Seen the Dead many times in the 80s and 90s, and Box of Rain was always a highlight. R.I.P. Phil, I'll remember the Zone. Such a long long time to be gone & a short time to be there 💀 🌹

When you start hearing Phil is when you start hearing the Grateful Dead. Jerry was the star but bass drives the bus, and no one played, plays, or will ever play the bass like Phil.

I saw Grateful.Dead 63 times w Jerry. Favorite Phil songs: unbroken chain, tom thumb blues, box of rain, if the shoe fits.

First the Dead and then later Phil and his "Friends" bands were instrumental (pun intended) in keeping the "Capitol Theater" (in Port Chester NY) alive since 1970. I grew up in Port Chester and attended my first Dead show in 1971 at the ripe old age of 16. Phil recently celebrated his 84th birthday there in march. Their show in Madison WI (Oct '73) practically emptied out our dorm. Just one long party..and the chain remains unbroken.

IMHO the best era was the early 80s, at the time Brent added a spark and they still were playing the smaller venues. The greek in Berkley, Uptown in Chicago, Red Rocks, the Capitol and all the various War Memorials, that you could still go to at the last minute and get in, no "Miracle" needed. But for me, while they weren't the best shows, the 89' Europe tour was incredible. Especially the Berlin shows. " Well the first days are the hardest part, don't you worry anymore". There was so much hope for a better world. The wall had just come down and for some of the East Berliners, those shows were their first live music events they had witnessed. The Dead was such a huge part of my life back then, and that period will always hold a special place in my memory and heart. Fare thee well Phil, and I know your are jamming with Jerry and Pig.

Best years for me: 1970-1974. The Europe 72 tour may have been the peak, because it also included Pigpen. Loooove the Dead, yeah. ❤😊

Another high ranked “fan” who doesn’t like 1990? That’s insanity to me. I think 87-90 was an incredible time for the band. Just as good as 72-78 in a different way. Also 80-85. There’s great points and sounds about all those eras. I don’t even have to check the 50 shows i am sure it’s a bunch of 1969-1977 shows. Bob Weir himself who knew the band more than anyone right? When asked what year was the best thought for a few seconds and said 1989. We were firing on all cylinders. Cant argue with that. The band every night that year was reliably good with some shows that were just monsters. 7/4/89 for instance. Or the Warlock shows. How do these “experts” not love those shows? Blows my mind. Dick and Dave both have picked so many shows from that 69-78 period. Have me do a picks and come out with 1-2 releases a year and I’ll pick Brent era and maybe some 91-95 too!

The Grateful Dead was at their finest from 1969-1978. Jerry was pretty much in a drug stupor from about 1981-1986. Brent's synth bell chimes certainly didn't help that era's sound, either. They had some moments of recapturing a little of the old magic from 1987-1990, but by 1991, the music was all just humongous synthesized digital mud. You're absolutely right about Garcia's solo stuff completely outshining the Dead during this late period....

At first I was ready to dismiss Ray Robertson as unqualified because he never saw them live. But to be honest, the tapes don't lie. I went to 101 shows from 79 to 95, and while I had a great time at most shows, there were a lot of shows where the energy from the band dropped off when we hit the drum solo. Worse, there were times were I could predict what the next song was after Drums/Space. There were too many times when the band would go into The Other One, but there was no juice after the 2nd verse was sung. And that lack of energy was on Jerry. I guess Ray heard those drop-offs tool I would like to see his list to see if he picked any shows that I went to.

I don’t know about this guy, first off he said he isn’t really a fan of live music so how can you pick the best 50 of the best live Grateful Dead shows if you’re not a fan of live music? And he was saying that Jerry was better with his solo projects than with the dead in the 80’s and couldn’t remember what instrument David Grismon plays. And did I also hear right that he never saw the dead live? I’m not sure but if that’s the case then how can you possibly pick 50 best live dead shows if you never even saw any. He looks about my age and my first show was 88 and my last show was a Jerry band show in 92 or 93 and it was horrible, not at all comparable to the dead (I saw Jerry band many other times and they were great but not better than the dead just different) and it’s proven by the fact that Jerry band could play venues that held less than half the amount of people that the venues the dead had to play. And being that age there is no way you can not like the Brent years. It’s definitely pretty much unanimous that everyone thinks that 87 or 88 until spring 90 were some of the best shows. And no one can tell you a favorite were song after 80?!?! I mean feel like a stranger was 80 I believe but that song or hell in a bucket is one of the best weir songs of all. But the late 80’s shows were for sure 100% the tours that had the most songs played, it was the age of the bust outs and the 70’s if you look at the set lists from the tours they played the same 20-25 songs maybe 30 but that’s it the played very similar shows each tour at each stop. Listen to all the Europe 72 shows, they aren’t that different, the same songs mostly played similar but in a different order but in the late 80’s you never knew what you were going to get, you could here anything pretty much, those tours had the biggest catalog of songs compared to any other era guaranteed. So idk it’s one thing to say the 50 best 70’s era of Keith era shows but not the 50 best dead shows because that’s a whole different book
