This still works, you tap the time at the top of the screen, not the time stamp of the message. I had been doing this on accident for a long time and found this video to discover why.

MTBing4LIFE Ya I Did , I had to go into settings and reset all settings. Now when a notification pops up I put my finger on it pull it down a bit and flick it up and it goes away.
