My husband is from Japan, his mother is very judgmental of me. But the stories from my brother in law is that her mother in law was horrible to her. It’s like “tradition” to keep the younger women in their place. I think it’s ridiculous to be mean to me because her mother in law was mean to her. I can’t cook anything to her liking. So I’ve stopped. Thankfully we live worlds apart I can’t imagine having to live close by.

I was enthralled watching these beautiful ladies experience the cooking of their neighbors. It underlines something I have learned over a long lifetime, that is, each family creates its own tastes and dishes over time, each different from their neighbors, friends and other extended members of their family. They should not be too judgemental of the cooking of their colleagues, as I am sure that each dish, within its own family unit is perfect.

The ladies are much tougher on each other than the men, probably because it's their daily task to feed the family. I was a bit surprised that the youngest participant got the highest score, but maybe it's still fun for her. After you make 3 meals a day for 40 years it becomes work.

They are way more critical of each other's cooking than the men were.....I suppose it is that they take much pride in being the best mother wife and cook as each of them can be......let one thing be said however....if you ask one of their children to try each dish,I will get you that the child can identify his mother's cooking without hesitation! NO ONE cooks like your own mother's cooking! Just ask my grown children! They beg me to make the homemade eggrolls etc that they love SO much! ( And,If I made 100 egg rolls they don't last 24 hours!)
