This is pure gold. Great demo by an obvious experienced expert. My first go today laying 2-1/4" strip flooring had all the glue within the lines, no mess at all. No glue showing past the work, so ready for tomorrow. Saw the other video showing placement of the chalk line which is so helpful. Nice to be able to start and stop at will. Takes all the drama out of a potentially very messy enterprise. Much better info here than other videos, including slick manufacturer's. It helped that I have laid nail down strip and floating floors, as well as lots of trowel experience with tile, concrete, plaster, etc. But if you have the basic tool skills this is very easy to do and a real time saver. I did a pass "dry" to practice the strokes prior to pouring the glue which helped me a lot. Pay attention to how he moves backward and does the trowel pass. I'll add that you can do this technique using just one hand if you are not very ambidextrous, but it will be harder on your body.

He did a fantastic job and your tip on doing "test pass" was fantastic. When you have an inexperienced hand like mine, and you're laying down glue, it could end up sort of tragically with your new job cleaning up all the glue footprints instead of spending that time installing. Thanks to both of you guys.

This technique only is good for initial spread. But if you lay wider planks into this bed, you will entrap air, and it will prevent properly to spread the glue! Use this technique as just an initial spread, as it will allow you to go fast in controlled manner, then comb glue perpendicular to boards, starting from already laid planks to the mark. The initial spread will ensure you have a proper amount of glue, not too much, not too little, and when you comb, it will just re-distribute the glue, leaving nice straight, perpendicular to boards lines of glue with channels. Then, as you lay boards, most of the air will be able to escape, ensuring proper coverage. I've found this by initially following this man's suggestion, then noticed that squeeze out isn't that great at the edge of the board, ie the board was just floating on the top of the glue ridges.. Once I switched to proper way of spreading the glue, boards were sinking into the glue much much MUCH easier, and I finally saw proper squeeze out. BTW, using Bostik EPA, so it's a bit thicker glue, I suspect, still, same should apply to Mapei.

Hello, I have a question if I may. Some of the boards that I have are a little bent (bowed) either towards centre or one of the ends. Should all planks be absolutely straight or is there some tolerance level? There is quite a few of them and I wonder whether I should get them replaced or is it safe to use them This is glue down engineered hardwood oak. 20mm thick. 190cm long Thanks!

Hi , engineered hardwood boards has to be straight, it’s can be bended up and down but not to the sides. Sometimes in warehouse not ideal moisture and temperature, that’s why it can bending.

I'm building two slot car tables where I'll need to glue some sound board on top of the plywood top. One table is 16x4 and the other is 8x4. I'll be using some interior/exterior wood glue. I was looking for a good way to spread the glue. Your video was just what I was looking for! You made it look so easy! Thank you!! I did have one question and I understand if this is something you can't really answer. The total area of my table top is 96 square feet. I bought a gallon of the glue (not opened yet). Does that sound like it would be enough to cover or should I get a bigger container?

@MrYoucandoityourself 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Steve, all depends, what trowel you will use. On the cane you can read which one is spread for more, which one less. For 96 s.f. It’s not enough. Roughly, one gallon for 40 s.f. Is it clear? Thanks

I just paid a guy to install wood on my first floor. He didn’t do those lines, just applied glue on cement and flatted it out without your technique or lines. Is my floor messed up?
@MrYoucandoityourself
@MrYoucandoityourself 6 ай бұрын
I made this line because easy to control where I applied the glue, avoid step on it and make mess up on pre finished new hardwood floor. Also easy to work, because this line I can finish fast and stop working any time. I don’t need to clean up dried glue from subfloor on next day. In my comments I not criticize any one, just showing my technique and hope someone will do the job more clean and high end.

May I ask why are you using square notched trowel instead of the triangle notched glue spreader that mapei sells? Apart from the handle on top, do you think the triangles leave not enough glue?
@MrYoucandoityourself
@MrYoucandoityourself Жыл бұрын
I am using V- notched square trowels, because it’s giving to me higher glue grooves and less glue consumption. With triangles trowel very high glue consumption. I am only using it for gluing underlay or for spreading moisture protection. Thanks!

Hi friend. Nice job, I am wondering if you roll the floor or just weigh it down. I saw some people saying that you MUST roll them with a 100lb roller. What can you say about it?

How do you remove glue that got on the bamboo flooring ?
@MrYoucandoityourself

After 15 years of working with glue-down installation, usually, I don't make a mess. If it is happened, I remove some glue with wet napkin immediately and don't leave it for a long time.

The glue grooves should be at 90 degrees from wood direction so that when you lay the wood, the air can escape out the grooves as you do each section.

This is not true brother. Mapei does it the very same way he’s doing it in the video.

Hello! Thank you for all the great videos! I am about to try to replace several large areas of kitchen, hall and laundry room following water damage. Can you tell me what are the tools I will need and can you possibly direct me to any videos or suggest to me the best place to start replacing the wood. I am replacing tongue and groove engineered wood flooring. I appreciate your help so much!

Thanks for sharing your knowledge and skills. I have a question. When working on hardwood floor glue down, can I walk on it once I put them down? Because I have to walk on it to work on the next row.
