Not a Deadhead at all, but I interviewed Bob Weir in 1980. It was in a hotel room in Anchorage Alaska, on the 12th floor. Lesh was sitting next to an open window knocking back Heinekens. I will forever see him sitting there, green bottle in hand looking down through the open window. and I'm wondering when someone else in the room will be concerned he'll fall right out and go "splat". No one else cared. Goodbye, Phil. I wasn't really a fan, but I know a legend when I meet one. Au revoir.

Only the dead would have someone commented t this and type 2times how much thry loath the music. Like we black licorice ....one just can't get enough or one just vomits.
@derhandtrommler2 ай бұрын
@@Tryingtohaveselfcontrol That's the problem with Deadheads.It's just like MAGAs Either you swallow the thing whole or you're an ass hat. I own one Dead album (American Beauty) and hardly ever play it. But I respect certain talents within the band. Garcia played lead on a track by Warren Zevon that knocks me out. But I'd walk through sewage before I would have gone to a Dead show. Love The Allman Brothers Band, because they were interesting and used complex idioms when they jammed. The Dead just repeated simple ideas ad nauseam . Are you getting it ? I can like some of the elements without liking the finished product. That's probably a little sophisticated for your "Casey Jones" muddled grey matter. But I did my best.

A lot of the fans that joined in the 80's were unruly trouble makers. They just wanted to be part of something popular and i stopped going to the shows, partly because of them. RIP Phil, look for Jerry and Pig! 🌈

Saw my last show in 82 I was tired of that vibe and my life needed to change. I lie I on a lark went up to Highgate Vermont in 94 and saw them play to a massive crowd but I by then felt like an outsider/onlooker . Couldn’t believe what they and the scene had become with video screens and all to boot . Then Jerry passed the next year and that was it . I never felt compelled to attempt to recapture the magic of the heyday and try to get busted for good old times sake dawning a hideous commercially made Ben N Jerry’s tye dye t shirt . Nope not for me .

Wow, what a load of BS this is. Phil made hundreds of millions of dollars playing songs that he didn't write. After Jerry died Phil and his wife behaved so badly that the other band members could hardly stand to be anywhere near him. Notice that Phil's memorial concert played at the Sweetwater, no member of the Dead or Warren Haynes participated. He was known for underpaying his band members to enrich himself. Read "Fare Thee Well" for an eye opening history of what happened to the band when Jerry died.

one of my hero's When listening to the Grateful Dead he stands out and is just as important to listen to as Jerry Garcia. one of the greatest bass players who during the 60's when the bass was simply a time keeping back round filler instrument Phil was one of several seminal bass players all with unique styles who changed the way the instrument would be played in their genre's- Jack Casady, Larry Graham , Jack Bruce, John Entwistle and Phil Lesh.
@tro44042 күн бұрын
Except that the drummers would often complain that Phil would not land on the beat. He did that deliberately because, truthfully, he was an ass. Phil was a passable bass player. Remember, he made it up because he couldn't play at all when Jerry brought him on board. He also went through his "Heineken Phase" for several years. Drunk musicians are never remarkable musicians.
