mixer use a whisk, whip it until all the air bubbles are gone and it's a big blob of white goo or colloid, a homogeneous noncrystalline substance consisting of large molecules or ultramicroscopic particles of one substance dispersed through a second substance...sorry, I digress, got sciency there for a second, and serve immediately.
