There is basically an entire episode of Mythbusters about landing an 747 with no experience, while being talked through it by a pilot/air traffic. Both Jaime and Adam successfully landed the plane (full simulation) from memory, I don't think its as outrageous as they make it out to be in this episode.

Tom Scott also made a yt video about it! I believe with the guidance system he landed it easily but with no guidance he could not find the runway safely and would possibly have landed but very roughly at best 😂

Yeah, from memory the primary issue when it comes to no experience flying is if anything beyond the basic controls happens that needs to be addressed as they land they are fucked. Like turning the aircraft and operating the throttle, pressing the button for gear or whatever people can handle. Things like cross winds, landing in stormy or low visibility conditions or just anything technical with the aircraft, there's no chance. The second the need to press some button on the panel comes up they are screwed, panic will set it or they'll take too long to figure it out. But also this kind of thing, almost a trope in movies or TV, dates back to the 80s and 90s when aircraft were more manual. Every advancement they make to aircraft makes them easier to fly.

Yeah, on top of that there are multiple instances of people with no experience landing planes with air traffic control assistance. It absolutely can be done and has been done.

In fact I found the absolute cool confidence of the instructors far more impressive. Honestly, something about the fact that it WASN'T flashy, just something he's done a million times, makes it far more "cool" to me.

Can't speak to a 747 but I can say, the average single engine aircraft say, a Cessna, is ridiculously easy to fly. I had a scholarship to get my pilots license and did all the prerequisites but unfortunately was disqualified from the program due to medication I was on at the time

Air conditioners shouldn't need to be fixed that often! Not even once a year. I live in Tennessee. Between the heat and humidity, it's incredibly miserable sometimes. As much as landlords get away with, functioning air conditioning is considered required. We've had to have it fixed multiple times a summer sometimes. One time it took a week. If we'd known it was going to be so long, I'm sure we could have made them pay for us to stay at a motel. BUT. The problem is that they weren't actually fixing it. Among other problems, there are leaks, so they just kept adding Freon. We finally have owners now who don't seem to just want to coast until they sell it again in a year. The maintenance people were pretty horrified to see what condition it was in and have promised to replace the whole thing as soon as they can.

I wonder how big they think a deer actually is, are they confusing them with moose? I mean technically those are deer as well but I immediately think of like a female fallow deer. Those only weigh 40 kg or so? Yes, most people probably can kill a lightly built animal half their weight. It would probably hurt them in the process but that is another question entirely.

In Florida, I used to live in a house without any AC for 2 years. We used fans all the time. I slept with 2 fans pointing at me the entire night and I'd still be just sweating and tossing and turning. It was terrible, especially during summer.

@@thefinal9923 Oddly enough, my brother loved the heat. He used a portion of the house that was converted from a garage into a Florida room of sorts with two of the walls being made almost entirely of windows. It was like a greenhouse and he took it as a bedroom with no access to the central AC when that was finally fixed. 🤷‍♂️

the major difference that may occur between maths if we encounter an intelligent society is the numerical base. We use a base 10 system, so there are 10 steps at each tier (10 1s in 10, 10 10s in 100, etc). They will probably use a different numerical base, for example 7 or 12, and that may present a "translation" challenge
@Home-u6g
@Home-u6g 5 ай бұрын
It's really not a challenge, humans use base 2 and base 16 all the time too without much translation difficulty

23:30 Lewis saying "1 thing per day on holiday" and Boba saying she was run down 'cause of Lewis is pretty funny. EDIT: Also, I agree with Lewis, but unfortunately most politicians, you know, the people out of touch with reality, already think future tech will save us. That's why they don't do anything anymore except helping out their mates. Labour is literally running on the "don't want to give unfounded hope" slogan this time around, because they know they'll win by default, and promise nothing in regards to climate change or green proposals, except perhaps ULEZ.

religious, anti scientific aliens could get into space easily by just spending a longer time evolving and eventually getting there. technological progress wasn't dead during the dark ages, it was just much slower than in the later rennaissance age. also there's probably other ways they could figure out how to technologically progress that we can't conceive of

i dont think theyre really conceptualizing how different an alien culture could possibly be, i think it'd be really easy for an alien civilization to not perceive math the same as us

If the plane is not significantly damaged and it is equipped with auto-pilot (which is already activated), it definitely is possible to land it as a passenger with no experience with help from ATC. However, it is not ATC who will give you instructions. Usually they will contact another pilot of that type of plane to come into the tower and talk to you. It was done before and it was proven many times to be real. On the flip-side, if you have to manually fly the plane, then that will be a lot harder and it has a very low rate of success (even with help from ATC). I highly recommend everyone to try out a real aircraft simulator sometime (not some Star Wars games, one where real pilots train) to see what I mean. Not only to prove something, but also because it is a very cool and rewarding experience.

Just one thing about the speculative alien understanding of maths. There's an underlying assumption that is ignored here. 1+1 may always be 2, but what are you actually talking about? You're talking about things, so it's reliant on conceptualization. One thing plus one thing equals two things. The assumption is that aliens would conceptualize "things" similarly to we do, but I don't think that the way that we conceptualize things is universal at all. Hell, we don't even conceptualize things consistently. One thing plus one thing may be two things, but it can also be a pair, or half a quartet.

😂 Its funny how you guys are in such a bubble thinking flying is some magical thing only few can do, its not that hard if you have just a slight idea on what you are doing. What is different between a car and a plane really is the up and down part, everyone that can drive, read numbers of an altimeter and compass (in this case a heading indicator) can land modern planes. ILS auto land has been around for a long time even the Mirage 2000 has it and that was built in the 90s

i think a non pilot with good instructions could maybe pull of a crash landing but i would absolutely think that any member of the cabin crew would be way more qualified to do it than some random fucking passenger , and i think it would be insane to let a random passenger control a plane t and even more so to let them attempt an actuall landing like at an airport i think theyd sooner blow that plane to pieces than do that

Ok, not to spam comments, but I've been the front man for a local HC/punk/metal band for over 20 years. One time, during a performance, a random woman made her way to the front of the stage, casually reached up, and cupped my entire package. She held the posture for a moment while she looked back at her friends, then let go, and disappeared back into the audience, never to be seen again.

Ok, so all language is based on some degree of logical structure (otherwise, it wouldn't work). All mathematics is reducible to logic (Bertrand Russel). So therefore, shared mathematic knowledge can be used to make some kind of shared linguistic knowledge.
