Tributes paid to Celtic's Lisbon Lions legend Bertie Auld

Tributes have been paid to Bertie Auld, one of Celtic's European Cup heroes, who has died aged 83.
Auld, who was diagnosed with dementia in June, made history as part of Jock Stein's side as they became the first British club to win the European Cup with victory over Inter Milan in 1967.
The midfielder scored 85 goals in 283 appearances over two spells for Celtic.
John Hartson joined 'The Football Show' to discuss the legacy of the man dubbed 'Mr Celtic'

I have saw a few blue’s supporters say this shows you how good he was on park but its off it he was a god to us specially young fans even though we were not born, the amount a history,stories,films,doc on that team we feel so close to them and john says it perfect if bertie or any lion was to walk up celtic way with the current team all the younger gemeration and any fan run to lisbon lions before anyone they are in so high regard they were all best friends for life and just oure legends even shankly says they were best team in world during 60s in early 70s ! Did a coaching course at Celtic around 12 years ago and Bertie would routinely come around and speak to the group. He was hilarious and the most down to earth man. Rest in peace to a legend in every sense of the word 🍀

I was a Patrick Thistle fan and Bertie managed us and took is to the top of the premier league with a 9 game undefeated run. I still see him in the dug out with his big cigar. RIP bertie. A true football legend.

When Celtic did Europe.... A lot of non fans of this club became fans. it was an amazing time in Scottish football, and hard not to be a proud Scot, and just appreciate how Celtic had beat them all. I for one as a Rangers fan, always thought Bertie Auld played the game as a football player, never a raving in your face player that wanted to prove superiority. RIP Bertie Auld, you will always be a one of a kind Celtic and Scottish football giant, a legend indeed.

RIP Bertie. That particular year (1967), Celtic won every possible honour, Glasgow Cup, League, League Cup, Scottish Cup, European Cup, beat Man United 4-1, the team that would follow them to European success and of course beat Real Madrid in Di Stefano's testimonial at the Bernabau. Tam Cowan told a cracking story the other day. He had Bertie on his show a few years ago and said if you're gonna talk about the Lisbon Lions, give us a story we've never heard. Bertie thought then said "Well, I can tell you, one of the squad was gay". Tam and Stuart Cosgrove were desperate to know who but Bertie said he couldn't divulge then finally relented and said he'd whisper it in Tam's ear. He leaned in, gave him a big smacker on the cheek and burst out laughing. What a man :-) RIP

I remember meeting Bertie when me and my fiance' were getting tickets to a Celtic game and he said to my fiance' 'If I wasn't married, I'd have her myself'. He was gracious enough to take a picture with me and my fiance' and talk to us for a while and joke around and he was a true gentleman. He will be sorely missed. RIP Bertie Auld. With all due respect to the Celts, that Auld / Grieg story is based on the reality of a CFC management which underpaid their players, and certainly in relation to RFC players' wages. And of course, in Old Firm matches, no result was guaranteed, even in the Lisbon Lions' era where the Gers could always get up.
