Pyrion's comment on causality breaking at beyond the speed of light is in fact physics approved.

I'll get the ball rolling:- Ummm Pflax, I think you''l find that actually, as you approach the speed of light, you need to provide more energy, specifically in the form of mayonnaise, and this requirement increases exponentially the closer you get to the speed of light. Eventually the amount of mayonnaise required exceeds the total quantity of mayonnaise present in the universe.

What Sir Forsyth was half-remembering was relativity of simultaneity (events generally don't happen in the same order in all frames of reference), which you don't need to know about to realize why you can't travel faster than light. Working in a single frame of reference, an object with mass would need an infinite amount of energy to reach light speed. But then you might think, well what if I have two rockets, one attached to the other. The first one is going at half the speed of light, and then the other one takes off at slightly over half the speed of light, surely that rocket would be going over the speed of light, right? Well it's important to keep track of what frame of reference each velocity is measured in. The second rocket may take off at slightly over half the speed of light in the first rocket's frame of reference, but when you translate back to your frame of reference you'll find that it's actually only going slightly over 80% the speed of light in your frame of reference, and there's in fact no frame of reference where it's going over the speed of light as can be seen from the formula for translating velocities between frames of reference.

There are ways to travel faster than the speed of light that physicists have come up with. The most famous one is the Alcubierre drive that doesn't push you through space faster than light, but (basically, i don't know a ton abt it tho) warps space around you so you're in a little bubble of not-space, and then that bubble can travel as fast as you want! the only problem it requires negative mass and/or negative energy, which is currently believed to be impossible to actually achieve in our universe. however, the math all works, which is a promising sign that maybe one day in the far future it could be possible.
@sam236963 жыл бұрын
The Alcubierre Drive uses physics that is only theoretical and doesn't actually exist in reality, that is how it is able to circumvent the laws of physics. It's basically using math to cheat, but in the realm of applied mathematics you can't cheat. It's possible we might find a way to apply it, but generally the theory behind negative mass simply stems from inverting the sign of a number, it's not based on any real world physics. Technically doesn't create a bubble of not space, it actually warps local spacetime around the craft, pulling the craft through space _without_ any acceleration. The problem with this is in order to achieve that effect of spatial translation it has to contract spacetime in front of it, like gravity, which is not an issue, and expand space behind it, which has never been observed and like you say, the math requires negative mass. We have a lot of math used in theory, and a lot of theoretical physics that is able to use negative mass in equations without any issue, but none of that is applied mathematics or physics, it doesn't exist in the real world.

The speed of light being a maximum is a requirement for simulteneity to occur. If at one point in space and time you get a collision, EVERY OBSERVER HAS TO SEE IT THE SAME WAY. The Sagan series Cosmos puts it fairly well, the scene before the moped, the famous relativistic one, the one where Sagan is riding a bike and "dodges an oncoming horse-and-cart".

But let´s say it's travelling at light speed -1 mph and I stroll leisurely from the back of the rocket to the front at 2 mph. Am I travelling faster than light than? Yea u can't go faster than the speed of light for a couple reasons, 1 is because mass and energy are linked, the faster u go the heavier u become till u reach the speed of light where u have an infinite mass and therefor it requires an infinite amount of energy to get u faster, the other one being relativity, the closer u get to the speed of light the more time slows, at the speed of light time is at a complete standstill for you
