Alex Snodgrass has a very compelling way of explaining things that doesn't stand up to scrutiny. The "align the gullet with the top of the wheel" bit made me roll my eyes.

+Matthew Reed not sure what you mean.
@tonyy54826 жыл бұрын
Just behind the bottom of the gullet on the crown (i.e. the raised middle) on the top of the top wheel is what he recommended, as best I can recall. What didn't you like Matt?

I have a 14 inch delta and tried everything on utube to get a straight cut and no good, had the drift going on so bad I was going to sell it and then I met Alex at a wood show and watched his work and had a long talk with him, he set me up with the guide kit and showed me what to do and man I can cut paper thin sheets of any kind of wood, I was so excited I went back to the show the next day to shake his hand and picked up the guide for tight tunes and it works great, it’s like having a new saw, I don’t know why anyone wouldn’t buy this it is like magic, I’m using my bad saw more than my table saw, it’s unbelievable

As I watched this guy install these parts, I could quickly see the high level of dexterity and competence in his motions. Seeing him actually use the saw confirmed it. He has been around the block a few times.

Seeing him do it in person is kind of jaw dropping. If you have a chance to watch his demonstration at one of The Woodworking Shows it's well worth the time.

Thanks guys. I watched Alex's video and reset my Laguna 14" and for the first time in a long long time there was no drift! I wish I could afford the Carter bearings. Keep up the great info.

I inherited an old reliant (junk brand I know) and seldom used it because of drift and vibration. I put carter guides and tires dust brush on it, and it cuts like a champ. There is no drift or vibration any more. It was worth every penny.

I have used Carter guides on band saws for decades and when they make mounting for most any band saw there is no reason to not use Carter guides. I am also a fan of the Carter steady rest for a wood lathe. Carter Products are the best!

I look into to the Carter guide kit for my 14" bandsaw and after considering the price I decided instead order a brand new seal bearings and blade and fallow Alex tips about the correct way to set up you machine and put my saw to the test and the results were remarkable so I will stay with the original blade guide and just invest on new well sharp blades is much chipre and the results are the same .

Question for those in the know. When putting a 3/4" blade on the same 14" Powermatic how is it possible to center gullets on top wheel when the standard thrust bearings wont adjust back far enough?
@johnp18394 жыл бұрын
Which carter guide replacement fits the PM1500? I didn't see one on their website & I like the carter barrel-nut design vs the standard PM guide on that saw.

You might check with them. If I remember correctly, the one they sent me initially did not fit so they had to send a second one with the smaller bearings.

Carter makes guides for most brands of band saws that are designed for each particular brand and in some cases, the model. For example, a kit for a Jet saw will not work on a Powermatic or a Delta.

Wish I could find a really good independent review of Carter guides. I am sure they are quality made but are they really worth the price? Sure, if you have a bunch of cash to spend then paying the price for a bit of an improvement might be worth it, but is the improvement you get really worth nearly $400 (Laguna 14/12).

I've got a Laguna 16, (Meber 400) , spent the big bucks on the Carter guides, ( which have cam type side rollers) what a project , are you serious? 5 different size hex keys to adjust them ! Their showman Alex suggests removing the table to make it easier, maybe, but not easy to reinstall it. After an hr and a half I'm ready to cut some wood, just hoping I don't have to switch to a different width blade and have to start over

Cool guides but my completely "stock" Craftsman 14" Bandsaw has bearings that are sealed and re-packable and uses the barrel screws adjustment, granted they aren't 30,000 RPM bearings but since they will never spin that fast nor do they slow the blade down due to the lower efficiency I don't see how these guides can be all that much better.
@daviddavis56897 жыл бұрын
I have same craftsman and Carter micro adjust. So much easier to adjust precisely and with 1/2 inch blade so much better supported with the two bearings per side. Combine with blade gullet centered on top tire and its cuts with no drift as Snodgrass said.

Hey Marc, I can't afford the Carter bearings but I've been wanting to upgrade the bearings on my 14" Grizzly bandsaw. I was looking at guide blocks and am considering two options: Cool Blocks or Spaceage Ceramic Guideblocks. The Cool blocks are self lubricating, but the ceramic blocks are supposedly wear proof and claim to remove resin buildup from the blade. Can you recommend one or the other?

Why do guys make such ridiculously embarrassing thumbnails. Remember about telling a book by it’s cover. Your material looks foolish, and unprofessional at first glance.
