At 8:00, actually the quieter I am, the lower ratings I get! I tend to get 5 star ratings when "I" initiate a conversation by asking "Hows your day?" or "How are you doing?". Most people are an open book and will tell you things you didn't ask about. They are more likely to give you that five star if you just listen to them and have a nice conversation! Stay away from religion and politics! That is a must! And if they get political with you, don't voice your opinions! Just agree and try to move on to another topic!

If you drive for both Uber/Lyft (I only drive for Lyft)I recommended not switching back and forth between the app you will make less money. The algorithm has a delay so everytime you turn off an app you are losing time when you turn it back on. Lyft and Uber dont want you sitting because they are also losing money. If you are in an area for more than 10 minutes without a ride...MOVE!

Regarding what you claim about an algorithm causing a delay, I have often been pinged within moments of going online. If there was such an algorithm it doesn't seem to exist now (August 2019).

You have some good and helpful information in this video. However, telling us to treat people like kids is horrible advice. How about act like an adult, be kind and respectful to others, engage the passenger, find out what they're interested in, have a good conversation (unless they're obviously not interested), make them glad they got to ride with you?
@Jeffstorm78
@Jeffstorm78 6 жыл бұрын
Sean - totally agree. Once you start thinking or treating passengers as an adversary, your attitude will start to show and you make the passengers not care even more. I think there is nothing wrong with a passenger being OK with a 12 minute short ride. It's unfortunate for the driver but it's on UBER to pay us more for that by increasing the time compensation. If UBER's algorithms were programmed to increase per minute payout when the average speeds are lower than a set average, that would be the most fair for the driver - agree?

This is really good, and useful, other than your anger and impatience stuff 😉. Have you written an e-book / PDF of best practices and tips and tricks? Do you cover whether there's a way when one app is slow to pop between Lyft vs Uber driving? Also are there great websites or reddits about drive heat maps for each City, where to hang out and wait? Peace

Some good advise. I personally shut down after 2100 so I don't have to deal with the drunk crowd or try to find address in the dark. But I know those who do really earn their money. How do you 'move away' while giving people rides? Just take ones in a certain direction? About going off-line when surges start so they build. I heard that groups of drivers may do this then go online all at once, and for that UBER will kick you off the service. Not sure about 'single' drivers doing this, but why risk it? Being in the heart of rush hour when it starts? My personal experience with that is that even with surges, traffic is so slow that I can only do two short rides in downtown for every hour. Hence why I generally avoid the heart of rush hour.

I whole heartedly disagree with you about night driving. In the beginning I used to drive from when people went home from work until people left for work. One day I decided to change it up and start in the morning and I made significantly more money driving during the day.

Homeboy sounds like one of those creepy guys who snack on popcorn in his car at the local park. Also, talking to normal people like children is probably why you’re getting the low ratings in the first place. Secondly, driving around aimlessly doesn’t do anything productive except beat up your car and waste gas.

I drive for long rides here in the San Francisco Bay Area! Long rides here start at around 3AM to 4AM in the morning out here in wine country! A good 60 to 90 mile trips all the way down to SFO and OAK! I pull in about $900/week with only 20 rides a week and about 25 hours a week! The mornings are usually very busy especially on a Sunday and Monday mornings because most drivers are at home in bed from driving the night before!

I work in Indianapolis and we only I get paid $0.60 a mile! So unless you're getting paid big money during Surge and you're driving that person a long-distance you're never going to make $35 an hour especially when you subtract the amount of gas that you're using!
@hellasow
@hellasow 5 жыл бұрын
0.60 a mile times 60 miles is 36.00 plus 11.00 for an hour of time and 1.13 for a base ride...You could make 48.00 an hour if you were on the highway for an hour...but not likely...You could probably make 35.00 of 2 or 3 hours during surging hours but that is about it realistically.

Great information. But, at 6:00 your idea that "fishing" increases your chances of getting a good ride is rather easily shown to be false. Assuming you are not purposefully heading to an area where you are more likely to get a ping, your chances of cruising a highway or freeway moving swiftly TOWARD a rider who is about to make a request, are the same as your chances of quickly moving AWAY from a rider about to make a request. A driver who parks himself (with his car turned off) in an area known for high numbers of request, is likely to get a request sooner than the rider who randomly prowls the freeway. And that parked driver won't be burning two to four gallons of fuel per hour while waiting for a ping.

In order to make $35 an hour you have to have someone in the car and be driving for 45 minutes of that hour... Leaving just 15 minutes for pickups and driving to the pickup destination... Conclusion? You don't drive for rideshare.
@autisticcommando86
@autisticcommando86 6 жыл бұрын
That actually leaves 20 minutes for pickups, because we get pickup fees at a little over $2 and you have to account for the per-minute amounts. Now, if you are waiting several minutes between rides, then this kills your hour. Line rides take out the per-minute fee, as they only earn 5 cents per minute, so it takes 20 minutes to earn a dollar. There is also supplementation if you ever catch a next ride in a guarantee zone.

