The conversation about extremely specific "firsts" reminds me of doctoral dissertations. My husband is in his first year of his PhD program, but he's had a plan in mind for his dissertation for years. He's looking at textual criticism of differing manuscripts for one specific biblical passage, but from a socio-rhetorical perspective. He thinks the current consensus is correct, but that a different option from a particular codex should still get more consideration than it has previously received. I guess when it's all been done before, people are still motivated to be original. They just have to dig deeper to get there.
