Another strange this is the prehistoric tribes(means did not invent writings) like Hawaii ancestors actually sail across pacific by super rudiments sails... It's amazing to think how terrifying the ocean was. Before the more advanced navigation technologies, any ship that lost sight of the coast was almost certainly doomed. Once lost, there was little to no chance to find your way back.

It is heartwarming to see them soak up knowledge and embracing it instead of pretending to know everything already. Their curiosity and childlike sense of wonder hasn't been extinguished yet an they enjoy learning new things about the world. Really, really wholesome. I kinda would love to see a follow-up video of this, where you might hand them a tablet with google earth on it, so that they could explore the world further, getting an even better understanding of the true scale of the world, due to the ability to zoom in up to street level. I guess I could watch them explore the world for hours, enjoying watching them explore places they might find interesting. I think that would be awesome.

It takes me at least 15 hours to drive from border to border in California, & I know for certain it takes 12-14 hours to drive straight through from Albuquerque to my home in Central Coast California! The idea that science and religion are at odds is a pretty new thing for the most part and a lot of it comes from evangelical Christians. For hundreds of years the Catholic Church was one of the most advanced scientific institutions in the world.

I met a man like this. I showed him the location we are standing, on Google maps on my phone. I said "you recognise this place?" He's like "ye, is here " I zoom out and I show him the above view. And show him all the nearby villages and cities. And he is surprised. I zoom out more and show him the earth and it was mind blowing to him that we live on that ball, floating in space. I watched a different Tribals channel where they talked about the solar system, and none of them seemed to be able to grasp that there’s only one sun. They actually said that they believed when the sun came up, traveled the sky and then set in the evening, that their country had its own sun, and other places had *their own* sun. It pretty much blew my mind to think that in 2024 there are MILLIONS of people who know absolutely nothing about the world we live in (and on). I was Canadian born but grew up globally with English as a Second Language teacher parents; my dad summers with me just over 6 months to keep our health care, but taught English and Programming for a decade, now wintering in the Philippines. He was horrified to see so many students eating Exotic Western KFC: "General Tso outranks Colonel Sanders!" His last year in China he brought some postcards showing Ottawa and Toronto Chinatowns; some smirks at the punny names, but real laughter came when someone spotted they all had "Printed In China" on their backs. He also brought them several takeout menus; the pictures of huge portions and the ingredients led to much more laughter; "They call THAT Chinese?"

I had the same thought! Over the holidays, we gave my four-year-old niece an interactive globe. She can touch the globe and run through different learning games on it, all of them designed to teach her things about the world. Her globe has some topographical features, too. I had similar toys when I was a child. Our educations begin early, here - well before formal enrollment in a school. I am sorry that these gentlemen missed out on the opportunity to experience the wonder and joy of exploring a globe as a child, but I am thankful that they get to experience that now - and that they shared it with us! It makes me look at the globe through new eyes. I hope they get to take the globe home and share it with their friends and family members.

Their expressions of amazement are inspiring and remind me of my curious childhood, when I learned the very same insight out of the blue. A humble reminder that we as individuals don´t actually own all the human knowledge, neither we are entitled to receive it like a birth right, we (as singular humans) just borrow a small fraction of it according to our priviledge access and limitations. So all I can think about is to be grateful for all the huge and undeserved scientific knwoledge gathered, processed, organized and taught by our ancestors, generation after generation. Now that we received such gift without all that previous effort, it is our responsability to contribute in some way to preserve, verify, correct, update, expand, and pass on more and better knowledge to the next generations.

Back in the late 80's I moved to Tibet to teach ESL. I took about 20 globes that you blow up like a beachball - about this same size. My students were moderately well versed geographically speaking, but several of them had never seen the world in a globe fashion. They made wonderful gifts and the perspective it provided was marvelous. The reactions of my students to learning things was priceless - much like this video.

Most of the stuff they've seen I pretty common sens, since they did confirm that they watched movies, maybe they even listen to radios. The water part is probably the thing that confused them the most since it's prob not mentioned very often and sort of taken for granted.
