One of the things I remember from my childhood is my Grandma, Great Aunts and their friends sipping pot liquor from the collard/mustard/turnip greens. They'd pour it in a tea cups and enjoy all the essence from the juices along with dipping some of the cornbread or hoecakes/hot water cornbread in the juice to help it go down easy and bring more flavor to each bite.....I don't know if you used any smoked meats in the spinach, but that's always a must! I sometime used smoked turkey butts/necks to bring more flavor. Man, I think I need to make a pot of greens this weekend!!!

SOUL FOOD is exclusive to the African American community. It was created and perfected by our ancestors (former slaves). While a lot of things eaten are similar to Southern cousine, our herbs/spices and techniques are very different. For example white people and Black people tend to make Mac & Cheese very differently. We also tend to prepare our sweet potatoes, fry our chicken, etc very differently.

Kayfabe - the first time I heard this name was on a podcast by Eric Weinstein.
@AKayfabe2 жыл бұрын
@@rahusphere Kayfabe is a wrestling term that was used to mean to stay in character for your fans. It’s not really a thing today because wrestlers go online as their real selves and we know about who they are etc. I like the idea because most people have a little bit of kayfabe in life, whether it be at work, or not being their complete selves in public, and to me it means no one knows your complete self no matter how much of it you show the world.

These guys always bring a smile to my face! I'm happy to know they enjoy soul food but why do they call the greens spinach? Were the greens replaced with spinach for collard or mustard greens?
@pennyg19662 жыл бұрын
They probably don't have collards where they live. So they had to use spinach instead.

They eat a lot of mustard greens in Pak, but a ton of spinach. Not sure what they were eating but they mistook iceberg lettuce for cabbage. Might just be confused about the word

if you like Naan you will probably enjoy Roti. At least that’s my experience they are flatbreads that are used to dip into meals and eat with the bread. Like with Indian foods that have much sauce and you scoop it onto the Naan, or use Naan to make the meal more hearty. Roti is like that too except it’s flatter than naan and looks more like a tortilla but it isn’t corn.

They need to come here to Louisiana to get real Soul food. Or you could just bring them to my house and I would be happy to cook it for them. It looked like a good meal but you're missing butter for the cornbread and hot sauce for those greens. And that did look like spinach. Traditional soul food greens are typically collard greens mustard greens spinach greens ET cetera. I'm glad they got an idea of what soul food is, but having an idea of it and having authentic soul food are two very different things. But I realize you did your best with where you're at and what you had and I greatly appreciate you bringing all these new beautiful things to them and allowing us to watch them experience it. It truly is heartwarming
