100% was waiting for a very polite "this tastes like someone described it from another room". Just from personal experience, it's usually very toned down to appeal to wider consumer base. Surprised at the positivity, as well as the interjections of "we serve it by adding or doing this differently." You can say it's blander, we know, but appreciate the kind words!

Indian (and Pakistani) food is hugely popular in the UK with many restaurants and takeaways in every town and city. Chicken Tikka Masala is one of our national dishes invented in Scotland, Shish Mahal in Glasgow to be precise. Basically an adaption of Indian cooking for the Western taste.

Well, there's a bit of a debate where it was invented apparently, some say it existed before Glasgow and came via London. Wherever it was invented in this form, it was in Britain, and probably by a chef of Bangladeshi origin

The vast majority of what we in the UK refer to generally as "Indian food" is cooked over here by people from Bangladesh. I know that a lot of the dishes we eat are loosely based on traditional dishes from Pakistan and India, but altered to appeal to the British desire for stronger flavours. We also have restaurants that serve more "niche" regional food such as Nepalese food.

I think part of the reason for that is because the culinary cross-pollination started before the Partition, so it was all India at the time.

Also, CTM gets a hard time from culinary snobs and Indian restaurants who are sick of making it all the time. They have a point, kind of, but if you go through all the effort of making this at home (WHICH YOU SHOULD), including the ESSENTIAL part of getting a nice char on the grilled chicken, then you will be giving everyone that loves chicken one of the best things in life. No lie. Home-made Chicken Tikka Masala is pure love.

Most British 'Indian' takeaways are actually Bangladeshi. They're staffed by Bangladeshis and have lots of Bangladeshi cuisine (plus Indian and Pakistani). The restaurants just call themselves 'indians' as 1, it's what people expect 2, Sadly, people have better feelings towards India than Bangladesh or Pakistan. Next time you have chance, check the 'indian' takeaways in your area. I'll guarantee they're mostly Bangladeshi.

I always find that rice is like the stage on which the curry can play. Without the roti or rice, the flavours of a great curry don't have the room to spread out and to come to life. Same with stew, I really need that rice or crusty bread to lift it up on a savoury pedestal.

The extent to which westerners enjoy spicy hot food depends upon several factors. First, age is a big factor. Those over the age of 60 in the US likely weren't exposed to spicy foods as children - though there are exceptions. So that generation and the one older than them often don't like spicy hot foods. Very young children also tend to shy away from it. But spicy hot foods have exploded in popularity in the US, really beginning in the 1980's. For many decades, ketchup was the #1 sauce or condiment in the US, but it has been various styles of hot sauce for many years now.

Tikka masala is not the same without naan, chutney, and raita (the yoghurt-cucumber dish). You need the balance of flavors, temperatures, and textures to get the full delicious experience. I say this as an American who discovered the joys of Indian food much later in life than I would have wished. And I am referring to US restaurant Indian food; it must be even better in the countries where it comes from, with every variation and nuance.

Why are they using a spoon? I am in the UK but eat curry with my right hand. In a curry house in the UK you can either eat it with your right hand or with cutlery but it is usual to try to eat the authentic way, just as it's usual to use chop sticks in a Chinese restaurant. I can't imagine trying to eat a chapatti with a knife and fork.

So the last time I had this, was at a Mexican takeout restaurant. They included 2 tortillas with it so I put the rice and chicken in the tortilla and ate it like a taco.

A basic British curry is almost identical to the Japanese Navy curry.

I love Pakistani and Indian food. I have a pakistani cantina type cafe here in Oslo Norway that i have been going to for about 15 years. Its about 10 £ for a Chicken curry with rice and a naan. Thats a very good deal here in norway :-) When i go to the UK, i allways go for a curry. I see it as the best british food. A bit like eating Indonesean food in the netherlands.

Curry was invented by an English monk whilst travelling through china, the modern word " curry" is derived from korai which describes the general style of cooking. He wrote a book called the art of korai containing 400 recipes. As he travelled back through Asia to Europe, he spread the style of cooking. So it really is true that curry is an English invention. ( When I first heard of this I thought it was a joke!! ) So please look it up folks!!

Curry seems less common than Chinese dishes in the US but it common in England.Mostly I have made this kind of food myself from books. On the other hand I am sure Japanese food is not as common in England as here where sushi and other Japanese favorites are easy to find.

Japanese food is a big thing here too, but don't forget we have close ties to India and the commonwealth in general, so a lot of our food is defined by that. Indian food is definitely most popular though, although what we get here isn't exactly the same as they changed it to suit humour tastes. Where I live is a big ghurka community, so we have a lot of Nepalese food places too and their food is absolutely amazing.

I think it depends on where you live. I live in Austin, TX and we have Indian restaurants everywhere. Though Pakistani restaurants exist, they are rarer and more to the north of town. The only cuisine I cannot get is Moroccan.
