Dom Joly is, for my money, the greatest prankster out there. His pranks are hilarious - but they transcend even that. They're literally art. And a lot of them are a scathing critique or statement on aspects of society - think the rude phone guy, or the jobsworth traffic warden. Absolute genius stuff.

The concept and execution certainly is, genuinely, Art. Obviously it was a collective, with purpose, directed by Dom Joly - but, similarly, "Dom Joly", at his height, has much more in common with, "Banksy", Tati, or the Dadaists, than he has with any of the legion of infantile and inane imbéciles you can find on TikTok and KZbin, simply annoying people by screaming on a train.

The ones that cracked me up the most are the ones where he’s a police man walking in the park, then approaches an elderly couple and asks “excuse me, I’ve had reports of two elderly people setting off fireworks in the park and a Catherine wheel”. Hilarious when you think how it’s making them feel, they would be thinking does this policeman REALLY think we would set off fireworks in the park 😂😂😂😂 And the one where he’s pretending to be an old man taking ages to cross the road, a guy on a motorbike gets off his bike to help him across the road, as soon as he reaches the pavement, he stands bolt up right and marches off 😂😂😂😂

I don't know what it was that made this time so special. I can't tell if it was because of who I was and where I was on my life's journey, or if the UK was in fact at a peak. People seemed happier. So much seemed to be iconic, even before we had gotten far enough away from it to justifiably name it so. Born Slippy is a good example. It just somehow summed up that time - but it was immediate, you know? First time you heard it, you knew. And there's so little to it as a track. I don't know. I know this looks like the ramblings of a knobber, but I actually am trying to say something. I had some really happy times in the 90s (without drugs, believe it or not!) and I miss many aspects of life then. My life and the life around me. So much about my situation now is comparably better than it was then, yet I'm still filled with an aching nostalgia when I remember what it felt like. Maybe I'm depressed. Maybe life WAS better then, in general. Maybe this is just what happens as we get older - we fixate on a certain point in time and idealise it. I don't know.