Half of it is what city you drive in. It's impossible in some places to hit 35/hr, and it's easy as pie in other areas to break 45/hr. The only way to find out if you can do it, is to get out and drive! Learn your area, it's cycles and where passengers are that need long drives.

He’s right about the pool rides. I did a pool ride with a total of 6 people that took one hour and 7 minutes to complete in the rain and all that I was paid through Lyft was $10.37. I went through all that stress, Use my own gas and put all those miles on my car for only $10.37?!. The only time pool is worth it is when you have to complete a certain amount of rides to make a goal for a bonus but other than that, NOT worth it.

Thanks for the tips. Yeah, I agree, best places to pickup are in the city’s hotels. Why? Many times, these people need to be dropped off to the airport. That’s about 25 minutes away. I always make sure that these people need to be there at airport on time so that they won’t miss their flights. Also right about the rush hours. Sometimes at 5pm or 10pm where people clock out from work. The worse pickups that I hate are when picking them up at APARTMENTS. Why’s that? Cuz google map directions can be confusing to exact location of where the person is standing. What I learned is that Lyft’s map shows the person’s standing but i need to focus on the Lyft’s app of where the person is, not where the person is standing. I believe google map needs to be upgraded. What do you think 🤔? Hope I’m clear.

I have made many suggestions to Lyft to improve, hoping they will listen. There are too many drivers for the number of riders in my capital city with a major university (I'm NOT in a major metro area like NYC, LA or Chicago). If Lyft would limit the number of drivers based on demand, then maybe we could make a decent living. It's not unusual to go over an hour without a ride and it doesn't matter if I move or sit still. I keep track in Excel of every day's driving. Since April 1, 2018, I average ONLY 2.8 rides per hour, and I drive at different hours throughout the day. Most of the time I drive between 8pm and 3am because there are fewer drivers as it gets later. After deducting for the gas I use each day, I average ONLY $14.24/hour. If I take out tips, I average only $10.41/hour. I STRONGLY suggest Lyft pay more per mile, like $0.30 - $0.50/mile and add more for long trips over 25 miles, like charging the $1.96 XL rate per mile for long trips. This would help pay for gas for the return. Lyft also needs to adjust what they pay as gas prices rise. Also, there are SOOO many horrible Lyft/Uber drivers, it's ridiculous. Many of them should be banned from driving. ie: headlights/taillights out, turning right against a NO TURN sign, speeding, stopping on busy roads when there's clearly NO STOPPING signs, etc. So far, Lyft is better than Uber as far as support and I can talk to an English-speaking American here in the US on the phone. I made more money driving for Uber because of it's popularity here and for the numerous surges (when they pay for them). However, I don't drive for Uber any longer after I caught them stealing from me 4 different ways. How? 1) They weren't paying surge rates when it was clearly surging before and after rides were accepted by me. 2) Trips were magically disappearing from my log before I cashed out for the night. 3) They weren't paying for cancellations, so I started taking screen shots as proof I was there for 5+ minutes before cancelling, and 4) they entirely didn't pay me for a trip to Chicago (over 200 miles ONE WAY), ending the trip about 2/3 of the way there. 7 hours and 450+ miles and paying for my own gas and they rip me off!! I gave them over 5,000 trips with a 4.92-star rating and they STILL had the nuts to steal from me. And their "customer service" is on the other side of the world working for $1/hour and can only be contacted by email and don't have a grasp on the English language and do not know how to appropriately respond to an issue. I will NEVER say anything good about Uber. rant over.

Why are you pushing this? Uber completely sucks now! They take 42% to 64% of the ride money from the driver! And now pay 11 cents a minute. Your time is worth less then minimum wage! Get in a accident? You Pay the first $1,000.00 out of your own pocket! Lyft is even worse. You pay the first $2,500.00 out of Your own Pocket. Try paying for gas, insurance, etc out of your 89 cents a mile! Uber really sucks now.

Then you are doing something wrong and driving in the wrong areas. I drive 7 to 10 hours Thurs to Sunday and make close to $1500. If you only drive a Uber X, you will be somewhat limited. If you have an XL or Premium car, and drive in affluent areas or the "hot Spots"on the weekends, you will do better. There are nights I came home with over $800 after driving 10-11 hours. I average around $400-$450 if I'm driving smart. Holidays you can make a killing.

I have a real job and don’t give a fuck. So, if someone pops up ON MY WAY to do MY BUSINESS... it’s an easy way to make a couple bucks towards gas. That’s it. End of story.

