My group is about 12 strong. We call ourselves Basement Hammer because we play in my basement. We mostly play 40K, but we also have board and card games when other friends come out. We played Catan this past weekend while others hobbied. Luckily, my wife plays the other games outside 40k. But she loves hosting everyone and cooking for everyone. The oven pizza is a time honored tradition of our wargaming group. I guess I’m lucky - I have a standing 40k group where we meet up at one of our homes, play some games, and eat and drink. It’s been a while since we roped someone in, but we have recruited some folks this way. Maybe I need some Knights to help the newbies. Or maybe I just need friends that are susceptible to suggestion to join the game.

Before I got a job at GW I had to run the regional manager through a Demo game of 40k or WFB. It was a wild ride involving descriptions of gore and minimal dice rolling. The results of the dice rolls BARELY mattered. You rolled a six to hit with a sword?!? "The Tyranids head is cut clean off, acidic ichor sprays from alien arteries as the unknowable horror in the light of the monsters eyes fades." Good roll Timmy

I was intrested in 40k lore for a long while, one of my friends have been painting miniatures for over a year (board game/DnD minis). I wanted to try painting as well, but wanted to start cheap, so I looked up some Ork Boyz. My friend said, the 9th ed. starter set has better money-to-mini ratio, so we split the box. Then another box. Fast forward to a year later, 2 other friends already bought their first box of minis and we already had a group-painting session. I only wish we could play together more often...

I think PvE scenarios are a good starter as well. Not everyone likes to be competetive the more time and energy is required for a game. I have very good Zombicide sessions with friends, so I think they would like tabletop gaming, but I am too honest about the cost of the hobby which deters them.

Agreed, while I like to play one page rules instead of 40k. It can be really fun to make just a monster sized enemy and you and your allies job is to kill it. Put some random numbers on units in range and roll to see where the bugger is going lol.

I think a great way to get a civilian into anything warhammer-y would be to buy sheets of hex grid card, I know I've seen them in some games stores, stain them enough to look terrainy without obliterating the markings, and throw the ruler away. Playing with a ruler makes it a nerdy wargame. Counting spaces makes it a board game - and normies are comfortable with board games. And then you'll probably find that you yourself don't wanna play any other way after trying it! Maybe you could do a terrain build with a hex grid on it! Can you find a way to add the grid yourself? Airbrushing through a sieve, or something? 😀

*How to get people play miniatures in 4 Easy Steps* *_Step 1:_* Host at your place, set up a lovely display board with all the models/terrain painted, and have easy simple rules references all nearby and printed out. Set it up in a room where no one will got at first. *_Step 2:_* Invite friends around for a movie/series/video game night where you'll look at stuff related to the game material e.g. Judge Dredd for Necromunda. Make sure you only have enough drinks available so people can stay hydrated for about 80% of the movie, and mostly salty food, or food that will make people thirsty. Keep more drinks or snacks in the same room where the models and terrain are set up. Alcohol optional but recommended for step 3. *_Step 3:_* When friends get thirsty and drinks are gone, have 1 of them go to the room. They will spot the table and tell the others when they get back. Have everyone migrate to see, then let them play with the models or take pics. Offer to play a short simple version. Ideally keep drinking here and everyone should be more interested as they just watched a movie/series/gameplay. *_Step 4:_* This is the most *important* step. Make sure there is a device like an IPAD or laptop nearby with eBay open and some similar models searched. This can lead to drunk purchases/impulse buying of prebuilt and painted models (or anything that interest them). People are much more likely to stay invested if they spend some money.

Step 0. Know your audience. You need to pick the right folks for this project to avoid that issue. Bonus Step 0.5 - if you have a large pile of shame, incentivize with giveaway to make them want to come back. The money was a sunk cost because you bought way too much stuff, but now you’ve helped reduce the startup cost of that army.
