A lot of the reason vegan's don't want to eat eggs is because of the production cycle of eggs. All hatched male chicks from laying breeds get thrown into giant meat grinders as soon as they have been sexed, as they are a waste product of the industry and due to being a laying breed can't / won't be used for meat. Many vegans I know will eat eggs but only from people they know or local farms, where they can see the conditions the chickens are in. In the UK most of the "organic" labeling on the packaging is to do with food standards rather than being cruelty free. Hope this gives you an insight into the vegan mind!

It's not vegan to eat eggs (Plant based in that case). But yeah, the production is inherently cruel. To chime in with another few facts. Most chickens are bred to produce more eggs (Than the average chicken, an unnatural amount). So it takes a strain on their body, similar to cows in the dairy/beef industry, similar to lambs in the wool industry. Everything for efficiencies sake and that somehow justifies the cruelty in farmer/carnists eyes. The other thing is, buying eggs of any sort is a red flag, especially when you don't need them to live or even experience taste pleasure. Black salt exists, eggy taste. There's nice egg yolk alternatives too (Avacados are decent, there's some mixes etc). So it's best to give eggs you find from rescue chickens, to the public, to stop them funding their suffering. Final point is if you don't need animals for taste pleasure or nutrition, you don't need to eat animals/animal products. I've given massive life long meat eaters some meat alternatives and they couldn't believe it's vegan. They actually want to dip twice because of how good these alternatives taste.

To add to the people who have in great detail already explained why a vegan doesn't eat egg, modern day chicken can't keep up with their own egg production. They can get easily deficient in numerous nutritions and even die in some cases due to the eggs getting stuck in their body. To combat defiance's in pet/rescue chickens it's common to take their eggs and either mash them up or cook them and feed it back to them. It's also common to chemically castrate them so that they stop producing eggs all together for their own health. And as a final point, backyard hens aren't necessarily ethical either depending on how those hens were acquired. In order to have, say, 6 hens in someone's backyard they would be 6 roosters unaccounted for. The roosters have in many cases been killed off so even if you get 6 egg-laying hens they're in a person possession through cruel practices.

48:59 I remember hearing or reading somewhere once that some of this increased notion of individuals being aware and responsible for our society’s climate impact was the idea of some marketing executives at the oil firms in the late 90s early 2000s. That it would soften their image and show they ‘cared’ by highlighting how it is our use of their product causing the impact. Think BP had a ‘Calculate your carbon footprint’ as one of the first interactive webpages on it in the 2000s.

Yeah these campaigns are designed to convince people they personally have responsibility for climate change. When in fact most waste, plastics, rubber and so on is industrial waste. You should turn the lights off in your home, don't waste water, use air conditioning minimally, meanwhile down the street is a warehouse storing perishables in a building sized freezer running 24/7, and an entire industrial sector that churns through more water in a day then your suburb uses in a year. Use biodegradable bags and cutlery and straws because this rubbish gets into the environment. But most of that is because it blew off the landfill down the street, not because people discarded it there.

He's old and uninterested. That's why they've gone over the vegan shtick 50 times in the podcast. I even specifically recall one time they were talking about the differences between veggy and vegan, then pyrion googled the etymology of vegan to find its just a contraction from VEGetarianAN because they opt out of animal products entirely. I also specifically recall an extended discussion about honey, where pyrion is surprised its not vegan, the others say its an animal product and they have a funny discussion about the cognitive capacity of a bee to complain about his honey being knicked, then unionising to avoid exploitation by the apiarists. So they have definitely qualified the no meat/no animal products before.

Modern chickens used in egg production have been bred to lay has many eggs as possible as big as possible. They don't lay eggs like a normal animal would. This takes a toll on the animals body. That is why eggs can be considered to still be "cruel" just like breeding pugs is cruel, fucking thing can barely breathe.

Sorry im two weeks late but, Pyrion, it's not hard, idk where Lewis is coming from he didn't do a good job explaining it, it's not a health thing, it's entirely a moral thing. If an animal is created just to be exploited for your taste buds it's immoral. Hens suffer just existing. Do you think laying an egg per day is normal or pleasant? If every bloke eats 2-4 eggs per day that's 4 chicken caged out there being bread just for that one guy. I'm not an expert but laying so many eggs is extremely taxing on their body, completely depletes them of calcium, results in broken bones, wounds etc...They are enslaved to lay, suffer through it until they can't, and then they are killed. Plus, when they are breeding laying hens, if the chicks are male, they are just thrown on a belt straight to a grinder.

The problem vegans have with eggs is this: to produce eggs on a mass scale you have to farm chickens. Vegans object to any practice which requires any form of animal farming. Also chickens have been bread to produce more eggs than they should, be bigger than they should. Modern chickens have all kinds of health problems as a result of our interference. I love chickens. They are very funny. Bit they're a health nightmare.

Pyrion on chicken eggs: "You don't have to be mean to them, eggs just come out!" The problem is that people are mean to them, even if they don't have to. If people weren't mean to chickens and cows, vegans wouldn't mind milk and eggs. But people are mean to them in order to maximize milk and egg production, which is why it is a problem. Organic farms aren't a lot better. The chickens have been bred to lay an unnatural amount of eggs. You know how much women suffer because of their periods? Imagine that whole week packed into a single day, and that day is every day. In regards to Pyrion's argument about customers, the companies aren't only motivated by customers. If that was the case, child prostitutes would be a lot more common. When a lot of people find something appalling, laws and regulations are made to limit the appalling things. It doesn't matter how many would buy the product. If more conscientious and caring people stopped eating eggs, and only self-centered people Pyrion kept eating them, it wouldn't affect the treatment of the animals in a negative way. Because more people would care, the laws around it would be stricter, and therefore the chickens would experience less abuse. A second factor is that if sales and profits dip, companies will not have to keep up with the demand that motivates them to commit cruel practices. If sales dip because the practice is cruel, the companies will be motivated to not be. They'll want to advertise that their eggs are not cruelly sourced, but their competitors' are. This is the whole strategy behind ecological farming. And don't worry, you can still have pancakes. The magical recipe for pancakes without eggs is: don't put eggs in them. The egg does nothing. Also eggs taste and smell like fart, and it comes out of an animal's ass. Idk why anyone would eat eggs, regardless of morals. The thing about Pyrion, is that he's the classical Karen for anyone who's ever worked in customer service. He, like all Karens, only cares about what he wants, and in his mind, the entire universe revolves around what he wants. It the logic behind stuff doesn't matter at all, because he only sees one argument: "I want this thing." and every argument to make that happen. He doesn't accept anything but the argument that gives him his will.

I'm not even Vegan and I find the idea of eating eggs quite off-putting. I don't avoid it as an ingredient in food I buy, but I haven't bought eggs to prepare something in over 10 years. I think it's just a mindset you get used to, where you actually think about what you're eating and are honest with yourself about whether it bothers you or not. Some people it does some it doesn't.