I have heard that banks are starting to refuse to finance cars for people who list Uber or Lyft as their income source (and what bank in its right mind would want to loan money on a car that's going to have 4 times the mileage, wear and tear as is normal?). But I fail to see why a mortgage bank would discriminate based on the source of self employment income (assuming it is a legitimate, legal source of income). But, on the other hand, once the 55 cent per mile mielage deduction is made on our taxes, most of us aren't showing enough net income to qualify for a mortgage on a typical house anyway. LOL Full time successful driver gross income: $4000/month Miles driven per month: 4000/month Standard Mileage Deduction at $0.55 per mile: $2200/month Deductible Cell Phone and Cell Phone Bill per month: $110/month Net (taxable) income per month: $1690 And this assumes the driver takes the bare minimum deductions on his income. There are many others that can be taken (clothing, equipment such as dashcam, etc.). Unless you plan to live in a ghetto or a really bad part of the Appalachians, you're not going to getting a Mortgage based on rideshare income. :-(

I totally agree about treating the passengers like kids. They truly are and no matter what you are wrong in their eyes. I literally stopped in front of one of the passengers once in a private street in front of their home, but on the right side while they were standing on the left. With the window down, they asked me if I was here to pick them up with a normal voice. I answered yes, and they said “well are you coming or not?” Mind you, they did not want to walk 5 feet to the other side, no i had to make a tight U turn, backing up and going forward a few times to fit through the street just so they don’t have to move their precious feet. Yes, you have to treat them like royalty for a 2 dollar ride 😒

I just watched your video and I must say I'm insulted by what you said I live Less Than 3 miles away from my job I have bad legs and I'm unable to walk or ride a bike so I'm forced to use Uber I have seen surges go up to $42 just to go 3 miles and I do realize you need to make a living all drivers do but listening to how you're talkin about us the client really just upsets me even more when it comes to Uber they take advantage of people 3 miles $42 that's crazy I could get a limousine for less than thank God I've never had you for a driver and I hope I never do because we're not children we're paying clients and we deserve respect just as you deserve it so mind what you say about us word gets out quick

I understand and my heart goes out to you.Uber takes 45 percent of the drivers pay.So, out of that 42 dollars.The driver gets around $25.So, basically the driver is getting screwed both ways.Picking up a cheap passanger ordering during surge and complaining at the same time.All while Uber is taking half the pay.

Good advice but it only would work in a high volume area. I may try the strategy of being on around 3pm, make a little money. I'm also a quiet person and I don't engage them in conversation unless they do. Not gonna be the guy who talks their ear off when they don't want to be bothered.

yep. People get off work at factories, medical facilities, malls, restaurants from 9 pm to 7 am. Small neighborhood "dive" bars have regulars who head in and out between 9 pm-2 am. Denny's, IHOP, Waffle House, Walmart, Jack in the box are open 24 hours. Taco Bell workers are off around 12-2 am. People head in to work 2nd shift at 11 pm. Folks also head in to work 3 am-5 am. College eateries & libraries close around 12 am. 1st airport runs start around 3 am especially now that the govt. is shut down & TSA is govt. Some Dialysis places open around 5 am. ER is 24 hrs. and discharges folks at night or whenever. YEP

Do you have any videos about handling the tax end of this? Do you have a cpa? I've heard some people say, "if you're doing it right you won't have to pay any taxes, " what do you think? Thanks

@Jeffstorm78 6 жыл бұрын
I wonder about this myself. It would not be an easy calculation, but I think it is possible. I speculate that the only way this could work (pay no taxes) is if you deduct mileage for "seeking rides" and not just the mileage with passengers in the car like which I think I recall reading both UBER and Lyft state or at least suggest. They also leave themselves an "out" by saying "consult your professional tax advisor for tax information". If you are adding significant miles for those "in between rides", your tax benefits increase the more economical your vehicle is per mile.

Eric Black Yes, I paid a net of $60 in federal and California state taxes. I paid roughly $250 Federally and received a ~$173 California tax return and I had a pretty good first year with Uber all things considered. The people who claim Uber is a scam don't understand their taxes and how deductions/expenses work for your business. My example only applies to those who are averaging good money and making the most of their miles (as close to $1 per driving mile, with or without passengers). Record all your miles manually, all the miles of working from when you leave your house to when you finish for the day.
@RMBII91
@RMBII91 6 жыл бұрын
Eric Black You also need to record your non business miles if you're using one car for business and pleasure. You need to keep these records in case you are audited by the IRS.

I wonder if you get to deduct maintenance and repair expenses...That plus mileage, or gas receipts if you have a low mileage vehicle, should bring you down to zero tax liability..
@shockawha9

Once you turn on app, that mileage is deductible, so are car washes and all the accessories you buy for customer. Trumps new tax plan helps too! 25% of income is tax deductible! I can make $1500 in one month and Net is -140 LOL
